Parco naturale Isola di Lobos

Lobos Island seen from Paseo Bristol in Corralejo.

The white in the foreground on the beach are rhodoliths that look a lot like popcorn.

On San Cristobel Island we were at Cerro Brujo beach where we observed nesting frigatebirds, blue-footed boodies, oystercatchers a few iguanas and even some nursing sea lions. Unfortunately, I have no underwater camera, so I didn't get any photographs of the many, colorful, tropical fish seen while snorkeling in its clear waters.

Editor's note: Happy Free-for-All Friday! Since I get to post whatever strikes my fancy today (okay, within reason), here's a lovely image from early in 2013, showing the Canary Islands floating like jewels in the night...

This image was taken during Expedition 37 aboard the International Space Station. It shows a night view of the Canary Islands at night. The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa. They are one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities and include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.

Taken from the deck of a catamaran on a beautiful Spring afternoon, with low sun highlighting the island. The island is off the North-eastern point of Fuerteventura opposite Corralejo in the Canary Islands. It has been a nature reserve since 1982 and was originally home to a dense population of seals - "lobos del mar " - sea wolves - hence the name

Isla de Lobos is a largely uninhabited nature reserve just to the north of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, home to many rare sea-birds. There is a small group of traditional houses used by fishermen at the weekend by the small lagoon to the south of the Island

Lobos Island (Spanish: Isla de Lobos, pronounced: [ˈisla de ˈloβos]) is a small island of the Canary Islands (Spain) located just 2 km north of the island of Fuerteventura. Politically it belongs to the municipality of La Oliva on the island of Fuerteventura. It has an area of 4.6 km². It has been a nature reserve without permanent human population since 1982. The island is accessible to tourists via a short ferry ride from Corralejo, in the north of Fuerteventura. It has day facilities and weekend homes of local fishermen. The local lighthouse was automated in 1968.

Fauna and flora

Despite being a desert and a volcanic landscape, Lobos Island has a large number of natural habitats. There are over 130 plant species, including the siempreviva - endemic island-, the Sea Uvilla, or White Caleton which is very attractive because of its shape and color.

Likewise, birds are an important feature of the island: it has a great variety of seabirds that usually nest on cliffs and rocks. Among these species are the Shearwater Cinderella, Little Shearwater and the herring gull. Also in residence are the storm petrel, Bulwer's Petrel and Yellow-legged Gull. In addition to birds a great diversity of fish can be spotted in its waters. Of these abound old fish (Canarian fish), Barracuda, Bream and Striped fish.

Because of its great ecological diversity the site has been designated as a protected zone, the Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos. It has also been declared a special protection area (SPA) for birds.
