“The opportunity to love a dog and to treat it with kindness is an opportunity for a lost and selfish heart to be redeemed. They are powerless and innocent, and it is how we treat the humblest among us that surely determines the fate of our souls”

I don't make it a habit of picking up wild animals, but this little guy was found beside my safety boot, which is a very dangerous place considering I'm wearing a US adults size 13.

Flickr is such a kind and caring community that supports it's members. I think the biggest thing we could do to achieve world peace is to all treat everyone we cross paths with with kindness and respect, especially vulnerable children. And set that example for our children too. We may not be able to change the ideas of fundamentalists but we can make sure the people we come into contact with go away feeling a little better about their lives. Let's be that bright spot for others.
Kindness in words creates confidence.
Kindness in thinking creates profoundness.
Kindness in giving creates love.

from poet naomi shihab nye:
"Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrow
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend."
So there’s this campaign in Brantford to spread kindness by painting rocks and hiding them around the city. When you find one you’re supposed to post it on Facebook and then re-hide the rock. My neighbour’s kids found one by my yard today while walking their dog and it says HOPE! I asked if I could take a pic of the rock to share with my sister, as she lost a granddaughter at birth named Hope. When the kids came by a second time they said they wanted me to have the rock! So I guess now I’ll have to hide it somewhere!

Kestrel
In medieval falconry the kestrel was reserved for the knave, reflecting its lowly status.
Country kestrels feed almost exclusively on small rodents (particularly voles), but those living in towns will take sparrows instead.
Though rodents may be the principal diet, they will also take a wide variety of other prey, including lizards, earthworms, large insects and even bats.
Vole numbers affect kestrel numbers: in good vole years more young kestrels are fledged.
Kestrels have remarkably keen eyesight even in extremely poor light, allowing them to hunt almost until dark.
Kestrels hunt from static perches and by hovering: the latter is far more productive, but uses lots of energy, which is why they hunt mainly from perches during the winter.
Hovering gives the kestrel its country name of windhover.
Kestrels aren’t as big as they look. An adult weighs on average a mere 220gm, less than half the weight of a red-legged partridge.
Our kestrel is one of a large group of similar species, found throughout much of the world, but it has the largest range, breeding through much of Europe, Africa and Asia.
Kestrels are Britain’s most widely distributed bird of prey, breeding throughout the mainland and on many offshore islands.
Kestrels rarely breed on Shetland: the most recent record was in 1905.
Their absence from Shetland may be explained by the absence of voles there.
Until recently kestrels were also our most numerous bird of prey, but the buzzard has taken over the No 1 slot.
Breeding kestrels like to use old crows’ nests, but they will also use holes in trees, nest boxes and cliff ledges.
Most kestrel nest failures occur during incubation; if eggs hatch, then it is most likely that some of the young will fledge.
Though not a colonial species, in years when there is an abundance of voles they will sometimes nest within a few metres of each other.
The lesser kestrel, which breeds in southern and eastern Europe, is a strictly colonial nester, often found in large colonies.
The world’s rarest species of kestrel lives on Mauritius, where it has come perilously close to extinction. There were just eight birds left in the wild 30 years ago, but the number is now close to 1,000.
Kestrels have been seen to rob sparrowhawks and both barn and short-eared owls of their prey.
The major cause of death among young kestrels is starvation: only 30-40% survive their first year.
The film Kes, about a young working-class boy training a kestrel, was made in 1969 but is still regarded as a classic. Living With Birds Notes.
Mettā (Pali) or maitrī (Sanskrit) means benevolence, loving-kindness, friendliness, amity, good will, and active interest in others. It is the first of the four sublime states (Brahmavihāras) and one of the ten pāramīs of the Theravāda school of Buddhism.

This kind individual was doing the best she could (pacing back and forth) sharing a bag of nutritious seed with a sorde of Mallard. Respect.
Alternatively, out of shot was a family who were throwing copious amounts of bread to the ducks. The children were throwing large pieces too, which could choke the wee birds..
In this day and age you would think that people would know that there is little nutritional value in feeding bread to ducks and it can create harmful bacteria in the water also.

One of the things I enjoy the most about photography is that when I stop at someone's yard full of flowers I often find the kindest people who love sharing their flowers with me. I often get their email addresses and send them some of the pictures I took so they can use them for computer wallpapers. I just uploaded 19 pix (in my Smugmug account) that I took today in this sweet woman's beautiful yard today!

'Royal landing'. Early morning shot of a Mute Swan gliding in to land on choppy water, RSPB Blacktoft Sands, East Yorkshire.
Many thanks for visiting my Flickr pages ...Your visits, interest, comments and kindness to 'fave' my photos is very much appreciated, Steve.
For centuries, mute swans were known as 'birds royal' because only the king or a few specially favoured subjects could keep them. They were often served up, roasted, at banquets - a roast swan must have required a very large plate!
Habitat: large freshwater areas, such as rivers, lakes and canals. Also estuaries, especially in winter.
Description: adults all white; young are grey to begin with, and develop brown feathers which they keep until their second year. Reddish-orange bill, with a black knob of skin at the base.
Size: length:- 1.5m. Wingspan:- 2.25m. Weight:- male, 10kg, female, 8kg.
Life-span: most swans do not live more than 7 years in the wild. They can live up to 50 years.
Food: underwater plants, grasses and cereal crops.
The graceful mute swan is Britain's largest bird and one of the heaviest flying birds in the world. There are six other species of swan in the world, but the mute is the only resident one you will see in Britain i.e. it stays in Britain all the year round. During the winter months you may also see the whooper swan and Bewick's swan. Whooper swans visit the north and west of Britain in large numbers, arriving in the late autumn and remaining until the spring, when they fly on up to their breeding grounds in the Arctic. Bewick's swans come in from Siberia and occupy the eastern and southern parts of England. In some areas, both these visiting swans can be seen together. Large numbers gather together in three main groups; on the Derwent Floods in Yorkshire, the Ouse Washes of East Anglia and at Slimbridge in Gloucestershire.
The mute swan is easy to distinguish from the whooper and Bewick's swans, but when the last two are seen together at a distance, it can be difficult to spot the difference between them. However, the whooper is larger than the Bewick's and has more yellow on the bill.

Kindness is timeless
Love is so easy to give
It just takes a moment
To show somebody that you care x2
In the world that we live in
Everybody wants to be so cruel
To be in the in-crowd
Got the hottest clothes, the hottest shoes
We're reading the tabloids
And we're flossing in the club
But the freshest thing you can do is
Give someone your love
Kindness is timeless
Love is so easy to give
It just takes a moment
To show somebody you care
Kindness is timeless
Love is so easy to give
It just takes a moment to...
Give someone your love
To give someone your lalala love
To give someone your love
Give someone your love
Your lalalala love
Give someone your lalala love
The clothes that your wearing
It will one day be out of style
The car that your driving
One day will vax out in miles
Your hair and your makeup
And the time that it takes up
It will take the same care of
Ya give someone ya love
Kindness is timeless
Love is so easy to give
It just takes a moment
To show somebody you care
Kindness is timeless
Love is so easy to give
It just takes a moment to...
To give someone your love
To give someone your lalala love
To give someone your love
Give someone your love
Your lalalala love
Give someone your lalala love
Give someone you love
Cause kindness is timeless
