Seeing a kill is always difficult. There's that feeling of excitement because you know you are seeing something many, many people will never see; then there's the sadness because an animal has lost it's life to feed another and then there's the justification that if the Cheetah hadn't made that kill, it may have starved. So I post this photo hoping it will be seen as life as it is in the wild.

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called nin one body. And obe thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And swhatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The painting is engulfing as a result of being primitive, free from justification and the sense of guilt for not being intellectual. It comes from the unconscious creative the psychological drive which is not adapted to a language of nuances and does not require decoding.

Mirits spectator is bombarded with a colorful abundance, with repeating images and metaphors that are easily perceived and identified. For the person who is accustomed to the sophisticated art form, this is a fresh breath of immediate beauty.

Perhaps this is the place and the time to go deeper into the roots of a culture which for generations now has been obscured with theories and isms.

For me there's no justification no matter If it's a big company, in small company or a single author. Buying recast is stealing the work of the creative that designs it, the one who sculpts [the doll], the one who does the face-up ... Etc. It's a cheap excuse to think that this is not going to harm the persons involved in the process of creating a BJD while making recasts is only about copying the doll.

It's not stupid - in my opinion - to think that there may come the day when the X company quits because their sales are not enough or because they can't pay all of their employees and some of them will have to be fired.

The error in the thesis of "art for art's sake" really amounts to supposing that there are relativities which bear their adequate justification within themselves, in their own relative nature, and that consequently there are criteria of value inaccessible to pure intelligence and foreign to objective truth. This error involves abolishing the primacy of the spirit and its replacement either by instinct or taste, by criteria that are either purely subjective or else arbitrary.

We have already seen that the definition, laws and criteria of art cannot be derived from art itself, that is, from the competence of the artist as such; the foundations of art lie in the spirit, in metaphysical, theological and mystical knowledge, not in knowledge of the craft alone nor yet in genius, for this may be anything at all; in other words the intrinsic principles of art are essentially subordinate to extrinsic principles of a higher order.

Art is an activity, an exteriorisation, and thus depends by definition on a knowledge that transcends it and gives it order; apart from such knowledge art has no justification: it is knowledge which determines action, manifestation, form, and never the reverse.

It is not necessary to produce works of art oneself in order to have the right to judge an artistic production in

its essentials; decisive artistic competence only comes into play in relation to an intellectual competence which must be already present.

No relative point of view can claim unqualified competence except in the case of innocuous activities in which competence applies anyhow in a very narrow field; now human art derives from a relative point of view; it is an application, not a principle.

Another 8mm fisheye shot of the beautiful new basement access stair in Rhodes House, Oxford. Regular visitors to my photostream might not be surprised to hear this is a 'flipped' image.....

Like many Oxford University buildings, this isn't normally open to the public so the Oxford Preservation Trust organised 'Open Doors' weekend provides a much appreciated chance to explore such buildings.

More 'flipped' photos here : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157627889661743

From the RIBA Journal, "But that demanded a new access stair in Baker’s memorial hall, which required buy-in from local planners and Historic England. ‘Their initial reticence forced us to address their concerns with something as good as it could be, and though bold, it was absolutely the right solution,’ says Davies. Stanton Williams associate Tom Fotheringham adds that the firm’s handsome, self-supporting limestone stair, designed with engineer Webb Yates, has both a functional and architectonic purpose. ‘Part of the justification was that the alternatives were more harmful to the building and that it could enhance the quality of the volume by making it feel less transitory – giving it gravitas.’

But if gravitas at this lower level pre-supposes darkness or weight, visitors may be surprised, for the architect has used cleverly inserted roof glazing to bring unexpected lightness, beauty and utility to formerly unlit spaces."

Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)

17 The LORD your God is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save;

he will rejoice over you with gladness;

he will quiet you by his love;

he will exult over you with loud singing.

Isaiah 40:28–31 (ESV)

28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The LORD is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary;

his understanding is unsearchable.

29 He gives power to the faint,

and to him who has no might he increases strength.

30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,

and young men shall fall exhausted;

31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings like eagles;

they shall run and not be weary;

they shall walk and not faint.

Castle Drogo is a country house and mixed-revivalist castle near Drewsteignton, Devon, England. Constructed between 1911 and 1930, it was the last castle to be built in England. The client was Julius Drewe, the hugely successful founder of the Home and Colonial Stores. Drewe chose the site in the belief that it formed part of the lands of his supposed medieval ancestor, Drogo de Teigne. The architect he chose to realise his dream was Edwin Lutyens, then at the height of his career. Lutyens lamented Drewe's determination to have a castle but nevertheless produced one of his finest buildings. The architectural critic, Christopher Hussey, described the result: "The ultimate justification of Drogo is that it does not pretend to be a castle. It is a castle, as a castle is built, of granite, on a mountain, in the twentieth century".

The castle was given to the National Trust in 1974, the first building constructed in the twentieth century that the Trust acquired. The castle is a Grade I listed building. The gardens are Grade II* listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

In 1910 Julius Drewe bought about 450 acres (1.8 km2) south and west of the village of Drewsteignton in the belief that he was descended from the Drewe family that once lived here.[2] Born Drew, the son of George Smith Drew and his wife Mary, née Peek, both from substantial families of grocers, Drewe added the "e" to his surname later in life.[3] At the age of 18, Drewe was sent to China as a tea-buyer by his uncle, Francis Peek (c.1836–99), a partner in Liverpool tea-merchants Peek and Winch. Julius's great uncle, Richard Peek (1782–1867), one of the three brothers who founded Peek and Winch, was an abolitionist and philanthropist who was on the organising committee of the anti-slavery conventions held in London in 1840 and 1843. The Peek and Winch company later expanded into coffee, cocoa, rubber and spices, and owned plantations in the Dutch East Indies. In 1878, Drewe returned to Liverpool and opened the Willow Pattern Tea Store. In 1883, Drewe and John Musker (1846–1926) founded the Home and Colonial Trading Association (later Home and Colonial Stores), which sold teas selected in India by Drewe, alongside other groceries. By 1903, the company had 500 stores. By the time of his death in 1931 he had bought up an estate of 1,500 acres. Around 1910 he asked Edwin Lutyens to build him a castle.[4] According to his son Basil, he did so on the advice of Edward Hudson, proprietor of Country Life magazine, who was both a patron and a champion of Lutyens. Drewe was now 54 years old, but he still had time, energy and money to create his new family seat. The budget was £50,000 for the castle, and a further £10,000 for the garden.[5] Lutyens wrote privately of his concern over Drewe's ambitions; "I do wish he didn't want a castle but just a delicious loveable house with plenty of good large rooms in it".[6] On 4 April 1911, Drewe's 55th birthday, the first foundation stone was laid.[7]wikipedia

Owen Jones: One Thousand Israeli Soldiers Face War Crimes Complaint (Publ. 8 Oct. 2024)

Bucharest | 7 May 2025:

The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice in Romania has formally acknowledged the war crimes complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation against Israeli soldier Orel Benyaish, a member of the 432nd Battalion of the Givati Brigade. The complaint, submitted on behalf of the Foundation by attorney Elena Lazăr, has been referred to the Military Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Military Court of Appeal for further examination.

The legal action concerns Benyaish’s alleged involvement in the intentional destruction of civilian property during Israel’s military operations in Gaza, including the demolition of the homes in the Nuseirat camp on 12 November 2024. The complaint is based on documented open-source material, including videos and photographs posted by the accused on social media, which appear to show direct participation in and endorsement of the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

The submission is grounded in both Romanian domestic law—specifically Articles 438 and 441 of the Romanian Penal Code, which criminalize genocide and war crimes against property—and relevant international legal instruments, including the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and the Geneva Conventions, to which Romania is a party.

