I photographed the dock between Bardolino and Garda, looking out across the calm expanse of Lake Garda. The wooden planks showed signs of age, with two metal ladders descending into the still water. On the left, the thin line of the Sirmione Peninsula stretched into the lake, and the long exposure softened the surface into a milky texture beneath the pastel sky.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses the remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling (or stilt house) settlements in and around the Alps built from around 5000 to 500 B.C.
A view of some of the buildings at Piazza Motta from the space below the townhall of Orta San Giulio on Lake Orta.
Lake Orta was the third Italian lake I visited in May last year after Lakes Como and Maggiore. The little island of Isola San Giulio or St.Julius' Island on the lake is seen here from the hill of Sacro Monte di Orta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site by virtue of its group of old shrines dedicated to St.Francis.
When our tour bus stopped at the carpark in front of the San Carlone statue and church in Arona, these car enthusiasts suddenly arrived with their "chariots", giving us an unexpected photo opportunity.

"I used to be a king. And everything around me turned to gold." - Graham Nash
Well, he is not really a king. Maybe a king of his castle in Sydney. I met Chris years ago in Northern Italy. I think I took this portrait in Lake Garda while we were having dinner. I like how he turned his head and looked away. His hair cut reminded me of a Roman Ceasar. He had the perfect profile for it. Italian nose. A bit of stubble. Years of wrinkles. Sad eyes. What was on his mind? Yea, maybe he used to be a king.
I shot this with my 24-70 mm EF lens on a Canon 5D mk ii. Why is this significant? Because that would be the last time I would haul this camera on travels. It got so heavy for me that it led to my sciata attack. This I will not forget.Photo © 2014 Rob Castro

On the western shore of Lago Maggiore in the medieval part of the village of Cannobio, in northern Italy, is found Via Antonio Giovanola, a moody and highly textured cobblestone laneway.
Caught in the soft light of dawn while the village was still sleeping, is a small piazza with an interesting yellow house below.

Do not disturb ... I am asleep.
Mark was on our tour of Northern Italy. He was not the friendliest guy in our group. But he makes a great photo model. I shot this while he was busy looking at his cell phone. He was probably doing his taxes there. Or perhaps he was indeed asleep.
