Double-crested Cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus

This was pretty hard to dress her in! I had fun making this outfit though. It's something different and new. Hope you like it!

I'm trying new signatures out and seeing what kinds I like the best or look the best with the picture.

Comment on the commercialism of the holiday season. How much do we really need?

This tiny jeweled visitor crashed into my bedroom window today and landed headfirst into the cold deep snow. I scooped him out and tried to warm him in my hands. I put him on a patio chair not sure if he would live. I could see his little chest moving as he lay quietly on his side. However, a few minutes later he propped himself up and getting his bearings- or pondering the traumatic event for a few moments, off he flew on his journeys no worse for wear!! . It made my day!

not sure if he is Anna's or Ruby Throated species.

I helped along with that a little bit, as usual :) These flowers are tiny, so I would say reproduction ratio is around 2:1 or more.

For several weeks now, I'm posted just dragons and damsels. I do this for me but, because I am so enamored by them, I also think that you will find them of beauty and interest.

I don't think I'll tire of them, first because each image is a split second in time. Second, there is a special moment for me every time I find and photograph one, so special that I recall perhaps ninety percent of the circumstances around which found and "captured" them. And then what I realized today was that the light illumination each of them and surrounding each circumstance is truly unique.

Fifty Flame Skimmers are all different as images. The light that strikes their wings can make geometric jewels of them. The shades of red change at different times of day (and the age of the insect). And then, perhaps rarest of all, are specific perches. Even a blade of grass and the angle at which the dragonfly found it can be unique. And then, a broken reed or stick that has been in that pond at that time and after having been aged almost to a patina after year's is special. The image you see here has several wonderful characteristics, and one is that perch. I know where it is. I know that it's still there after 10 years, and that its become smooth, AND it is a favorite perch for any number of RED dragonflies, and red only. So add mystery to the mix.

I was in the park to photograph the nest of the red-tailed hawk or I could have easily spent a whole morning focusing on the rain-jeweled flowers and spiderwebs in the lovely light fog. But I had to take time to capture a few photos, and I'm very glad I did.

Sometimes at the end of a painting session I use the leftover paint on the pallet to work on abstract pieces. 5x5 oil on paper.

I believe this is an Argiope trifasciata, or Banded Garden Spider. Female, I think. I had been looking for dewdrops to photograph among the cattails and other brush when my friend Joy saw me and asked "Find any interesting orb weavers?" I immediately shifted gears, she and I both stumbled onto spiders of interest. This one was jeweled in dew drops. My spider book doesn't cover these and the internet doesn't offer a lot of detail. I'm going to need a better book! What I have found is that they are fairly common throughout the continental US, especially during late summer/early autumn. So check your weeds, you may have one or more of these beauties lurking about. Photographed during my amazing trainee weekend with the New York Master Naturalist program. Arnot Forest, NY. Northern Jeweled Spider (Gasteracantha fornicata). This was the final subject I photographed before leaving Tropical North Queensland. [Cairns Botanic Gardens, QLD, Australia]

I've previously taken several from above; this is shot from underneath the cobweb. I was very lucky to spot a cobweb this morning that allowed access for a lens underneath and had good light. The distortion in the refraction is caused by gravity trying to pull the droplet off the cobweb and changing its shape.

This picture is juvelnile mantis of Jeweled Flower Mantis or Indian Flower Mantis in Creobroter gemmatus Species.

better in Light Box 'L'

My misty morning walk on the York City Walls offered many splendid sights, including this spider web dripping with dewy jewels. Passers by must have wondered as I took picture after picture, trying to capture the sparkle of light on the jeweled webs. Even better in the large size.

I've been away for quite a while and sincerely appreciate your notes, emails, and thoughtful words of encouragement. It's been a long road, but I've made it through 6 sessions of chemo, 25 sessions of radiation (I should be glowing!) and don't have to see another doc for three months - yay!

I look forward to catching up with my dear flickr pals and I know seeing your amazing work will inspire me once again! ♥