In a written communication, Romanian authorities confirmed that the materials submitted by the Hind Rajab Foundation were officially registered and forwarded to the competent military prosecution authority for further processing.

Legal Context and Next Steps

The complaint also includes references to broader patterns of destruction in Gaza, particularly the use of the Netzarim Corridor as part of a strategy that has resulted in widespread displacement and destruction of civilian areas. Reports by Forensic Architecture and various international observers are cited in support of these claims.

In light of the open-source evidence and Romania’s international obligations, the Foundation has called on Romanian authorities to consider preventive measures, including placing the suspect on a travel watchlist, initiating the confiscation of digital evidence, and opening a formal investigation.

The Hind Rajab Foundation welcomes the decision by Romanian authorities to treat this matter with the seriousness it warrants and to act in accordance with international legal standards.

“The referral to military prosecution is a serious development,” said HRF's Chairman Dyab Abou Jahjah (b. 1971). “It shows that Romania is taking its international legal obligations seriously and is willing to consider accountability for war crimes, even when committed outside its borders.”

- Hind Rajab Foundation: Romanian Authorities Refer HRF War Crimes Complaint Against Israeli Soldier to Military Prosecutor (Publ. 7 May 2025)

Bucharest, March 31, 2025:

Today, the Hind Rajab Foundation, through its legal representative, has filed a criminal complaint before the Romanian Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice against Orel Benyaish, an Israeli soldier from the 432nd Battalion of the Givati Brigade. He is accused of committing war crimes and acts of genocide during Israel’s ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip.

The evidence submitted includes images and videos posted by Benyaish himself, showing his direct involvement in the destruction of residential buildings in the Netzarim corridor—a heavily targeted area where thousands of Palestinian civilians were forcibly displaced. He appears in uniform, smiling in front of homes rigged with explosives. In these same images is fellow soldier Yuval Vagdani, also of the Givati Brigade, who was photographed in the moment explosives were being placed for a controlled demolition. The two acted together, knowingly and deliberately, in destroying civilian homes without any military justification.

This is not a matter of battlefield tragedy. It is the calculated and boastful destruction of civilian life, carried out with impunity and celebrated in social media posts. The detonation, which reduced entire homes to rubble, is not only a war crime under international humanitarian law—it is an expression of genocidal intent. These actions were not part of legitimate combat. They were designed to humiliate, terrorize, and annihilate a people, in flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions, the Rome Statute, and the most fundamental norms of human dignity.

Last December in Brazil, a judge issued a probe order against Yuval Vagdani for his role in this same crime. The Romanian complaint is therefore not isolated, but part of a broader international legal effort to end the impunity of soldiers who participate in the collective punishment and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population.

Romania, as a party to the Rome Statute and the Geneva Conventions, bears not only the legal competence but the moral obligation to act. When war criminals walk freely on foreign soil, justice demands intervention. The principle of universal jurisdiction exists precisely for such moments—when those responsible for atrocities are beyond the reach of justice in their own countries.

The international community has long borne witness to the structural impunity enjoyed by Israeli military personnel. This impunity has emboldened perpetrators to commit unspeakable crimes—openly, proudly, and without fear of consequence. It is time for this cycle to end.

We call on Romanian authorities to take urgent action: to launch a full criminal investigation, to prevent the suspect from leaving the country, to secure all relevant digital and physical evidence, and to cooperate with other jurisdictions pursuing related cases. Anything less would be a betrayal of the legal and ethical commitments that bind all nations in the defense of humanity.

Justice must not remain hostage to political considerations.

When the machinery of state is used to carry out acts of ethnic destruction, it falls on all people of conscience, and all states of law, to say: not in our name.

In Memory of Jerry Bridges (1929-2016)

"The fourth great truth that I learned was the necessity of preaching the gospel to myself every day. I learned to look to Christ as my righteousness rather than to my own performance. Early in my Christian life, I had gone from one extreme, what I call self-effort — this is what the Bible says, so just obey it — to the opposite extreme — you can’t do anything, just trust Jesus to live his life through you. . . . I am responsible to deal with sin, I am responsible to grow in the fruit of the Spirit, but I am dependent on the enabling power of Christ through the Holy Spirit to enable me to do that. - Jerry Bridges.

A Tail of Two Very Different Islands in the North Atlantic

This week people came to the aid of pilot whales stranded in the Isle of Skye. They did all they could to alleviate their suffering and return them to the sea. Meanwhile only a few hundred miles to the North a pod, of 150 pilot whales were spotted by the Faroese Coast Guard and driven into the bay at Midvagur and viciously massacred.

How can such extremities of humanity exist in two cultures separated by only a small body of water?

Why do some Faroese have the lust to extinguish the life of such gentle, socially complex, self aware, intelligent sentient beings?

What demons drive them to unfeelingly waste the lives of living creatures they do not understand?

Why on the other hand did people on the Island of Skye feel motivated to save these very same creatures, to do all they could to ease their pain?

Oh the Faroese whalers throw their pathetic justifications out in defence.

They need the meat. They don’t.

The meat is healthy. It isn’t.

It’s a tradition. So is slavery and witch burning.

What I find most amusing is in their denial of the pain and death they inflict. They accuse us who defend life of being evil, of not being tolerant, of being insensitive. They even accuse us of being racist like they are somehow of a different race set above all others and exempted from compassion.

Yes, we are intolerant of cruelty. Yes, we are insensitive to the death they inflict in the name of some long lost culture of barbarism. To be accused of being in the wrong while championing life and compassion, empathy and reverence is the ultimate in denial by those whose justify the screams they solicit with each psychotic thrust of their vicious knives.

The slaughter of the pilot whales and dolphins in the Faroes, like the massacre in the Cove in Taiji, Japan is an embarrassment to all of humanity. They say it is none of our business, BUT it is very much our business.

It is our business because we cherish life. It is our business because we abhor the sickening massacre of such gentle and intelligent beings. It is the business of any human being that retains an ounce of empathy and a modicum of compassion.

PRAY AND FAST

"Dear children! With the time of Lent, you are approaching a time of grace. Your heart is like ploughed soil and it is ready to receive the fruit which will grow into what is good. You, little dhildren, are free to choose good or evil. Therefore, I call you to pray and fast. Plant joy and the fruit of joy will grow in your hearts for your good, and others will see it and receive it through your life. Renounce sin and choose eternal life. I am with you and intercede for you before my Son. Thank you for having responded to my call." Message of January 25, 2008

In her last message, Our Lady entices us to prepare our hearts in the incoming time of lent, which is a time of mercy. She invites us to fast, pray, and make acts of penance, which were always the main features of the lent. In the Old Testament, the penance was reduced mostly to external signs. Today it is mostly so, because during the Lent the faithful renounce food, drinks, sweets and cigarettes, and much less swearing, gossiping and other sins. Christian fast and prayer are the foundation of the collectiveness, because the whole Church is invited to fast, penance and prayer, especially in the time of Christmastide and Lent. Renouncing the material things is only one way of penance for the personal sins. It is the proof that we are ready to renounce something and share with the people living in poverty and Squalor.

