A vowel is a syllabic speech sound pronounced without any stricture in the vocal tract. Vowels are one of the two principal classes of speech sounds, the other being the consonant. Vowels vary in quality, in loudness and also in quantity (length). They are usually voiced and are closely involved in prosodic variation such as tone, intonation and stress.

The word vowel comes from the Latin word vocalis, meaning "vocal". In English, the word vowel is commonly used to refer both to vowel sounds and to the written symbols that represent them (a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y).

Eunoia is the shortest English word containing all five main vowel graphemes.

In rhetoric, eunoia, in ancient Greek 'well mind; beautiful thinking' is the goodwill a speaker cultivates between themselves and their audience, a condition of receptivity. In Book VIII of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle uses the term to refer to the kind and benevolent feelings of goodwill a spouse has which form the basis for the ethical foundation of human life. Cicero translates εὔνοιᾰ with the Latin word benevolentia.

It is also a rarely used medical term referring to a state of normal mental health.

Euouae, at six letters long, is the longest English word consisting only of vowels, and, also, the word with the most consecutive vowels. Euouae : medieval musical term which indicates the vowels of the syllables of "seculorum Amen," which ends the "Gloria Patri."

Owls are birds from the order Strigiformes which includes over 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large, broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight. Exceptions include the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl.

Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds, although a few species specialize in hunting fish. They are found in all regions of the Earth except the polar ice caps and some remote islands.

Owls are divided into two families: the true (or typical) owl family, Strigidae, and the barn-owl family, Tytonidae.

HOUSE OF PINKU

Fall 2010

Public access is allowed only up to the prayer hall where people ring the bell, pray, and donate money. Only priests are allowed to enter the space beyond the prayer hall, which is considered as the private space for god(s).

Original Meiji Jinguu was burned down by the air raids of the allied forces in April and May, 1945 except for the South Gate. Current structures are the reconstruction completed in 1958.

As I explained in a previous photo, there were two types of people who supported the Meiji Restoration: those who wanted to promote the modernisation of Japan based on the Western models, and those who embraced Shintou-based nativism.

The latter type was responsible for the Haibutsu Kishaku movement (廃仏毀釈 abolish Buddhism destroy Shakyamuni), in which Shintoism was glorified and Buddhism was deprived of the privileges they enjoyed under the Tokugawa rule.

They also influenced the government to approve Shintoism as the state religion, to finance and control Shintoism, and to emphasise the Emperor as a divine being. It is called State Shinto or Kokka Shintou (国家神道). Construction of Meiji Jinguu as a national project was a typical example of State Shinto.

Another babushka key ring in my 'keep your keys cosy inside' design

Hey, partner. I hope you like this hexagon mug rug. I really enjoyed making it for you. I was afraid all the colors wouldn't go together, but I think I like them together.

Measures 58" x 80". I fussy cut the centres for the stars and made them up in random sizes. ( it was fun trying to join them all together! ) The solid fabric is a cotton/ linen in an olive colour. Vintage sheet on the back and a kokka stripe binding.

pattern by Amy Butler; flower print by Kokka.

Okay partner, what do you think?

When I started this mug rug I thought that I knew exactly what my plan was. I made a ton of hexies with the FFA2 but it just wasn't turning out as I had envisioned.

I started again and voila! I love it, and will be soon be making one for myself. I've never used this fabric before and I have really enjoyed working with it. This is also the first time that I've used a selvedge in my work - I wish I had more !

Thanks partner for getting me to try something new :)

Up 'til about two weeks ago, Dylan and I used to ride the train into the city together (he's since changed jobs). There's this guy on the train that carries a Fred Perry bowling-ish style bag (if it's not this one, it's very much like it). Dylan often sees things in magazines or films and then wants to incorporate them into his life, so I wasn't surprised that he requested a bowling or doctor's bag from me a few days later:)

We had seen this Ruby Star Spring print at the workroom ages ago, but we actually bought the yard at a huge discount from Paper Thread. I spent a lot of time staring at handbags when I was out and about (something I normally have pretty much no interest in) and looking for patterns online. Eventually, I just grabbed an image of the print online and drew a curved, trapezoidal shape on the computer at the real-life size that I wanted.

After that, because I wasn't working off a pattern, I made mistakes every step of the way! A lot of it had to do with my never having sewn with leather before. (It was Dylan's idea to use leather in the bag, and I think it's a really great stylistic choice.) But once I bought a teflon foot, things were okay. Sewing the faux-leather piping was also a pain, even though there's nothing complicated about it. In fact, I really laughed when I read Sara's review of the Amy Butler Weekender bag, which I imagine is constructed very similarly to this bag; she's absolutely right in recommending that you take your time in sewing the bag and take lots of breaks in between the steps to save yourself a lot of frustration. I probably spent a month sewing this bag! And Dylan doesn't even have anything to carry around in it!

and I still have a few hours to go.

I'm sad these won't be in the shop, because I was all excited to call them moutarde avec dots. This colour is almost dead on French's Mustard.

Chrysanthemum 'Kokka Bunmi'

I ordered a bundle of linen fat quarters.

The colors are fantastic.

This is my entry for Ellison Lane Quilt Modern Mini Challenge. It is a Mug Rug measuring about 7 1/2" x 9". I used a tutorial to try out machine binding, so I learned a new trick on this project.

My latest mug rug is for the tea lover...funky retro teapots, teacups, and even a Pyrex bowl. The fussy cuts are from Melody Miller's linen blend for Kokka, on a gray background. I'm loving the turquoise and golden yellow together, too.

Okay partner, what do you think?
