Inspired by @dollsahoy‘s jointed curvy custom I finally bit the bullet and got myself some Hobby Base ball shaped joints in the flesh colour since she confirmed the joints were big enough to work on 1/6th scale. I’ve been tempted to get some before but considering how this type of parts is geared towards hobbyists in the 1/12 scale and smaller I didn’t want to risk getting a bunch of useless parts.

This pack comes with ball parts sized 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and one 12mm part. I decided to get two sets just so I could have an even amount of parts. I really want to get slightly larger ball parts that were bigger than 12mm for knee joints but it seems like this was the biggest parts. Coincidentally, the “flesh” colour is a decent match to Mattel’s “Nostalgia”/Purple MTM skin tone.

Since I was dragging out a bunch of equipment for this I decided to do a bunch of dolls. The basic idea is that you slice through where you want to give your doll a joint, drill into both ends to fit the ball joint’s pegs, then bevel the edges so the ball joint fits in seamlessly.

For the drill bit, I used a 3mm drill bit and it was a snug fit for all the joints. I didn’t use glue in any of these joints except when I used them for hands as I needed to trim the peg down so it wouldn’t stick out of the palm.

I used the 10mm Ball joints for both of my Curvy elbows, and then gave them MTM hands since I didn’t want to COMPLETELY reinvent the wheel if I don’t have to.

I used 12mm ball parts for my Broad Ken elbows however these were a tiny bit too small. But…. I already committed to it by cutting his arms so they work but I wished I had 14mm or 16mm ball joints instead. Since his arms were hollow I filled them with tissue and a lot of superglue, then drilled into that since it’s my easiest and fastest way of building up hard material in a doll.

For both Broad Ken and Legolas’ wrists I used 8mm ball joints. I accidentally drilled into Broad Ken’s palm for one of his hands so I decided to cut the peg in half and exercised more caution when drilling into all the other hands, and glued the ball joint in the hand to stop it falling out.

Anyway, I’m really surprised how strong these joints are in comparison to Volks/Figma/Nendoroid ball joints cuz they didn’t fall apart and they’re quite stiff which is good for posing.

I may have ordered some more sets from HLJ to try articulating more dolls.

This is my collection of ball-jointed dolls (so far!)

Most of them are from Pipos while the much smaller ones are from Dollfactory.

Will probably name them soon, named only two so far.

This is an incredibly useful technique. I first learned it on the Aspis mech from Grandpappy, who have seen it from Moko.

This is the Christening cake I did with the 3 weddings this weekend. It was a Joint Christening for a Brother and Sister, the request was for their 'cuddle teddies' to be in the design, the photo bottom right is the photo i was sent of their teddies. I adapted them slighly by adding pink/blue, as thought it would be nice as it was a cake for both of them. I was so excited to use my patchwork square cutter/embossers and used them with a touch Andrea sweetcakes style stitching :o)

Inside the fairing, JPSS-2 is stacked atop NASA’s Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) secondary payload. JPSS-2 is the third satellite in the Joint Polar Satellite System series. It is scheduled to lift off from VSFB on Nov. 1 from SLC-3. JPSS-2, which will be renamed NOAA-21 after reaching orbit, will join a constellation of JPSS satellites that orbit from the North to the South pole, circling Earth 14 times a day and providing a full view of the entire globe twice daily. The NOAA/NASA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite, and NOAA-20, previously known as JPSS-1, are both already in orbit. Each satellite carries at least four advanced instruments to measure weather and climate conditions on Earth. LOFTID is dedicated to the memory of Bernard Kutter. LOFTID will demonstrate inflatable heat shield technology that could enable a variety of proposed NASA missions to destinations such as Mars, Venus, and Titan, as well as returning heavier payloads from low-Earth orbit. Hey guys! I will be posting the 4th day of my series tomorrow. Anyway this is what I have been working on.

Here are three different types of jointed arms that use the antenna and skeleton technique. From left to right:

Billbobful's design: Puts the skeleton joint and antennae into the torso so it is not as visible. Which takes away the huge step of cutting half of the arm off in Pedro's design.

Pros: Hides the joint itself.

Cons: It does not have the same mobility as Pedro's design. When the antennas are being put in, it is VERY easy to mess up and make them uneven and therefore makes one arm have its joint more exposed than the other.

I call this next one the "reversed billbobful" .

I thought this one up thinking that it would not only retain the mobility, but it would be MUCH easier to put it in a torso. Which it did! But since the inside of a minifig's torso is not flat, I had to add something between the inside of the torso and the joint so that it would be flat, that is why the joints can be seen. This design is still a WIP.

Pros: much easier to put in. Can do a "choke" or "face palm" position.

Cons: It does not have the same mobility as Pedro's design.

Last but not least, Pedro's design.

Pros: Has full mobility exterior wise and is medium hard to install compared to the other types.

Cons: it is not as easy to install compared to the Reversed Billbobful type. Joint is fully exposed.

Please tell me which one you guys like the most and which you think is the easiest.

Enjoy!

Three trains are in view at near Palmer Lake, Colorado at a location know as “Sag” or Spruce. When the Santa Fe built its line between Colorado Springs and Denver, Rio Grande was already there, and per agreements, had to utilize several flyovers. One of these is seen here between the trains. In 1918, Colorado and Southern (later, Burlington Northern)/Santa Fe and Rio Grande began a joint operating agreement and the Joint Line was born. The tracks were realigned and crossovers were eliminated to simplify operations. But the 1974 removal of the Santa Fe route through Colorado Springs created a single-track bottleneck between Palmer Lake and Crews. That is where this photo fits in.

On December 11, 1997, a northbound Union Pacific freight powered with all three of the former Rio Grande GP60s stalled on the grade between Colorado Springs and Palmer Lake, on single track, of course! It was eventually decided to push the freight from behind with a following BNSF coal train. The three SD70MACs came through with flying colors, but unfortunately with all of the delays, the sun has already set on this short winter day. In this view, the UP train has just been cut off of the coal train, while in the foreground, a BNSF coal load waits at the approach signal for Palmer Lake and awaits its turn for the single-track.