In our preparation, we must not stop at the external signs. The prophets of the Old Testament saw it clearly and warned the people that the only true change is the change which happens in the heart of men. If we change the heart, we change the whole man. Only such change can lead us to the friendship with God and people. Only in such way, our heart will receive the fruit which will grow into goodness. God created us as free beings and everyday we make decisions. We can choose between the good and the evil. The Queen of Peace invites us to renounce the sin and to choose eternal life. This is the only right choice. Every time we choose the good side, we chose the side of God’s sons and daughters and our life is filled with joy. We live a full life. Life is sin is only survival and suffering, while the life in God brings joy and peace. Here on Earth we can already taste the true joy if we live according to God’s commands, and we will experience the full joy in eternity, when God will wipe the tears from every face. Then, “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Rev 21, 4). Jesus is our first role model, example, and teacher of spiritual life. Before his first public appearance, Jesus retired into the desert for 40 days, where he fasted, prayed and prepared for his first public appearance. Moses has spent the same number of days on Sinai, and also Eliah on Horeb. In the quiet and solitude, a man can better hear God, because he is not burdened by any disturbances. To go into the desert, to retire, even for longer period of time if needed, should not be justification for escaping people, obligations or job. It should be a privileged time in which we will be renewed in the vicinity of God, so we can live among the people and witness the Joyful news to them. Jesus is the lord of our life and our hearts. He can do what we cannot, for what we do not have the strength.

Mary, “Mother of Church” and our mother, advocates us before her Son. Her advocating and mediating role she started during her life on Earth – at the wedding in Galilee Cana – and she continues with this role today, celebrated in the heaven. By coming here to Medjugorje, Our Lady wants to help us to unite more forcefully with our Savior and Redeemer. If we answer the call of the Queen of Peace and if we prepare with the fast and prayer for the meeting with Jesus, we will be able to participate in the celebration of Easter with clear heart and joyful soul.

EXPLORE # 176, 368 & 410 on Tuesday, February 5, 2008

That morning was cloudy and not so many people walked along the streets near St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral. I saw just single woman who was going probably to the market... The clouds flying through the sky and silhouette of gothic cathedral created mysterious atmosphere...

The St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church at the Treurenberg hill in Brussels, Belgium. In French, it is called Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule and in Dutch Sint-Michiels- en Sint-Goedelekathedraal, usually shortened to "Sint-Goedele". In 1047, Lambert II, Count of Leuven founded a chapter in this church and organized the transportation of the relics of Saint Gudula, housed before then in Saint Gaugericus Church on Saint-Géry Island. The patron saints of the church, archangel St. Michael and the martyr St. Gudula, are also the patron saints of the city of Brussels.

In the thirteenth century, the cathedral was renovated in the Gothic style. The choir was constructed between 1226 and 1276. The facade was completed in the mid-fifteenth century. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the interior are the stained glass windows, designed by various artists. Those by Bernard van Orley, a 16th century court painter, are the most spectacular...

But history of this cathedral contains not only light but also dark pages. In 1370, the Jewish community of Brussels was accused of the profanation of the Holy Sacrament and punished for this act. It was claimed that on Good Friday 1370 Jews used daggers to stab communion wafers which had been stolen from a chapel. Blood was said to have flowed from these wafers. It is a fact that in May 1370 some six Jews living in Brussels and Leuven were burnt at the stake after being accused of the theft and desecration of the Blessed Sacrament (the so called ‘Blood Libel’). Jewish property was confiscated, and that from the very beginning it was believed that the holy hosts had actually bled. Later on, in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was asserted that in 1370 all Jews had been expelled forever from the Duchy of Brabant. The guilt of the Jews was never established. On the contrary, it has never even been proven that the hosts had in fact been desecrated. Belief in the alleged miracle was the only justification for executing the Jews. The local devotion to the Miraculous Sacrament however survived up to the Second World War. Moreover, the stained glass windows, paintings and tapestries kept the alleged history of the ‘blood libel’ alive. Only after the tragedy of the Holocaust, and under the influence of a more enlightened mentality, was a critical attitude with regard to this anti-Jewish medieval legend...

This is the First experience with lightning shot. I dont know how far I have done the justification to the photograph

When I originally took this photo, I tried to level the Fiat. That tilted the horizon. So I straightened the horizon and tilted the Fiat.

Which one is better? Is there ever justification for a tilted horizon?

Join the 57,000+ people who (as of the morning of 19.09) have already signed the petition to demand #JusticeForChrisKaba

www.change.org/p/demand-justice-for-chris-kaba

On Saturday 17 September, hundreds of people gathered outside New Scotland Yard in central London to protest the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old black man in his car, by an armed police officer twelve days earlier at Streatham Hill in South London. There was no gun found either in the vehicle or anywhere nearby. Several of the protesters I spoke to, maintained that the young man and expectant father wouldn't have been shot dead had he not been black. Neither could they understand how Chris Kaba could have posed any possible immediate threat to life to justify the use of lethal force.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Labour MP for Streatham, told the crowd that

'When Chris Kaba was shot and killed, the narrative we heard from the media was that he was a drill artist, that he was a rapper, that he had been to prison before. Look at him. He's clearly a criminal.... almost as if to say that because of any of that and because he was a black man, he may have deserved what happened to him. That is a really popular narrative. When people get up and shout "Black lives matter" and people shout "Don't be ridiculous - all lives matter," there's a clear reason why they are doing it, because in popular narrative black lives don't, if they did people wouldn't be giving justifications for Chris to die in that way; nobody deserves to die in that way, let's be absolutely clear.'

Shortly afterwards, Jeremy Corbyn spoke and was critical of the police response.

"We are here today to mourn his (Chris Kaba's) death, mourn his passing, to remember his life, but also to show that we will never allow him to be forgotten. We will never allow the victims of this kind of violence on either side of the Atlantic ever to be forgotten. We cannot have a situation where somebody is shot dead through the windscreen of a car and the officer concerned is not immediately suspended from the police force, not from duty, from the police force. And as Bell (the MP) and others have pointed out, in any other job or profession or walk of life, if someone dies as a result of possibly your action you get suspended. If you are a train driver, a bus driver or a delivery driver involved in a terrible accident, you need to be suspended so that enquiries can take place. And so, I absolutely support the demands made by the family."

Some of those present at the protest had seen their family members either shot by the police or die in police custody. Among them was Lee Lawrence. In September 1985, when he was only eleven years old, his mother, Cherry Groce, had been paralysed from the chest down after being shot by a police officer inside their home, after she got up from her bed to investigate the noise caused by an early morning raid by officers who were looking for Lawrence's older brother Michael. His mother died in 2011, the year when Mark Duggan was shot dead in Tottenham sparking widespread civil unrest.

"We never got justice," Larwrence told the crowd. "Justice is about fairness and if we received justice my mother would not have been killed. We will hold their legacy and their deaths will stand for something. We owe it to them to never give up."

A hike through the Linville Gorge wilderness opens to this view atop Hawksbill Mountain. Though it's less than a mile from where you park, the trail is steep enough that it's physically daunting for many or just downright scary for others... which means it's often a place without others to spoil such reverie. Perched at a little over 4000 feet (1219 meters), the sky touches the landscape here in ways seldom seen elsewhere, and steeps this place in primordial splendor. The veil of sunlight through the clouds revels rather than hides what lays behind it as a jeweled scenery. This image, looking west across to Wiseman's View and sweeping north through the gorge toward Linville Falls, shows the majesty and the mystery of these mountains without one hint of the human element... sounds somewhat noble, doesn't it.

