Evening light fall on the south facing view of Joseph Picinnini Recreation Centre. I did not take a picture of the outdoor pool but I can tell you that the water is in!
Joseph City, 13 miles east of Holbrook, is the oldest Mormon settlement in Arizona. It was named for Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. The community was established in March 1876 as Allen's Camp. It became St. Joseph in 1878 and was then renamed Joseph City in 1923 to avoid confusion with St. Joseph, Mo.
The unincorporated town of Joseph City has few remaining Route 66 commercial sites and gets little attention from roadtrippers. But it's worth rolling through on old 66 to see this pleasant community.

Germany – 18SEP2017 – Family & Friends
This was a special layover: I took the train to Babenhausen, where Mother and Gertrud met me at the train station. All too soon Mother and I had to say good-bye to Gertrud and Heinz.
Arriving back in Mainz at twilight, Mother and I took the bus to the crew hotel. My room offered a splendid view of the city, especially great, as Mother wanted "Flat Martin" in church (spire) photos from Germany to give her church for its big celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Reformation, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the castle church door.
While I worked the inbound flight, it was a real treat having my mother on board, returning her 10-day visit to the Blachniks!
Joe got her the photos; her church added them to its collage: so in this manner, 'Martin Luther' did get to go to Mainz, after 500 years – and 'he' traveled all the way to Brevard, NC, USA!

Joseph Wouters, sculpteur et ami hollandais vivant en France en Dordogne, m'a ouvert les portes de son atelier et pendant trois heures (en essayant de me faire oublier) j'ai pris quelques instantanés, pendant qu'il me montrait ses oeuvres et qu'il travaillait une pièce en bois.
Sculpteur sur pierres, sur bois et peintre, il est également l'auteur d'un livre de dessin intitulé "Structures". En effet chaque matin, il commence sa journée par un dessin...

My last work until 26 December.
On the South Island of New Zealand. One of the few glaciers that is actually growing! Or so the visitor center told me. Apparently global warming has changed the local weather patterns so that they get more cloud cover and more precipitation which helps the glacier expand.
Thanks to a historical marker, and then a wonderfully helpful secretary at Evart City Hall, I was able to find the final resting place of Joseph W. Guyton. It's not often I find "famous" graves, but I think this qualifies.

In these days when statues are toppling on a daily basis, Darlington should say a word in praise of Mr Pease who stands on a plinth in High Row.
In 2008, this statue, erected in 1875, was one of 21 across the country to have their listing schedules enhanced because of their importance to the anti-slavery movement.
Four friezes on Joseph Pease’s plinth tell his life story. On one of those friezes, a slave writes the word “freedom” above the heads of a rejoicing crowd.
The Peases were Quakers, who believed that all people were equal before God. Joseph’s uncle, also called Joseph, lived at Feethams where the Town Hall is today, and from the earliest years of the 19th Century, he led a national campaign against slavery in India.
He fired his daughter, Elizabeth, with enthusiasm for the cause of fairness, and she founded the Darlington Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in the mid-1830s – it was one of the first women’s political movements in the country.
In 1840, Elizabeth was one of six women to attend the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London where, to her horror, she discovered that because she was female she was not only forbidden from speaking but she had to sit behind a bar and a curtain. This unfairness fired her further and she became a feminist, arguing that women should be equal also.
In 1853, though, she married a Glasgow university professor of astronomy who was not a Quaker. “Marrying out” was still frowned upon and so broke ties with Darlington and lived the rest of her life in Edinburgh, campaigning for women to get the vote.
In 1832, Elizabeth persuaded her cousin Joseph to break with Quaker tradition and stand for Parliament so he could further the cause of anti-slavery. He won the South Durham seat, and became the first nonconformist MP in the Commons for 200 years.
Joseph joined fellow MP William Wilberforce in campaigning to free slaves.
In his longest speech, Joseph appealed to other MPs "on behalf of their poor brethren of colour whose sufferings under the present system were of a nature to stimulate every feeling bosom to concede to them a paramount consideration”.
The speech covers 40 pages in Hansard, the Parliamentary record, and as Joseph delivered it, he became increasingly wrapped up in the emotion of it, much to the delight of the Whig MPs opposite him.
Hansard records: "He felt the inadequacy of his powers in pleading such a cause. (Here, the hon gentleman was so affected he was obliged to pause for a moment. Much cheering.)
"The house will pardon me (concluded Mr Pease) for having so long trespassed upon their attention. I am unable to go on. But when the great and solemn day shall come, when I shall myself stand in need of mercy, I hope it will be meted to me in the same measure as I am disposed to mete it to others."
Despite the ridicule, Joseph's speech was widely regarded by anti-slavery campaigners as for providing moral justification for the cause, and the Abolition of Slavery Act received Royal Assent on August 28, 1833.
Unfortunately, Wilberforce never lived to see it – he died a month earlier, just as the Stockton & Darlington Railway was taking delivery of its engine No 23.

