“Our Guardian Angels are our most faithful friends, because they are with us day and night, always and everywhere. We ought often to invoke them.”

Quote -John Vianney

HSS and enjoy your Sunday ;-))

Processing one of my own photos.

IF Zeus chose us a King of the flowers in his mirth,

He would call to the rose, and would royally crown it;

For the rose, ho, the rose! is the grace of the earth,

Is the light of the plants that are growing upon it!

For the rose, ho, the rose! is the eye of the flowers,

Is the blush of the meadows that feel themselves fair,—

Is the lightning of beauty, that strikes through the bowers

On pale lovers that sit in the glow unaware.

Ho, the rose breathes of love! ho, the rose lifts the cup

To the red lips of Cypris invoked for a guest!

Ho, the rose having curled its sweet leaves for the world

Takes delight in the motion its petals keep up,

As they laugh to the Wind as it laughs from the west.

Under rich, relentless skies

I've been setting highs

I felt you walk right through me

You're the thing that I invoke

My all persistent goal

Sent to make me crazy

And though it's hard now

With time, it works out

To be human is to love

Even when it gets too much

I'm not ready to give up!

St Etheldreda's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Ely Place, off Charterhouse Street in Holborn, London. The building is one of only two surviving in London from the reign of Edward I, and dates from between 1250-1290. It is dedicated to Æthelthryth, or Etheldreda, the Anglo-Saxon saint who founded the monastery at Ely in 673. It was the chapel of the London residence of the Bishops of Ely.

In the early 17th century it served briefly as an embassy chapel for the Spanish Ambassador, and a haven for English Catholics. The chapel was purchased by the Catholic Church in 1874 and opened in 1878 and is one of the oldest churches in England to be in current use by the Catholic Church.

St Etheldreda's consists of a chapel, or upper church, and a crypt or undercroft and is active and used for Masses, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Because Etheldreda was often invoked for help with infections of the throat, the Blessing of the Throats is held annually at the chapel.

The Catholic chapel at the United States Military Academy, West Point, is modelled on St Etheldreda's

Taipei Botanical Garden (台北植物園), Taipei, Taiwan

During a short visit to Taiwan, I was pleasantly surprised to see this lone male at Taipei Botanical Garden. This species is rarely seen at sea level. Its natural habitat is at higher altitudes. As can be imagined, its sighting attracted hundreds of birders to the Garden. It also invoked territorial aggression from another lone male of a different species, White-rumped Shama, also rarely seen and shown in the previous picture. With both birds liking the same tree, the Vivid Niltava was often chased away by the White-rumped Shama and only returned to feed when the latter was elsewhere.

On the "Middelbuurt", the most densely populated residential mound of the former island of Schokland is a little church where the islanders, engaged in a fierce struggle for existance and the battle against the water, also invoked heavenly powers.

This little church in an austere neoclassical style dates from 1834 and was paid for by the State.

A stone church stood on the same site from 1717, which was irreparably damaged in the storm disaster of 1825 and for which this church was built.

The little church and its adjacent presbytery is the only building remaining on this residential mound of the former island of Schokland after the evacuation of the island in 1859.

Both the church, presbytery and the residential mound were protected from the vagaries of the former "Zuiderzee" by a heavy wooden palisade and a piece of dike made of basalt stones.

The wooden building on the left is a replica of the ice-fleet barn that took its place as the shelter of the ice-fleet that was vital in harsh winters.

This was a boat under which liders were attached so that it could be pulled across the ice like a sled........

This Sanskrit mantra invokes Goddess Saraswati, the powerful Hindu embodiment of Shakti energy in the form of creativity, language, wisdom, knowledge, art and music.

In 1582 the Abbey was purchased by Sir Francis Drake, who set about a rebuilding programme, which, local tradition claims, took a mere three nights to complete because he invoked the assistance of the devil!

Thank you so much my dear friends for your support and for your faves and kind comments, greatly appreciated! Have a nice day!

Taken quiet a long time ago but after sitting in my archives for months it has stood the test of time and I still like it. I thought it was a good image to share for St. Patty's Day with all of the green and I also thought it's a good image for invoking hope! I was down on my knees for this one and I used my "live view" ability to be able to get this perspective. Have a wonderful day and drink a pint for me!

To me this invoked a feeling of nostalgia, in a positive way. The world that "was", and hopefully will be again soon.

These are all Bodhidharma says, not me.

And the title is Confucius says, also not I say.

I am just a ordinary and a little somewhat boring person:)))

The rock formations, scrub brush, cactus, and gnarled pinion pine and juniper trees of the Southwest United States invoke the spirit of the pre-historic continent that we call North America moreso than nearly anywhere else.

There are vast expanses of scant population, and even in tourist areas like Sedona, the nature takes precedence. When I looked at this image in color, it was nice, but when I converted it to monochrome, it drew out that spirit for me.

Do you agree?

“The Great Translation Movement” : twitter.com/tgtm_official

This is a group of young Chinese people who risked their lives to set up their own website for Chinese instant brainwashing news translating from Chinese to English, they have all been banned in the Chinese sphere of influence, they are often threatened by the officials, one volunteer translator has disappeared for many days.

An online anti-war movement launched during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. It seeks to expose pro-Russian, anti-American, anti-Japanese, anti-Western, and racially discriminatory sentiments in China by translating government propaganda and anti-western public opinion found on the Chinese internet into other languages, including English, Japanese, and Korean. Through such a movement, the participants aim to invoke the conscience of the Chinese People.