This past Sunday, I helped to put together a reception between first and second services at my church, Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian, here in Durham, North Carolina... it's a Christmas/New Year reception that allows us time in the new year to reset not just the various Sunday schools, but child care, and programs as well. There is, however, more to it than that... it is a church that I have returned to after helping to rebuild another that was destroyed by fire... I am still in the throes of reconnecting myself with familiar faces after many years gone and learning new ones. It was great to see how some I thought were so reserved are near crazy as I am (Terry's quite funny when he's off the reservation, Jill!). It was amazing to stand by and just watch my church family enjoy each other... to watch them be the church. We come here to worship and love God... you can't come away from that without also learning to love each other... to connect with that "human element", even if just a hint. My experience shows me that those whose Bibles are falling apart are owned by folks who are not... while the members of my church are not perfect, they are aware of their justification in Christ. There's a majesty and mystery to that, too... and every bit as beautiful as this.

Does your camera move and ruin some of your best shots? Who would know? You do not have to tell us. I surely will not tattle-tale on you. To me, moving the camera just right takes a lot of practice. Given enough exercise, it can become a form of ART for you also. I am so glad to do digital rather than film. Saving money is important, right? Processing 100,000+ shots on film would cost how much over the six months my fine P&S camera worked. Oh, those days, when I could take a nice foto out of 1,000 daily tries.

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 7, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI says prayer is the guarantee of openness to others, and without it, people run the risk of closing in on themselves.

The Pope affirmed this Wednesday, in the basilica of Santa Sabina on Rome's Aventine Hill, when he presided at a Eucharistic celebration during which the blessing and imposition of the ashes took place.

The Mass was preceded by a moment of prayer in the nearby Church of Sant'Anselmo, after which those present made their way in penitential procession to the basilica of Santa Sabina.

In his homily, the Holy Father reflected on the themes of prayer and suffering, as well as hope.

"Lent, precisely because it invites people to prayer, penance and fasting, represents a providential moment to revive and strengthen our hope," he said.

Prayer "is the primary and foremost 'weapon' with which to 'face the struggle against the spirit of evil,'" the Pontiff affirmed. He contended that "without the element of prayer, the human 'I' ends up by closing in on itself and the conscience, which should be the echo of the voice of God, risks being reduced to a mirror of the self. In the same way, interior dialogue becomes a monologue that gives rise to many forms of self-justification."

Motor of the world

Benedict XVI continued: "Thus prayer is a guarantee of openness to others. Those who free themselves for God and his needs, open themselves to others, to the brothers and sisters who knock at the door of their hearts and ask to be heard, ask for attention, for forgiveness, and sometimes for correction, but always in fraternal charity.

"True prayer is never centered on the self but always focuses on others. [...] True prayer is the motor of the world, because it keeps us open to God. For this reason, without prayer there is no hope, only illusion.

"It is not, in fact, the presence of God that alienates man, but his absence. Without the true God, Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, hope turns into an illusion that induces us to evade reality."

The Pope also said that "fasting and almsgiving, harmoniously linked to prayer, may also be considered as 'places' in which to learn the exercise of Christian hope.

"Thanks to the joint action of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Lent [...] forms Christians to be men and women of hope, following the example of the saints," he added.

On the subject of suffering, Benedict XVI recalled that Christ "suffered for truth and justice, bringing into the history of mankind the gospel of suffering, which is the other facet of the gospel of love. God cannot suffer, but he is able and wants to show 'com-passion.'"

"The greater the hope that animates us, the greater also is our capacity to suffer for the love of truth and goodness, joyfully offering up the small and great hardships of everyday life, and making them part of Christ's great 'com-passion,'" he said.

After recalling how the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes are currently being celebrated, the Pope concluded by inviting people "to meditate on the mystery of Mary's participation in the pains of humanity."

Hobnobbing with our social betters can be a hit-or-miss proposition, a fact that has an etymological justification. The verb hobnob originally meant "to drink together" and occurred as a varying phrase, hob or nob, hob-a-nob, or hob and nob, the first of which is recorded in 1763. This phrasal form reflects the origins of the verb in similar phrases that were used when two people toasted each other. The phrases were probably so used because hob is a variant of hab and nob of nab, which are probably forms of have and its negative. In Middle English, for example, one finds the forms habbe, "to have," and nabbe, "not to have." Hab or nab, or simply hab nab, thus meant "get or lose, hit or miss," and the variant hob-nob also meant "hit or miss." Used in the drinking phrase, hob or nob probably meant "give or take"; from a drinking situation hob nob spread to other forms of chumminess. (free dictionary)

What environment do you think is conducive to #fraud? go.usa.gov/24jW

www.dodig.mil/resources/fraud/index.html

so.. re: hazedous chems added to water in California - one day.. someone will be having problems and they will be blamed as mental health

laws from the past - and due to that the present will be there waiting for them like they have for millions of americans and others

mental health laws were enacted while hazardous materials / crimes that ARE known / admitted were not considered though they played a part

in being used for justification to alter the laws. WHILE NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THE CRIMES

USA agencies are also being used over seas. the way they function now = this will be used against us and we will be blamed for it as those

who got into our laws AND our very DNA will do as they have always done.. let others take the fall as they stand back with STOLEN money and

play the hero. it's the same endless loops we can see everywhere. in south Africa and all over Africa.. everywhere.

good conservatives were conned too. it does not pay to side with that which is illogical. interesting how smart people can be filled with

passions and a desire to do well - yet not see all variables. it's been this way for a very long time even before USA was here.

your enemies rooted in the country and did business in your name.. some ways = war crimes. Some like - fall guys and fall gals.

reminder-I wonder about people whoCling 2 historical figures. particularly politicians. it's a stage. it's mask city. we don't know whowaswho

you can look at the divisions and compare it to a dysfunctional family just as you can the entire world.

what's hard about it- or makes it difficult to figure out = usually if politicians don't play by others rules they are at a disadvantage.

usa would thrive and do good to get away from cruddy business from overseas by 1> nullifying copyrights and patents of those who do not play

nicely. 2> provide ourselves with our own food and meds - and yes WE CAN DO IT. "yes we can can can" do the can can 3> do it right

it is unwise .. to do business with those our vets warned us about. Example - it is wrong to do business with those whoUse populationControl

as a mask for murder. There are no justifications. ex: china's .. now two child policy.. which is odd because we trust reports of numbers?

for one thing.. it goes against national security common sense to reveal numbers in that area just as revealing info about tech and sci

or financial numbers.. nothing = accurate. all we are told = not accurate. In some areas of the world bitterness and revenge is kept alive

by using conflict. then the right to decide who lives and dies is handed down to said people. example :: who reports holocaust body counts?

do YOU go and count the dead bodies? Also-> babies in the womb are never correctly counted. any guess as to why and whose profile fits with

this? any guesses at all? I still need to confirm this -> a woman planted evidence at suspected homicide scenes and an officer say her. Now,

saw her -- Now, consider this.. how many fbi agents / officers were at the crime scenes and why did only one see it? TorF: she was called to

other countries to search for mass graves. It -might- have been at a time when it was easy to locate mass graves with satellites. keep this

in mind too-known tactic from the past those who use it didn't teach us in our school books / curriculum = use mass graves to set enemies up

when everyone is defensive.. logic is nowhere to be found. As I have seen when it comes to problems between families.

not sure about sats / locating mass graves. Ever wonder why we never hear about the fact religions = set up? KEEP IN MIND SAVILE NETWORKS

we were not told - what one entertainer mentioned - targeting "fundamentalists and orthodox" . check to see if sinead oconnor once

she's not the one who mentioned fundamentalists / traditional religious people in the way mentioned ... check to see if she mentioned infiltration and sabotage

not sure if she mentioned that or not. However.. when a group is attacked in such a way it also comes with damage to those not involved.

