The Gnome House with the water wheel
Leaving the wooden stairs from the writing gnome's mushroom behind you, you arrive at a small square by a stream. The water powers a waterwheel on the side of the next little house. A small stone staircase leads you to the front of the house, which, remarkably enough, is less mushroomy in character than the other structures in the village. It is a construction designed primarily as an ordinary house, with a tiled roof and a gable. Only on the right is the link to the rest of the mycological village visible: here, the house consists of a brown, elongated morel mushroom cap. In front of the house, you will find a small bridge and a gate with a handle. It is the second interactive element in the Gnome Village: if you try to open the gate, a little gnome comes to take a look, although he does not seem to be able to see the visitors. The door gnome says:
Toot-toot-toot...
Hey, no, no, there is no one there for me. And not there either!
Well, I must have been mistaken.
We also encounter this interaction with a stool at a fence later in the forest in Hansel and Gretel, although that fairy tale was added to the forest much earlier.
To the right of the little door, in front of the cottage, we see a little gnome woman. She is the only woman in the entire village and is busy doing the laundry, reinforcing gender stereotypes. She stands under a small straw shelter on a wooden platform above the stream, scrubbing her laundry on a washboard. There is usually a thick layer of foam in the tub. A small clothesline hangs above the little gnome woman.
This gnome house was added in the year 1979.

The completely renovated part of the Gnome Village in 2023 during the frost of January 2024. Frozen water in the pond for this walk-thru attraction for the smallest visitors.

Beautiful light on the two gnomes in front of one of the gnome houses in the Gnome Village in the Fairytale Forest in the Efteling.

Two of the in total 13 gnomes living in this part of the Fairytale Forest. The gnome in the boat is fishing and almost falls asleep. Children can shout at him and as a reaction he wakes up, looks up and his fishing rod moves. The gnome in the background is busy preparing his pipe. The wreath on the door is part of Winter Efteling decoration.
This house was built in 1980 and was designed by Anton Pieck but carried out by Ton van de Ven.

Doornroosje (Sleeping Beauty) about one week after the renovation was completed. More light by removing trees that were far too large. New landscaping as well and the formerly not visible side of the castle is now visible due to the construction of second path around the castle. This was the way down from the castle towards Kabouterdorp (Gnome Village) which used to be located fully in the shade.

Doornroosje is the first fairytale in the route of the fairytale forest is also one of the oldest fairy tales in the history of De Efteling.
It is also one of the first ten fairytales at the opening in 1952, designed by Anton Pieck, although the current scene dates from 1981 and has some adjustments from Ton van de Ven. It is depicted with a castle on a hill, where visitors can climb up a staircase to look through windows through the bedroom where Doornroosje rests and the angry fairy sits on the spinning wheel. The chefs sleep in the kitchen.

The big gnome house with the resting gnomes. This character at the left is the sleeping gnome and named Siem de Slaper, Siem the Sleeper. The light is not that bright anymore than it ever was.

One of the 10 first fairytales of the Sprookjesbos (Fairytale forest) needed some loving tender care.
This was desperately needed: cracks have appeared in the old castle walls in recent years. There are also problems with the paving and the pond.
Sleeping Beauty has been sleeping in her castle since 1952 - the opening year of the Fairytale Forest. When it became apparent in the early 1980s that the original castle was subsiding, it was decided to demolish the scene and rebuild it. The current structure dates from 1981. Now, 42 years later, the ravages of time have taken hold again.
For example, there is a leak in the pond, which means that the surrounding trees have received too much water for years and have grown enormously," says Elings. "The roots and trunk press on the castle walls and cause cracks. During the planned maintenance, the cracks in the walls and the pond are repaired as we speak.

The oldest part of the Gnome Village from 1952 was not included in the major refurbishment of 2018. The three separate mushrooms have been inaccessible to visitors since the end of 2017. In 2023, work will be resumed to restore these three mushrooms to their former glory. Completely rebuilt, they will be accessible around 21/09/2023. Here they are busy with a special coating of the water pond.

After Doornroosje on the right-hand side, the actual Gnome Village begins. A short side path of the main route has been created here for children, with three mushrooms with low passages for them to walk through. There is also a small picnic table here, there are some gnome clothes hanging on a clothesline and there is a bridge over a pond. Gnomes cannot be seen here yet.

Ofcourse - a woman gnome doing.. the laundry. It's a nice addition to the original design without this scene. Mayde some playing child gnomes would have been a better idea. All the gnomes look old and grey, it's unclear why. And doing the laundry, they could have done better.
