Bare trees in a row along the Dutch Merwedekanaal near the village of Hoogblokland, municipality of Molenlanden, Alblasserwaard region, province of South Holland. The silhouettes contrast against the cloudy sky. The canal forms the border between the provinces of South Holland and (on the other side) Utrecht. It's winter in the Netherlands.

Het is een kaal rotseilandje, dat als broedplaats fungeert van de Amerikaanse dwergstern, de karetschildpad en de soepschildpad.
Op de oostelijke kust ligt het roestige wrak van een schip, de olietanker Maria Bianca Guidesman die er in 1982 strandde. Ook zijn er in de loop van de tijd andere schepen gestrand.

The island has an area of 1.7 square kilometers and is located about ten kilometers southeast of Curaçao.
It is a bare rocky island that serves as a breeding ground for the American little tern, the hawksbill turtle and the green turtle.
On the eastern coast lies the rusty wreck of a ship, the oil tanker Maria Bianca Guidesman, which ran aground there in 1982. Other ships have also foundered over time.
The island has no permanent residents.

De goudenregen (Laburnum anagyroides)
De vruchten van de goudenregen zijn slanke peulen van 4-8 cm lang. Vaak zijn ze gedraaid. In de peulen zitten zeer giftige zwarte zaden. De trossen vruchten zijn eerst harig, maar worden later donkerbruin en kaal.
De gouden regen is door de giftige peulen wellicht minder geschikt voor een tuin waar kinderen of honden spelen.

The golden rain (Laburnum anagyroides)
The fruits of the golden rain are slender pods 4-8 cm long. They are often rotated. The pods contain very poisonous black seeds. The bunches of fruits are hairy at first, but later turn dark brown and bare.
Due to the poisonous pods, the golden rain may be less suitable for a garden where children or dogs play.

The female monsks given the name Thilashin in Myanmar are not regarded as full female equivalents of the monks: they are not Bhikkunis. Thilashin, which literally means owner of good moral conduct remain the only monastic options for women at this time. These nuns take a vow to keep the ten precepts, shave their heads, and wear their distinctive earthen-red or pink robes on entering the nunnery. They devote themselves to religious functions around the clock with the intention of lessening the responsibilities of the ordinary world. The full bhikkhuni -nuns lineage of Theravada Buddhism died out and for various technical and social reasons was therefore permanently absent. The governing council of Buddhism in Myanmar has ruled that there can be no valid ordination of women in modern times, though some Burmese monks disagree. Although ranked lower than the monks, they are not subservient to them. They would also go out on alms round on certain days and receive uncooked rice or money. In religious community, Burmese nuns play useful roles as ritual specialists, educators and propagators of Buddhism. As ritual specialists, the nuns officiate at religious ceremonies. They have detailed knowledge of every ceremonial procedure so that they compliment the monk in Buddhist ceremonies. Those who choose to become nuns typically stay nuns for the rest of their lives.
Meditation is for the Thilashins the road to enlightenment. Their lifestyle is shaped so as to support their spiritual practice, to live a simple and meditative life. Photo taken from our hotel Rama in Mandalay - Myanmar. Thilashins out on alms to receive uncooked rice or money.
De vrouwelijke monnik kreeg de naam Thilashin en wordt niet beschouwd als volwaardige equivalent van de mannelijk monnik: ze zijn dus geen Bhikkunis. Thilashin betekent letterlijk eigenaar van goed zedelijk gedrag. In Myanmar - Birma is dit de enige monastieke mogelijkheid voor een vrouw. Een non moet zich aan de tien geboden houden. Ze scheren hun hoofd kaal, en dragen hun onderscheidende aarde-rood of roze gewaden. The bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is a proud medium-sized African eagle. The bateleur ranges over most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert where there is no thick forest. A small isolated population lives in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula.
This highly adapted hunter is an eagle of the plains. It prefers open habitat such as acacia savannas and grasslands where it can easily be seen soaring at unusually low heights in search of prey.
The bateleur is both a hunter and a scavenger. It preys on small mammals, birds and reptiles, and can fly for as much as eight hours at a time searching for live food or carrion. Bateleurs have also been observed feeding on insects as termites and the occasional fish.
Thie proud eagle is spectacularly beautiful, with glossy black feathers, a bare red face and legs, and a black beak. The upper wings are tawny, while the feathering under the wings is black and white.
The average adult is 58 to 75 cm long with a 180 cm wingspan.
The bateleur is considered to have a lifespan about 27 years.
"Bateleur" is French for "Street Performer". This name was probably chosen because of its distinctive aerial acrobatics.