often they = the ones who enabled it. As was the case with jimmy Savile networks and similar as they defined what "cool" is and religious

people were pressured into feeling odd about being religious. they felt "uncool". I have seen this so many times it's not funny. so, what we

see in USA = in part from all that. As you can prove with data surrounding j sav's radio show broadcast locations and MORE.

compare :: how germans were guilted into submission to the point they now accept what their crooked politicians do. compare to how people

I mean .. how you can see the same thing in USA. Yet again another tactic we were not taught as to be left unprepared and in the open

would it not make sense to warn new arrivals in Europe about said sav nets? Why not do for them what was denied for others.. PROTECT THEIR

CHILDREN .. and respect will be increased. obviously. Avoiding what some anticipate and is known as.. what is it. clash of civilizations

it pays to learn from those who blazed the trail for desegregation in USA while remembering there were many stepping on toes throughout

t or f :: often in conflict resolution scenarios - those responsible for moderating it seek common points of interest to build a bridge

prove we are not like that woman with obvious psychological issues from the United Nations who said 500,100 dead Iraqi children = acceptable

should remind - I ponder what Simon Wiesenthal did with numbers / debates around them

also keep in mind - another tactic we were not shown =to kill citizens during war and blame the enemy. T or F: during operation desert storm

soldiers were prescribed a large number of extremely powerful medications - which n o b o d y EVER reacts the same to.

t or f :: we still do business with those who do that and more then still believe the primitive CRUD known as culling= a good idea. 2ThisDay

t or f :: some were hikding up interest rates as high as %800 as they kinda black mailed military leaders in the battle field by telling

them soldiers would not receive vital gear. T or F : this = likely to have been more going on = justifies exploring more.. and also might

mean we would be wise to consider the reaction of fans to jimmy Savile crimes. As in.. those we worship, present to take the place and

coincide with feelings we have for parents / loved ones... as to take advantage and manipulate. As in - we trust too easily.

basically - part of SAV's layered role was to take the place of lost loved ones who were taken during war and after they were TOLD war ended

we were and are fed a bunch of lies in order to continue to be used. they took advantage of known psychological reactions including

associative disorders / becoming to clingy after loss or during problems.. so on. It fits the profile of pages I can show you from UK in

which they constantly work to bring out shallow variables - and destroy families. THEY ARE STILL FOWLLING THE SAME TEMPLATE.

and they broadcast in our country as well as others. AND .. SAV NETS = not the only one.

I'm rather bored with being a chump.. a fool.. a sucker.. how about you?

reminder- not all of Europe is as such. And you can't blame the people just as you can't blame them when law makers decided to help SAV NETS

and make it legal for five years olds to get drunk. chit faced. sloshed. You can dissect recent history in Europe and locate all known

areas of interest of said and similar.. "people" - step by step. Including inaccurate data pertaining to legalizing drugs. They left out the

fact addicts were from a long line of war and lack of correct counseling which I see as intentional based on the level of sophistication

in the mental health a r e n a in Europe. Also. you can examine baby furnaces for clues. And those seeking to bring back mobile death squads

as to help anyone who wants to kill themselves do just that. Including but not limited to teenagers, and people who suffer with botched

plastic surgeries.. which also includes gender reassignment surgery. Then.. if you examine how said do business in other countries it keeps

pace with similar tactics as seen elsewhere. and NOT the exclusive trademark / calling card of only one group of a few.

culling.. how stupid can we be anyway? obviously any who sees that as a good idea would go about mentioned and then some. Well, my little

Dumbarton Park, D.C, petunias. If I keep going at the pace I have been this week.. with too little sleep. I will prob die in about 5 months

reminder : confirm what "rif raf" =. And before criticizing Ellen Duh Gene Rez more.. determine if she was referring to the fact Europe and

and others intentionally inbreed Giraffes then feed them to lions in front of zoo-goes and their children.. when she used the term.

along with Giraffe.. Rif Raf the giraffe. I still say ellen =a fake kumare' category I have created. kumare' can be anyone.. anything. male

or female.Kumare' can be about gender-sexual orientation- politics and obviously religion. Entertainers like russle brand are kumara like

and yes I did meet someone who later became a programmer for FBI. I watched his house for him once. And his wifes family was mafia. He said

time. And I probably sketched some people out in a major way x200. I didn't mean to. I just didn't consider level of knowledge regarding

that which I have always been around. So.. sadly I didn't piece it together until recently. Some of it just now.

quit when they started asking questions as I felt I would be as mentioned women and men. I don't know what's connected - as of now.

those who are religious - examine how at times you fear sci and tech. multiply that x50 for those outside the country in some areas.

you don't have to be religious to be afraid of it, obviously. you do have to admit the soul adds more to how they perceive it.. as in

a different perspective with a bit more at stake for them than those who believe we simply die and that's it.

note - does putin watch tons of TV? Does it mess with his head at times? What's the darkest story he knows? what's the oddest "stuff"

if all politicians were to sit and talk about religion. How would it go? Is it possible some areas reflect their fears.. hesitations?

it doesn't seem that way when they meet, shake hands.. smile.. make business deals.

ok. .I'll find the link. this is really messing with my head.

oh. hi. it's me again. guess what. still in the same boat. shrug. well. .I'll find all that about _conflict resolution_ thought I doubt some

will mention that too can be part of a long term plan / known.

it's true. I didn't make it up to gain some kind of advantage with thousands of secret service employees

you mean to tell me there are people in secret service as hard headed as me? ruh roh. this may never end.

might as well bring out the controversial "shtuff". ok. hm. let me see. Some say that secret service actually runs everything.

and there might be problems at home with the politicians. Do you guys ever argue.. anyone drink too much? so on..

does one make some a bit more uncomfortable than they would prefer? do we all feel safe openly communicating? do youkeep your blinds closed?

I'd be a complete wreck if I was in secret service. Are you kidding.. they would put me in a jar and study me for the future

and how to their pets act.. are they happy and bushytailed? stressed? usually it's best to start from the "top" and work your way "down" as some label it all anyway.

now, for our first session can we be honest? Who has the most body-liquefaction chambers?

Yes, I'm afraid I have to call in the Two Bobs

let's see.. dealing with psychological issues of those who work with body liquefaction chambers.. where is that link?

are they " liquidated" .. those who can't handle it?

Fall is finally on it's way! I'm starting to make some plans for seasonal tabletops... Logic: If I post these, it will pressure me into actually completing some dioramas. Right? In the background - Some of my teasets which I, of course, purchased under the justification that I would use them in dioramas. Shame me into actually doing something with them.

(Linnaeus, 1766)

The Blue Dacnis or Turquoise Honeycreeper, Dacnis cayana, is a small passerine bird. This member of the tanager family is a resident breeder from Nicaragua to Panama, on Trinidad, and in South America south to Bolivia and northern Argentina.

It occurs in forests and other woodlands. The bulky cup nest is built in a tree and the normal clutch is brown-blotched white two eggs. The female incubates the eggs, but is fed by the male.

The Blue Dacnis is 12.7 cm long and weighs 13 g. It has a relatively short bill compared to other honeycreepers. The adult male is turquoise blue with a black forehead, throat and back. The wings and tail are black edged with turquoise. The female and immature are mainly green with a blue head, paler green underparts and green-edged brown wings.

These are social birds which eat mainly insects gleaned from foliage, flowers or bromeliads. Fruit is often taken and usually swallowed whole, but nectar is rarely consumed. The Blue Dacnis’s call is a fruit thin tsip.

