This pair of white peacocks putting on a show was the highlight of my visit to Isola Madre on Lake Maggiore, Italy.
The crystal-clear water in Peschiera del Garda often gave you glimpses of large lake fish beneath the surface, where you could sometimes see them sheltering from the hot midday sun beneath moored boats.

a tableau (combination of 3-dimensional statues and wall frescoes by Antonio Busca) depicting the canonization of St.Francis by Pope Gregory IX . All the twenty chapels on the world heritage site of Sacro Monte di Orta in Italy have centuries-old tableaux like this portraying moments in the life of the saint but the one here is probably the grandest of them all as there ambassadors of kings and princes, cardinals and bishops too. Seen through the metal gates of the Chapel No.20, the final chapel in the sequential tour.

Seen from the hills of Arona by Lake Maggiore, the castle of Rocca d'Angera is owned by the wealthy Borromeo family who also own Isola Madre and a large part of Isola Bella on the lake. Stopped here to see the colossus of San Carlo Borromeo (giant bronze statue of St.Charles Borromeo) on the way back to Stresa on Lake Maggiore after the visit to Lake Orta.

Cannobio, a medieval village of cobblestone streets and alleyways on the shores of Lago Maggiore, is one of my favourite destinations in Italy. I have twice enjoyed staying at the Madaschi family’s “Villa Palmira” (a free plug for the owners), located a short stroll from the lake. As in all Italian villages, life starts very early in the day.
