Last week I spent three days hiking in the upper area of Varaita’s Valley. It’s an amazing wild place: no internet connection, no big ski resorts, just a few mountain huts and only one paved road that links Italy to France at 2700 meters.
I was alone and I always slept in my tent. It’s the perfect situation for resting your mind and think properly. The more I do these experiences the more I love them.
I saw beautiful sunrises, sunsets, starry skies and beyond this, the lasts lights of Neowise comet.
Here you can see the last two italian villages before the border: Chianale and Pontechianale, with its artificial lake. Overlooking them the most important mountain of the area, Monviso, with a beautiful lenticular cloud crowning him.
I was at almost 3000 meters and, after an almost sleepless night spent shooting photos, it was such a pleasure to see this nature show. The wind blowing from the rock abyss in front of me was really impressive and scaring at times.

A King Tide is an exceptionally high tide that occurs several times a year, on a predictable schedule. Magic happens when a king tide is combined with stormy skies, high winds, and light breaking through the clouds. While the raw power of the sea is indescribable, its beauty is undeniable.

Nests in relatively barren tundra of the high Arctic, usually near water, either the coast or interior lakes. Spends several months at molt-migration stopover sites, in fjords or in the open ocean. Winters at the southern edge of sea ice, in Hudson Bay, and in small numbers in farther south.

King Vulture [Sarcoramphus papa]
I’ve photographed this species before in the Amazon, but at distance, so was pleased that on our recent trip to Costa Rica we had a couple of short sessions in the well-known Laguna del Lagarto vulture hide. This partially-sunken hide that's set in a small clearing was designed and constructed by the acclaimed Hungarian wildlife photographer Bence Máté. It’s now regarded as being one of the best places in the Americas to photograph the King Vulture (the largest New World vulture species - excluding the Andean and California Condor). The hide also attracts large numbers of Black Vultures, but strangely no Lesser Yellow-headed or Turkey Vultures. There are usually between two to six King Vultures there at a time, but the challenge is to try to get a clear shot of one (or two, if you can) through all the Black Vultures which, of course, is not easy when you’re in a fixed ground-level photographing position. The other issue is that the hide is in the rainforest – it’s hot and humid! The hide had a special one-way glass screen to ensure that the vultures were not spooked by any movement. We struck lucky on our visit as, literally the week before, the glass had been removed as an experiment. Not only were the vultures unaffected, but we had fresh air to cool the hide (or as fresh as it could be given that we were surrounded by vultures and that there was a hidden carcass in front of us!) and didn’t have to cope with shooting through glass.

Orange King Bougainvillea has showy masses of bronze-orange flowers.
Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants native to South America. The first European to describe these plants was Philibert Commerçon, a French botanist accompanying French Navy admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his voyage of circumnavigation, and first published in 1789.

King crab tempura with a couple of mushrooms and some bok choy tempura at the far end. Speaks for itself really :-)
Tempura is a classic Japanese dish of deep fried battered vegetables or seafood. A light batter is made of cold water and wheat flour and depending on the recipe, eggs, baking soda or baking powder, starch, oil, and/or spices are also added.
Tempura batter is traditionally mixed in small batches with chopsticks for only a few seconds, leaving lumps in the mixture that along with the cold batter temperature result in the unique fluffy and crisp tempura structure when cooked. Thin slices or strips of vegetables or seafood are dipped in flour, then the batter, then briefly deep fried at high temperature.
Tempura was introduced to Japan in the mid-sixteenth century by early Portuguese visitors. The word tempura may be derived from the Portuguese word temprar, meaning to heat or harden in oil,{{fact} or from the word tempero, meaning a condiment or seasoning. There is still a dish in Portugal very similar to tempura.
My favorite King Penguin shot of the trip.
Notice how emaciated this bird is. The keel of the breastbone stands out, flanked by sunken sides. It is likely on its way back to the sea to feed, after either molting or a shift incubating an egg.