On my walk to work today; this is the bridge from Cooks Meadow, crossing the Merced River to the Yosemite Chapel. A place of worship should be a sanctuary, but sadly many are not. I have spoken with Targeted Individuals that have had their congregations turn on them, harass, stalk and shun them. I know of people that go to this chapel that actively participates in the Community Based Stalking and Workplace Mobbing; in Yosemite National Park. I know my comments offend many here in the Park, but they need to be said, they need to be heard.

People used to be burned alive, because people with influence rallied others and called them Witches. People used to be hanged, because people with influence rallied others and called them Negroes. Millions were murdered, because people with influence rallied a Nation and called them Jews. And, people think Gang Stalking, Community Based Stalking and Workplace Mobbing are far fetched.

Today, people with influence rally others using fear, manipulation, false accusations and innuendos; to stalk, harass, bully, psychologically torture Targeted Individuals (TIs).

After my last photo and post (Frosty) I knew there would be retaliation and there was. These atrocities need to be told. It frustrates and angers me, because we as a people need to be better than this, we as a country need to be better than this. Again, the sad truth is we are not. This Mobbing Mentality has spread into almost every community in America. It can be called Gang Stalking, Community Based Stalking and Workplace Mobbing. These people somehow try to justify their actions, but there is no justification for these atrocities. The truth is that many people who speak out in America are Targeted, even our children.

A few examples:

Girl gets raped. She goes public about assault. Victim questioned about her validity and shamed by whole town (16-year-old rape victim Steubenville, Ohio).

A 14-year-old girl rape victim who angered her neighbors in a small town had her house burned down after she came forward and implicated a local football star in the assault. Her family shunned, her mother (a veterinarian) was fired from her job two weeks after the incident (Maryville, MO).

2012, over 24,000 sexual assaults reported in US Military. Victims shunned by their units, their Chain of Command, false statements and diagnosis placed in their medical records to prevent them from any form of VA disabilities or compensation (San Francisco Chronicle).

This is America today; we have to be better than this….

Sort of a light fighter/reconnaissance type. Or at least that is the justification for the pod dish. It almost classifies as an ALT model from the Mongoose

A day of rest….or a date of infamy…

Another view of 8962 (YX62BCK) showing its new livery. These will be the first buses to bear the new Eastern Scottish livery and will hopefully mark the start of the rebirth of the company.

However my attention was drawn to one of the recruitment posters on the rear of the bus which is promising ‘no Sunday shifts’. That may surprise you….well it shouldn’t. And that’s because from May 8th there will be no Sunday services on any Eastern Scottish services.

New owners McGill’s have announced a ‘network review’ which is corporate speak for service changes. However this review is brutal. Indeed the infamous and much unfairly derided Dr Beeching would probably think this review was a touch harsh.

It’s clear that Eastern Scottish isn’t a company with its problems to seek. Driver recruitment and retention is a major problem and even Lothian is struggling there too.

So to stem the losses and improve reliability, it’s taken the drastic step to cease services on Sunday. Although there are some operators that don’t run on Sundays for various reasons it’s unusual for an operator to cease to run services on a Sunday that had been running them before.

Of course this has enraged the good people of West Lothian and their elected representatives who are now facing the prospect of no public transport running in various communities. As you can imagine, they’ve been very angrily denouncing the move which they will say hit the most vulnerable hardest.

McGill’s argue - and with some justification - that not enough people were travelling on a Sunday and as a result the services were incurring considerable losses. It’s odd though as Sunday services in other parts of Scotland, particularly in the cities can be quite busy. Livingston is after all quite a busy shopping destination. However by consolidating their staff on other days they can improve performance on those days. It may also help recruiting too as it may make it more attractive if new recruits can get every Sunday off.

Of course the detractors point out that the reason folk may not have been travelling is that the services were so unreliable that folk were making alternative arrangements. And there’s a suggestion this could be a move to force the local authority into subsidising services.

However although West Lothian Council has stumped up some funds for services on other days it’s shown no real want or desire to provide funds for Sunday services, or even offer tenders for alternative operators. So an impasse has been reached.

It’s a tricky one this. I can see both sides but the current situation helps no one. I’m not sure how you encourage folk to use the bus by taking them off en masse but at the same time, if not enough folk are travelling then it’s unsustainable. But either way, a large swathe of east central Scotland is facing limited public transport options this coming Sunday (14/5/2023). I hope it can be resolved,

Conceptual graphics, direct acrylic painting, inspired by one of my sketches in the eighties.

Loose notes, artist lateral diary.

From my perspective our planet is the home of all, humans but also of the incredible variety of living beings, the bio diversity, the immensity of its seas and oceans, its forests and jungles, its steppes, deserts and mountains. The great ode to life in our galaxy and even and possible far from it.

Since my childhood I have always been struck by the contempt of so many human beings towards nature, that desire to tame or destroy it.

Those ideological justifications of total human-centrism where everything that is not ourselves are only inert objects. Curious dogma of people who believe and see itself civilized, with the added inheritance of hundreds of previous civilizations.

I saw the decades go by and unfortunately the situation of the planet and the human arrogance and insensitivity, imbued with hyper materialism and the very false precept that the end justifies the means, has been expanding instead of going back.So I think the general question posed by the painting and which in turn contains other questions remains valid. ffmendoza not edited

Romans 3:21–30 (ESV)

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

JUSTIFICATION—a forensic term, opposed to condemnation. As regards its nature, it is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law, i.e., as conformed to all its demands. In addition to the pardon (q.v.) of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied in respect of the justified. It is the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom. 5:1–10).

It proceeds on the imputing or crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, active and passive, of his Representative and Surety, Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:3–9). Justification is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law, namely, Christ’s righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 4:6–8).

The sole condition on which this righteousness is imputed or credited to the believer is faith in or on the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith is called a “condition,” not because it possesses any merit, but only because it is the instrument, the only instrument by which the soul appropriates or apprehends Christ and his righteousness (Rom. 1:17; 3:25, 26; 4:20, 22; Phil. 3:8–11; Gal. 2:16).

The act of faith which thus secures our justification secures also at the same time our sanctification (q.v.); and thus the doctrine of justification by faith does not lead to licentiousness (Rom. 6:2–7). Good works, while not the ground, are the certain consequence of justification (6:14; 7:6). (See GALATIANS, EPISTLE TO.)

This ESO Picture of the Week features a galaxy named both NGC 4254 and Messier 99, a beautiful cosmic spectacle located in the constellation of Coma Berenices (Berenice’s Hair).

Messier 99 is special, owing to its classification as a grand design spiral galaxy: a kind of galactic architecture featuring strong, prominent, well-defined arms that wrap clearly around the galaxy’s centre. Only around 10 percent of all spirals are of the grand design variety, making objects like Messier 99 somewhat uncommon. The justification behind Messier 99’s categorisation is clear in this image; bright, swirling arms carve through the dark surrounding space, and are easily identifiable as a number of different, coherent structures.

This image was created as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme, an outreach initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects using ESO telescopes, for the purposes of education and public outreach. The programme makes use of telescope time that cannot be used for science observations. All data collected may also be suitable for scientific purposes, and are made available to astronomers through ESO’s science archive.

The Yeni Mosque, New Mosque or Mosque of the Valide Sultan (Turkish: 'Yeni Cami, Yeni Valide Camii') is an Ottoman imperial mosque located in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey. It is situated on the Golden Horn at the southern end of the Galata Bridge. It is one of the best-known sights of Istanbul.

History

The first stage in construction of the mosque started in 1597 with a decree by Safiye Sultan, the wife of Sultan Murad III. The original architect was Davut Aga, an apprentice to the great Mimar Sinan. However, Davut Aga died in 1599 and was replaced by Dalgic Ahmed Cavus.

