The Skull Rock formation in the Jumbo Rocks area hosts in the Mojave desert in Joshua Tree National park.
So, we found this on the desert. Feels like rubber, but is it part of a Joshua Tree, or at least we think so. Any biologists out there?
One of the "trails" we tried follow had this 10ft overhang in a deepish canyon. I carried our packs up and around it, scrambling on loose gravel on the sides on the way up, but then when we later came down (because it lead us about 4/10 of a grid coordinate off of where the "trail" was on the map) I didn't feel like carrying our packs. So we pulled out the rope, and improvised a simple pulley. The rope is secured on one end, loops around the pack, then goes around a sharp rock on the other side. The friction between the rope and the rock did most of the work, and we were able to lower our packs with relative ease.
Americana at its worst: (1) mediocre but expensive food. (2) mediocre band. (3) after spending 30 bucks for food, I was thrown out 10 minutes after I paid (this would never happen in Europe). (unfortunately I tipped, had I only known...) (4) the crowd was scary: all-white, cowboy and baseball hats, hair style from the 1970s and not because of fashion (bet some of them had guns too). (5) average weight close to 100 kg. (6) The place was Pioneertown, which is not a real town, but originally a set built for movies. (7) Implication: no votes for democrats here. (8) Implication 2: do NOT show that you're a foreigner.
Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca in the family Agavaceae. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree and Yucca palm and Tree yucca and Palm tree yucca. This monocotyledonous tree is native to southwestern North America in the states of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada, where it is confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400-1,800 m (2,000-6,000 feet). It thrives in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. There are two subspecies, including Yucca brevifolia ssp.jaegeriana Jaeger Joshua tree or Jaeger's Joshua tree or Pygmae Yucca. Other subspecies have been proposed but rejected by botanists, including one reduced to a form, Yucca brevifolia f. herbertii (Webber's Yucca or Herbert Joshua Tree).

A metal monument to a desert showdown on Joshua Tree's Wall Street Mill trail, as possibly the best short trail in the park.
Take a picturesque stroll between rocky outcroppings along the flat desert floor, passing historic ruins of mans' attempts to live in and off this arid landscape.
At Southern California's Joshua Tree National Park, something BIG happened--perhaps a lightning strike--to split this Joshua Tree into branches that fell symmetrically around the central trunk. © 2013 Dennis Mammana / dennismammana.com