Het leefgebied strekt zich uit over het grootste deel van Afrika zuidelijk van de Sahara, maar waar geen regenwouden zijn.
In het zuidwesten van het Arabische schiereiland leeft een kleine geïsoleerde populatie.
Deze zeer aangepaste jager is een roofvogel van de vlaktes met een voorkeur voor open gebieden als savannes en graslanden waar de vogel ook vaak kan worden waargenomen terwijl hij op ongewoon lage hoogten zweeft op zoek naar prooien.
De bateleur is zowel een jager als een aaseter. Hij jaagt op kleine zoogdieren, vogels en reptielen, en kan wel acht uur vliegen op zoek naar levend voedsel of aas. Er zijn ook bateleurs gezien die zich voeden met insecten als termieten en af en toe een vis.
De vogel is opvallend mooi met glanzend zwarte veren, een kaal rood gezicht en poten, en een zwarte snavelpunt. De bovenvleugels zijn geelbruin, terwijl de veren onder de vleugels zwart en wit zijn. De volwassen vogels zijn 58 à 75 cm lang, weegt 2 à 3 kg en bereikt een vleugelspanwijdte van 170 à 180 cm.
De bateleur kan een leeftijd van ongeveer 27 jaar bereiken.
"Bateleur" is Frans voor "straatartiest". Deze naam is waarschijnlijk gekozen vanwege zijn kenmerkende luchtacrobatiek.

It's early in the morning and the sun is just rising. The morning mist hangs over the fields in the Dutch polder. The orange colored light of the sun gives a mystical effect to the landscape.
The photo was taken at the beginning of the spring season in the Terheijdense Binnenpolder, a nature reserve near the Dutch village of Terheijden, municipality of Drimmelen, province of North Brabant.
Het is december en Sinterklaas is in het land. Een met kindertjes en Pieten gevulde stoomtram is onderweg van Hoorn naar
Wognum. Het donkere landschap met bomen die treuren over de teloorgang van de zomer, roept gedachten op aan de avonturen van de heer Olivier B. Bommel. Binnen in de rijtuigen zoeft de stoomverwarming en is het weldadig warm. Cadeautjes en dampende chocolademelk wachten op de jeugdige passagiers. In plaats van naar Waaigat in het Land van de Zwarte Bergen zal de tram met passagiers na afloop behouden terugkeren naar Hoorn.
The black-veined white (Aporia crataegi) is a medium-large butterfly of the family Pieridae, 'the whites and yellows'. The butterfly is found in orchards and bushes throughout most of Europe, North Africa, North America, Middle East and temperate Asia, Korea and Japan. It is normally found an altitudes of 500 to 2,000 metres.
In Western Europe and in Scandinavia, the black-veined white is mostly a vagrant. It is not present in the British Isles.
The black-veined white has a wingspan of 51 to 70 mm. The upper side of both fore and hind wings is a translucent white boldly veined with black. The underside is similar in the male but the female has brown veining. This butterfly can be told from other members of the white butterfly genus Pieris by its distinctive veined wings.
Het groot geaderd witje (Aporia crataegi) is een middelgrote dagvlinder uit de familie Pieridae, de witjes en geeltjes. De witte vlinder heeft een vleugelspanwijdte van 51 tot 70 mm. De smalle zwarte vleugeladers zijn zowel op de boven- als op de onderkant duidelijk te zien. Op de vleugels bevinden zich geen zwarte vlekken. Bij het mannetje is de voorvleugel bedekt met witte schubben, terwijl bij het vrouwtje de voorvleugel vrijwel kaal en doorzichtig is.
Het groot geaderd witje komt in bijna heel Europa voor, maar ook in Noord-Amerika, noord Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en gematigd Azië tot in Korea en Japan. De vliegtijd is van april tot en met juli.
In Nederland en België is het groot geaderd witje een dwaalgast. De vlinder is sinds 1975 door (nog) onbekende oorzaak vrijwel verdwenen uit Nederland. Eigenlijk alleen in oostelijk Nederland worden incidenteel zwervers uit Duitsland aangetroffen. De soort staat op de Nederlandse Rode Lijst zelfs als verdwenen.
Het groot geaderd witje lijkt wel op het klein geaderd witje, maar is een stuk groter. Ook zijn de zwarte aders duidelijker afgezet tegen de witte achtergrond. De aders van het klein geaderd witje zijn grijsgroen en waziger.
Deze opname is gemaakt in de vlindervolière voor Europese vlindersoorten van www.passiflorahoeve.nl bij Harskamp op de Veluwe. West Europese vlinders worden daar gekweekt, en hebben hun eigen voedsel- en nectarplanten om zich heen.