The project was hampered by political disconnect, and its location and monetary implications created dissent in the court. The Eminönü neighborhood was the city's foremost commercial center, and home to a predominantly Jewish population. In situating the mosque there, Safiye Sultan hoped to extend the sphere of Islamic influence within the city, capitalizing on the growing discontent of local and foreign merchants with the growing power and influence of their Jewish counterparts, which gave the Sultan an easy justification for confiscating their property. However, the vast monetary outlay drew sharp criticism. In particular, the Janissaries resented the growing political power of the Valide Sultan, and believed the mosque to be an unnecessary expenditure. Safiye Sultan was forced to abandon the project upon Mehmet III's death. The new Sultan Ahmed I had no interest in pursuing the project after Safiye Sultan was relegated to the harem and the construction was abandoned.

The partially constructed structure fell into ruins, and was largely destroyed by a fire in 1660. Later that year, the imperial architect Mustafa Aga suggested that Valide Turhan Hadice, mother of Sultan Mehmet IV, complete the project as a work of piety. The mosque was finally finished in 1663, and inaugurated in 1665.

Architecture

[edit] Exterior

The exterior of the mosque itself boasts sixty-six domes and semi domes in a pyramidal arrangement, as well as two minarets. The main dome measures thirty-six meters in height, and is supported by four flanking semi-domes. The dome plan of the New Mosque is based on the earlier Sinan's Şehzade Mosque and Sedefhar Mehmet Ağa's Sultan Ahmed Mosque.

As with other imperial mosques in Istanbul, the mosque itself is preceded by a monumental courtyard (avlu) on its west side. The courtyard at the New Mosque is 39 meters on a side, bordered on its inner side by a colonnaded peristyle covered by 24 small domes. An elegant sadirvan (ablution fountain) stands in the center, but is only ornamental, as the ritual purifications are performed with water taps on the south wall of the mosque. The façade of the mosque under the porch is decorated with İznik tiles. Stone blocks supplied from the island of Rhodes were used in the construction of the mosque.

Interior

The interior of the mosque is a square 41 meters on each side. The central area is defined by four large piers which are the main support for the dome. On the sides and rear of the central area are colonnades of slender marble columns connected by arches in a variety of styles. The dome is 17.5 meters in diameter and has a height of 36 meters. The interior space is extended with semi-domes along the east-west axis of the building, with smaller domes above each corner of the nave and even smaller domes above the corners of the galleries.

The northeast corner of the gallery has a gilded screen, behind which members of the imperial court could attend services. This Royal Loge is connected by a long elevated passageway to a Royal Pavilion in the northeast corner of the mosque complex.

The interior of the mosque is decorated with blue, green and white İznik tiles, which are considered somewhat inferior in quality to tiles in earlier imperial mosques. The mihrab is decorated with gilded stalactites and the mimbar had a conical canopy with slender marble columns.

Complex

As with other imperial mosques in Istanbul, the New Mosque was designed as a kulliye, or complex with adjacent structures to service both religious and cultural needs. The original complex consisted of the mosque itself, a hospital, primary school, public baths, Turbe, two public fountains and a market. To this complex was added a library during the reign of Sultan Ahmet III.

The large L-shaped market survives today as the Egyptian Bazaar (also known as the "Spice Bazaar"), a well-known Istanbul tourist attraction.

The mausoleum (turbe) holds the graves of the Valide Sultan Turhan Hadice, her son Mehmet IV as well as five later sultans (Mustafa II, Ahmet II, Mahmut I, Osman III and Murat V) and various members of the court.

The title is a lyric from Nick Cave's "Mercy Seat". It's arguably silly to use the words "And anyway I told the truth, and I'm not afraid to die" as a tribute to a paragon of virtue like The Lone Ranger when the song's about a man on death row who concludes his sad tale of paranoia and self-justification with the words "but I'm afraid I told a lie," but here we are.

Categoria: Vulnerável

Mede 53 cm. Tem face azul-clara, bico róseo. Habita campos secos, arrozais, lugares pouco alagados.

Mede 53 cm. Face azul - clara, bico róseo.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistling_Heron

The Whistling Heron, Syrigma sibilatrix, is a medium-sized, often terrestrial heron of South America. There are two subspecies, the southern S. s. sibilatrix and the northern S. s. fostersmithi.

Description:

The Whistling Heron measures 53 to 64 cm in length and weighs 521 to 546 g. The southern subspecies is bigger but has a shorter bill in proportion to the body.[1]

The overall impression of standing birds is gray, with flying birds showing conspicuous white rear parts (lower back, belly, and tail). In both subspecies, adults' upperparts except the lower back are blue-gray.[1][2] The feathers of the sides of head, sides of the neck, breast, and scapular area are basically white but are stained gold to buff, perhaps by the powder down typical of herons or by secretions of the preen gland; the color varies from bird to bird. In the nominate subspecies, the crown and crest (separate plumes up to 4 cm long on the nape) are black and the upper wing coverts are cinnamon-colored; the crown and crest are slate-gray and the upper wing coverts are honey-colored (or "chamois"[2]) in fostersmithi.[1] The bill is pink with blue to violet at the base and the distal third black, the legs are greenish and rather short, and there is a fairly big area of bare bluish skin around the eye.[1][2]

Juveniles have the same overall pattern but are duller than adults, with the crown lighter, the breast light gray, and the throat and sides unstained white.[1][2] Chicks are undescribed.[1]

The bird is named for its most common call, a "loud, flute-like whistled kleeer-er"[2] or "a high, reedy, complaining whistle, often doubled or uttered in a ser[ies], wueeee, wueeee,.…, easily imitated" [3] or "a distinctive, characteristic, far-carrying, melodious whistle" that "can be rendered 'kee, kee, kee.'"[1] It may also give "a slow, drawn-out whistle" when taking off.[1] The alarm call is a harsh quah-h-h.[2]

Unlike other herons, in flight it has fast, duck-like wingbeats and usually does not retract its neck fully.[1]

Range and habitat

The subspecies fostersmithi inhabits the Llanos and the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. There are no breeding records "yet" from Colombia.[1][2] The subspecies sibilatrix inhabits eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, western and southern Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and northeastern Argentina. Recent records suggest that it may be expanding its range northward and eastward in Brazil. It makes seasonal movements at least in northeastern Venezuela, where it does not occur from November to January, but remains all year in other areas, such as Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.[1]

It occurs at altitudes up to 500 m (with a sight record from 2300 m[3]) in seasonally flooded savanna, often in drier grassy situations than other herons, but also in a wide variety of open waterlogged or shallowly submerged terrain. Because it roosts in trees, it particularly likes regions where open areas are mixed with woodlots. It has no objection to human-altered habitats such as pastures and roadsides, and it often perches on fenceposts.[1]

Although patchily distributed, it is common in many areas, with no population considered vulnerable. It benefits from deforestation and some agriculture.[1] As a successful heron of dry tropical country, it has been compared to two species originating in the Old World: the Cattle Egret and the Black-headed Heron.[4]

Behavior

Feeding

This species eats any small dryland and marsh animals it can catch, or even pirate[1] (as from an Aplomado Falcon in one reported incident[4]). It often holds still[1][2][3] but also walks very slowly[4] and may use more active techniques, even running after prey or catching flying insects (notably dragonflies[3]) from a standing position.[1] It may allow humans to approach fairly closely rather than leave a good feeding spot.[1] It typically feeds alone or in pairs, but is sometimes seen in groups up to 100,[2] especially before roosting for the night.[1]

Reproduction

In a courtship display, the birds fly back and forth and glide in circles. A captive pair displayed by raising their plumes.[1]

