Despite being a desert and a volcanic landscape, Lobos Island has a large number of natural habitats. There are over 130 plant species, including the siempreviva - endemic island-, the Sea Uvilla, or White Caleton which is very attractive because of its shape and color.
Because of its great ecological diversity the site has been designated as a protected zone, the Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos.

Sie wurde 1903 im Leuchtturm von Lobos (Faro de Martiño) als Tochter von Leopoldo Plá and Rafaela Guerra Galvani geboren; ihr genaues Geburtsdatum ist unbekannt, ihr bekanntester Biograph Raúl Amaral gibt den 9. November an. 1926 kam sie in Paraguay an und ließ sich in Villa Aurelia nieder, später zog sie in die Hauptstadt Asunción.
Sie schrieb avantgardistische Poesie, Geschichten, Essays und Theaterstücke und hatte bedeutenden Einfluss auf das intellektuelle Leben in Paraguay. (Quelle s.u.)

In Nederland komt deze vogel niet meer voor.
Het dier heeft een opvouwbare kuif.
De hop is gemakkelijk te herkennen aan het roodbruine verenkleed met een lange zwart gepunte kuif, die kan worden opgezet als de vogel opgewonden is. De staart en de vleugels zijn zwart en getekend met brede witte strepen.
De snavel is lang en dun.
Een opvallende eigenschap is de uitgesproken stank die het dier verspreidt omdat enerzijds het nest nooit wordt schoongemaakt (voedselafval en mest blijven achter) en anderzijds omdat het vrouwtje een klier heeft aan de basis van haar staart, die tijdens de broedtijd een zware stank verspreidt.
Een bijnaam voor de hop is dan ook drekhaan.
De hop is een insectenetende weidevogel.
De roep van de hop klinkt als hoep, hoep, en hoewel het geluid niet luid is, is het toch op grote afstand hoorbaar. De lichaamslengte bedraagt 26 tot 28 cm[2] en het gewicht 75 gram.
Zijn voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit grote insecten, regenwormen, naakt- en huisjesslakken en spinnen, maar ook hagedissen staan op het menu.

Isla de Lobos (Wolf Island), just 2km off the shore of Fuerteventura, got its name after the large number of Sea wolf (also called monk seals) that used to live there in the past, before extensive hunting drove them extinct.

Het bootje had aardig wat (internationaal verplichte) veiligheidsvoorzieningen geinstalleerd. De EPIRB zal bij de voorgeschreven periodieke test net goed bereikbaar zijn.
Als ex-inspecteur van de scheepvaartinspectie liet ik mijn
oog goedkeurend over het passagiersscheepje gaan.
Verrassend volledig uitgerust.
Electronische navigatie middelen en voldoende zwemvesten, drijvende reddingmiddelen, noodradiobaken, radar en communicatiemiddelen.
En dat is in dit zeegebied tussen de hoofdeilanden beslist geen overbodige luxe.
Een scheepje dat ingezet kan worden in heel veel situaties !
El CIUDAD DE SANTANDER varó en 1895, frente a lobos con apenas 12 años de Vida Marítima. Sus viejas máquinas no pudieron contra las corrientes de la zona y la niebla lo que agravó la situación.
El CIUDAD DE SANTANDER no pudo ser salvado. Catorce días de incesantes esfuerzos, trabajando con todos los elementos disponibles no dieron el resultado de poner á flote el espléndido trasatlántico que fuera honra de la marina mercante
española.

On San Cristobel Island we were at Cerro Brujo beach where we observed nesting frigatebirds, blue-footed boodies, oystercatchers a few iguanas and even some nursing sea lions. Unfortunately, I have no underwater camera, so I didn't get any photographs of the many, colorful, tropical fish seen while snorkeling in its clear waters.
Lobos Island belongs to the Canary Islands (Spain) and is located between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
