From a computer with some older versions of Firefox and Java:

Firefox 3.6.3 blocks the 1.5 version of the Java runtime library as a security and/or stability risk.

"Add-ons may be causing problems--Firefox has determined that the following add-ons are known to cause stability or security problems: Java 5.0 update 6"

As of Oct 25, 2011 the latest stable release of Firefox is 7.0.1

In its Oct 2011 “Patch Update Advisory” Oracle recommends –