This species nests alone, unlike most herons, which nest in colonies. It may nest in mature trees such as araucarias or exotic trees.[1]. One nest in Argentina was loosely built of sticks about 4m up in a eucalyptus.[3] The eggs are pale blue and speckled, about 4.7 × 3.6 cm, and the normal clutch is three or four. Incubation lasts about 28 days, and young fledge 42 days after hatching. Egg survival has been measured at 28% and nestling survival at 40%; storms that destroy nests are an important cause of losses. Based on observations of family groups, only two young normally fledge. Unlike most heron species, Whistling Herons care for young after leaving the nest; juveniles beg for food by hissing with their wings drooped.[1]

Skeletal resemblances to the night herons have led to a debate about whether the Whistling Heron is related to them, but since the 1980s it has been at least provisionally considered a relative of the genus Egretta, with little doubt that it belongs in a genus of its own.[1][5]

Cultural significance

Indigenous peoples formerly used its neck plumes as trade items, though not so heavily as to reduce populations.[1]

There are two subspecies of Whistling Heron, S. s. sibilatrix found in Bolivia, SE Brazil and NE Argentina and S. s. fostersmithi found in E Colombia and Venezuela which is smaller and paler.

It is quite distinctive with its red bill with black tip, its blue bare skin around the eyes, its golden neck and its blue-grey back.

Whistling Heron, Brazil, Sept 2000 - click for larger image It gets its name from the rather melodious whistle that it makes in contrast to the coarse calls of most herons.

It feeds during the day on grasshoppers, frogs, eels, etc. and is probably less dependant on water for its food than any other heron.

The Brazilians call it "Maria-faceira" or "Mary the coquette".

You might have a strong need for being useful to the society and you look for justification in the outside world. You may underestimate what you want from yourself and for yourself. Shyness may be accompanied by resentment of the fact that others ignore you. Do not seek approval from the outside, it will not help you get rid of your doubt and it is harmful to you. You have to trust your inner values.

Classe: Aves

Ordem: Ciconiformes

Família: Ardeidae

Nome científico: Syrigma sibilatrix

Nome vulgar: Maria-faceira

Categoria: Vulnerável

Mede 53 cm. Tem face azul-clara, bico róseo. Habita campos secos, arrozais, lugares pouco alagados.

Mede 53 cm. Face azul - clara, bico róseo.

Habita campoa secos, arrozais, lugares pouco alagados.

Ocorre do Rio de Janeiro e Minas Gerais à Argentina, Paraguai e Bolívia, também na Venezuela e Colômbia.

The southern subspecies is bigger but has a shorter bill in proportion to the body.

The overall impression of standing birds is gray, with flying birds showing conspicuous white rear parts (lower back, belly, and tail). In both subspecies, adults' upperparts except the lower back are blue-gray. The feathers of the sides of head, sides of the neck, breast, and scapular area are basically white but are stained gold to buff, perhaps by the powder down typical of herons or by secretions of the preen gland; the color varies from bird to bird. In the nominate subspecies, the crown and crest (separate plumes up to 4 cm long on the nape) are black and the upper wing coverts are cinnamon-colored; the crown and crest are slate-gray and the upper wing coverts are honey-colored (or "chamois") in fostersmithi. The bill is pink with blue to violet at the base and the distal third black, the legs are greenish and rather short, and there is a fairly big area of bare bluish skin around the eye.

Juveniles have the same overall pattern but are duller than adults, with the crown lighter, the breast light gray, and the throat and sides unstained white. Chicks are undescribed.

The bird is named for its most common call, a "loud, flute-like whistled kleeer-er" or "a high, reedy, complaining whistle, often doubled or uttered in a ser[ies], wueeee, wueeee,.…, easily imitated" or "a distinctive, characteristic, far-carrying, melodious whistle" that "can be rendered 'kee, kee, kee.'" It may also give "a slow, drawn-out whistle" when taking off. The alarm call is a harsh quah-h-h.

Unlike other herons, in flight it has fast, duck-like wingbeats and usually does not retract its neck fully.

Range and habitat

The subspecies fostersmithi inhabits the Llanos and the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. There are no breeding records "yet" from Colombia. The subspecies sibilatrix inhabits eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, western and southern Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and northeastern Argentina. Recent records suggest that it may be expanding its range northward and eastward in Brazil. It makes seasonal movements at least in northeastern Venezuela, where it does not occur from November to January, but remains all year in other areas, such as Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

It has no objection to human-altered habitats such as pastures and roadsides, and it often perches on fenceposts.

Although patchily distributed, it is common in many areas, with no population considered vulnerable. It benefits from deforestation and some agriculture. As a successful heron of dry tropical country, it has been compared to two species originating in the Old World: the Cattle Egret and the Black-headed Heron.

Behavior

Feeding

This species eats any small dryland and marsh animals it can catch, or even pirate[1] (as from an Aplomado Falcon in one reported incident). It often holds still but also walks very slowly and may use more active techniques, even running after prey or catching flying insects (notably dragonflies) from a standing position. It may allow humans to approach fairly closely rather than leave a good feeding spot. It typically feeds alone or in pairs, but is sometimes seen in groups up to 100, especially before roosting for the night.

Reproduction

In a courtship display, the birds fly back and forth and glide in circles. A captive pair displayed by raising their plumes.

This species nests alone, unlike most herons, which nest in colonies. It may nest in mature trees such as araucarias or exotic trees. One nest in Argentina was loosely built of sticks about 4m up in a eucalyptus. The eggs are pale blue and speckled, about 4.7 × 3.6 cm, and the normal clutch is three or four. Incubation lasts about 28 days, and young fledge 42 days after hatching. Egg survival has been measured at 28% and nestling survival at 40%; storms that destroy nests are an important cause of losses. Based on observations of family groups, only two young normally fledge. Unlike most heron species, Whistling Herons care for young after leaving the nest; juveniles beg for food by hissing with their wings drooped.

Taxonomy

Skeletal resemblances to the night herons have led to a debate about whether the Whistling Heron is related to them, but since the 1980s it has been at least provisionally considered a relative of the genus Egretta, with little doubt that it belongs in a genus of its own.

Cultural significance

Indigenous peoples formerly used its neck plumes as trade items, though not so heavily as to reduce populations.[1]

Founded in 1906 by Rev. Katsuyoshi Miyao near Aala Park, the shinto shrine of Izumo Taishakyo was located in a temporary building during its early years, before a permanent building was completed in 1922. The shrine thrived and by 1941 had branches in other areas of Honolulu, as well as on Maui and Hawai’i. The shrine was shut down after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, due to suspicions of the loyalties of its Japanese congregation and priest. This led to the priest of the Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii being interred with his family at an internment camp on the mainland of the United States, returning to Hawaii in 1945 to find that the shrine had been illegally stolen by the City and County of Honolulu in 1942 using the war as justification for the seizure of the property. Between 1946 and 1968, a warehouse in the McCully neighborhood was utilized as the main shrine while a legal battle was underway to get the original shrine back. In 1961, after a lengthy legal battle, the original shrine property was awarded back to the congregation, only to have the property condemned again by urban renewal, with the Federal Housing Administration seeking to redevelop the Aala area on the edge of Chinatown. Thus, in 1963, the shrine building from 1922 was relocated to its present location. In 1968-69, the shrine was restored, and was rededicated in December of 1968. Today, the shrine continues to serve a dedicated congregation, with their history telling a story of perseverance and resilience, but also of the ugly anti-Japanese racism that pervaded the United States in the mid-20th Century.
