Peel's Manx Gaelic name of Purt ny h-Inshey translates literally as 'Port of the Island'. This refers to the small island of St Patrick, on which Peel Castle is built; it is connected to the town by a causeway.

Unlike most English place names on the the Island whose names are a translation or Anglicisation of the Manx Gaelic name, the English name of Peel is of completely different origin and probably referred to a defensive tower, or 'Peel Tower' that was added to the Castle during the period of English rule. The gradual Anglicisation of the Isle of Man saw the name spread to include the town itself.

Pretty sure I've seen these at home.... will research later

The Isle of Man has played a unique and unusual role in the story of two World Wars. It was ‘home’ to thousands of men, women and children who were identified as being ‘enemy aliens’ and potentially dangerous spies and ‘fifth columnists’. During the First World War many of those who were interned had lived in Britain for years and had British families, while many Second World War internees were refugees who had come to Britain as a safe haven from Nazi persecution in Europe. interned artists recorded the world around them in different ways.