It is spring in the Netherlands. The trees along the Oudelandsedijk in the South Holland village of Nieuwe-Tonge (Goeree-Overflakkee) are still bare. But rapeseed is already in full bloom on the embankment of the dike. More in the background, bulb fields with blooming tulips are visible.
Het is lente in Nederland. De bomen langs de Oudelandsedijk in het Zuid-Hollandse dorp Nieuwe-Tonge (Goeree-Overflakkee) zijn nog kaal. Maar op het talud van de dijk bloeit het koolzaad al volop. Op de achtergrond zijn bollenvelden met bloeiende tulpen zichtbaar.

Geertruidskerk on the Markt in the Brabant town of Geertruidenberg. The church, which was called St. Gertrudiskerk before the Reformation, was built and rebuilt from around 1300. After that, the church was restored several times. The church belongs to the Protestant Congregation Geertruidenberg, but the tower is owned by the civil congregation. The still bare Dutch lime trees on either side of the Market date from the second half of the 18th century. Geertruidenberg celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2013; it is the second oldest city in the Netherlands.

Daarna is de kerk nog verschillende malen gerestaureerd. De kerk is van de Protestantse Gemeente Geertruidenberg, maar de toren is eigendom van de burgerlijke gemeente. De nu nog kale Hollandse lindes aan weerszijden van de Markt stammen uit de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw. Geertruidenberg vierde in het jaar 2013 zijn 800-jarig bestaan; het is de op één na oudste stad van Nederland.

The musk thistle, too nodding thistle and nodding plumeless thistle (Carduus nutans) is a biennial herb in the family Asteraceae. It is originally native to regions of Europe and Asia. Mature plants range in height from 0,5 - 2 metres tall and have multi-branched stems. Musk thistle has sharply spiny stems and leaves. The stem is cottony/hairy.
The plant bears showy red-purple flowers. The large globose flower heads, containing hundreds of tiny individual flowers, are 2 - 8 cm diameter and occur at the tips of stems.
The flower heads commonly droop to a 90° to 120° angle from the stem when mature, hence its alternate name of 'Nodding thistle'.
The plant is an invasive species in various regions around the world.
De knikkende distel (Carduus nutans) is een plant uit de composietenfamilie (Asteraceae). De Nederlandse naam wordt ontleend aan dat de bloemhoofdjes knikken.
In Nederland komt de soort in het hele land vrij algemeen voor, vooral in de kuststreek van Noord-Holland en Zuid-Holland, en is de plant vrij zeldzaam in Zeeland en Zuid-Limburg.
De bloeitijd is van juni tot en met september.
De plant kan 0,5 à -2 m hoog worden en de stekelige stengels zijn ongevleugeld. De bladeren zijn aan de bovenkant kaal en glanzend en aan de onderzijde behaard.
De knikkende distel bloeit in Nederland van juni tot en met augustus met 2 à 8 cm brede, roodpaarse, knikkende bloemhoofdjes. Vandaar ook de naam 'knikkende distel'.
Een bloemhoofdje bestaat uit meer dan honderd zoet geurende bloempjes. De nectar stijgt in de 1 cm lange kroonbuis op.
Vooral hommels met een lange tong en vlinders bezoeken de bloemen. Zweefvliegen gebruiken het stuifmeel als voedsel.