It was designed by Timothy Hackworth, but had been built by Robert Stephenson & Co in Newcastle. It was a major step forward for the railway: Locomotion No 1 of 1825 had been able to pull 250 tons of coal per mile per hour but locomotive No 23 was able to pull 1,250 tons of coal per mile per hour, and it was the first engine in the dark green paint that the S&DR then adopted for all of its locos.
No 23 was named Wilberforce in honour of the anti-slavery campaigner.
I met Joseph and his friend Canard, on the corner of Rush and Chicago Avenue. We walked and talked for about eight blocks. Joseph's been out here for about ten years. He served in the Marine Corps, around 1984. At the moment he'll either sleep in the shelter or on the street. "Anywhere it's warm", he said. We walked under an overpass on Illinois and he said, "a lot of us used to sleep under there". Then he shook his said saying, I've seen a lot of people die (due to the cold)."

Founded in 1925, the city grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s and is now the 12th-largest city in Florida. Hollywood is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people at the 2015 census.
Joseph Young arrived in South Florida in 1920 to create his own "Dream City in Florida". His vision included the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean stretching westward with man-made lakes, infrastructure, roads, and the Intracoastal Waterway. He wanted to include large parks, schools, churches, and golf courses; these were all industries and activities that were very important to Young's life. After Young spent millions of dollars on the construction of the city, he was elected as the first mayor in 1925.
This new town quickly became home to northerners known as "snowbirds", who fled the north during the winter and then escaped the south during the summer to avoid the harsh weather. By 1960, Hollywood had more than 2,400 hotel units and 12,170 single-family homes. Young bought up thousands of acres of land around 1920 and named his new town "Hollywood by the Sea" to distinguish it from his other real-estate venture, "Hollywood in the Hills", in New York.
During the early days of development here, 1,500 trucks and tractors were engaged in clearing land and grading streets; two yacht basins, designed by General George Washington Goethals, chief engineer in the construction of the Panama Canal, were dredged and connected with the Intracostal Waterway. A large power plant was installed, and when the city lights went on for the first time, ships at sea reported that Miami was on fire, and their radio alarms and the red glow in the sky brought people to the rescue from miles around.
Prospective purchasers of land were enticed by free hotel accommodation and entertainment, and "were driven about the city-to-be on trails blazed through palmetto thickets; so desolate and forlorn were some stretches that many women became hysterical, it is said, and a few fainted.
Young had a vision of having lakes, golf courses, a luxury beach hotel (Hollywood Beach Hotel, now Hollywood Beach Resort), country clubs, and the main street, Hollywood Boulevard.

Northeast Oregon's Joseph Canyon in it's winter dress.
"The canyon was named after Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, who is traditionally thought to have been born in a cave on the east bank of Joseph Creek in Asotin County. Prior to European settlement, the Nez Perce used the canyon bottomlands as a travel corridor from summer camp sites in the Wallowa Valley to winter camp sites along the Grande Ronde and Snake Rivers. Elk, bighorn sheep, and mule deer were plentiful, as well as native plant foods associated with bunchgrass habitat. In later centuries, the Nez Perce grazed horses on the canyon grasslands. Beginning in the late 19th century, pioneer settlers homesteaded in the area, grazing sheep and cattle and planting fruit orchards."

St. Joseph's Cathedral is a church on Church Street in the Hoan Kiem District of Hanoi, Vietnam. The late 19th-century Gothic Revival (Neo-Gothic style) church serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hanoi to nearly 4 million Catholics in the country.
Construction began in 1886, with the architectural style described as resembling Notre Dame de Paris. The church was one of the first structures built by the French colonial government in Indochina when it opened in December 1886. It is the oldest church in Hanoi.
Windows are fitted with tall stained glass and have pointed arches. The cathedral's stained glass windows were produced in France before being transported to Vietnam. The ceiling is rib vaulted like those seen in medieval Europe. The nave is weathered and the sanctuary looks shiny and is made of gilt trimmed wood, similar to that of Phat Diem Cathedral and has royal Hue architectural embellishments. A statue of Virgin Mary is kept in palanquin according to the local custom, which is seen to the left of the nave. It is at the end of the church street which is an upscale market area with boutiques and silks

"Brother Joseph" was sitting on the southwest corner of Ida B. Wells and State Street. He was friendly and was waving at everyone who passed by. He's been out here for two years. One of his biggest needs is a propane tank for his tent, which costs 28 dollars. "It's been out for two weeks", he said. He lives in "Tent City". a homeless encampment on Roosevelt and the Dan Ryan Expressway. "I used to work for the City of Chicago. When his unemployment ran out, that's when he became homeless. "God is what keeps me going", he said. "I'm here every day". Before I left he said, "when I get some money, I'll buy you breakfast on me". As I walked away, he continued to wave and greet everyone as they passed by.
My thank to Rob Hefler at the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings for identifying this flower as Amaranthus tricolor “Splendens” or Amaranthus Perfecta, also known as Joseph’s Coat. What a disappointment, though I still find it a gorgeous exotic. It was not a perennial or a native wildflower. The Cliff Dwellings have extensive gardens of native wildflowers and shrubs used by the indigenous people. Why they suddenly had a garden of non-native annuals, I can't imagine.