I hope that western friends pay more attention to them.🙏

The Hunter

~Edgar Albert Guest~

Cheek that is tanned to the wind of the north.

Body that jests at the bite of the cold,

Limbs that are eager and strong to go forth

Into the wilds and the ways of the bold;

Red blood that pulses and throbs in the veins,

Ears that love silences better than noise;

Strength of the forest and health of the plains;

These the rewards that the hunter enjoys.

Forests were ever the cradles of men;

Manhood is born of a kinship with trees.

Whence shall come brave hearts and stout muscles, when

Woods have made way for our cities of ease?

Oh, do you wonder that stalwarts return

Yearly to hark to the whispering oaks?

'Tis for the brave days of old that they yearn:

These are the splendors the hunter invokes.

The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia, known simply as the Sagrada Familia, is a Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona, Spain, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Begun in 1882, it is still under construction (November 2016). It is Gaudí's masterpiece and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture.

The Sagrada Familia is a reflection of Gaudí's artistic plenitude: he worked on it for most of his professional career, but especially in his later years, where he reached the culmination of his naturalistic style, synthesizing all the solutions and styles he had tried up to that point. Gaudí achieved perfect harmony in the interrelationship between structural and ornamental elements, between plasticity and aesthetics, between function and form, between content and container, achieving the integration of all the arts into a structured and logical whole. The Sagrada Familia has a Latin cross plan, five central naves, a three-aisled transept, and an apse with seven chapels. It boasts three façades dedicated to the Birth, Passion, and Glory of Jesus. When completed, it will have 18 towers: four at each portal, making a total of twelve for the apostles, four over the transept invoking the evangelists, one over the apse dedicated to the Virgin, and the central dome tower in honor of Jesus, which will reach 172.5 meters in height. The temple will have two sacristies next to the apse and three large chapels: the Assumption Chapel in the apse and the Baptism and Penance Chapels next to the main façade. It will also be surrounded by a cloister designed for processions and to isolate the temple from the exterior. Gaudí applied a highly symbolic content to the Sagrada Familia, both in architecture and sculpture, dedicating each part of the temple to a religious significance.

The hermitage of Sant Roc is a temple that has been documented since the second half of the 14th century, at that time under the advocation of Sant Sebastià. Tradition says that it was built as a thank you to the saint for having protected the population from a plague epidemic. In 1768 the original building was renovated and expanded and its advocation changed. At that time, according to most authors, the cult of Sant Roc began. He is usually invoked against epidemics and plagues, especially against the bubonic plague. He shares this invocation with Sant Sebastià. It is said that in 1645 in the church of Frascati in the midst of a pandemic, a magnificent fresco appeared on one of its walls with the representation of the two saints; it is said that the plague disappeared.

From the Hammer Museum website: Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972, Osaka) is a Berlin-based artist whose installations, sculpture, and performance art invoke psychogeographic spaces of memory, emotions, and the cyclical nature of life and death. Using red, black, or white yarn as a base material, Shiota often creates meticulously webbed environments that span the length of entire galleries and mimic organic forms such as cobwebs, veins, and fractals. Shiota also includes a range of found objects in her work such as wooden chairs, abandoned shoes, rusted keys, and used dresses as a strategy to implicate the viewer in the artist's personal narratives that are often universal experiences.

Shiota will be the inaugural artist featured in the Hammer’s redesigned lobby and will envelop the area with a unique and visceral installation.

Italia, Toscana, Borgo a Mozzano (LU), Autunno 2014

Ponte della Maddalena is a bridge crossing the Serchio river near the town of Borgo a Mozzano (Lucca). It is one of numerous medieval bridges known as the "Bridge of the Devil" and it was a vital river crossing on the Via Francigena, an early medieval road to Rome for pilgrims. Its slender design, still impresses the viewer, used to be certainly more peculiar in the past. According to a popular legend a master mason begun its building but soon noticed that he would not be able to complete the work for the fixed day and frightened of the possible consequences invoked to the Devil asking him help. The Devil accepted to complete the bridge in a night in change of the first soul that would have crossed it. The contract was signed but the constructor, full of remorse, confessed himself with a priest that advised him to let cross the bridge for first to a pig. So the Devil was defeated and he disappeared in the deepness of the river.

The Valley of the Gods is similar in appearance to the much better known and more touristically developed Monument Valley and has comparable sandstone towers and sea stacks.

According to Navajo mythology, the rock formations are places of strength where ancestral spirits dwell, especially in the Valley of the Gods. The distinctive sandstone towers are petrified warriors of the tribe who can be invoked for personal protection. They represent bodyguards whose power and strength accompanies the young men on their way to war.

from poet william stafford:

"be a person here. stand by the river, invoke the owls. invoke winter, then spring. let any season that wants to come here make its own call. after that sound goes away, wait... how you stand here is important. how you listen for the next things to happen. how you breathe."

Souls for Belial - MARDUK

-

Sweet torrents of Death

Oh engulfing ruin

Every fall is a soul

For Belial

In sinless guilt rushing

Blasts of yokeless glory

To and fro - Red ascension

Collecting souls

For Belial

For Belial

And as our voice uncovers

Another soul to the stream

Another soul devoured

For Belial

Oh lawless angel we approach thee

In the form of proudest shame

We thy children - here assembled

Now thy promised blessing claim

Promised blessing claim

Lord of arrogance - lord of pride

Fling thy unrestrained nets thrice

And let the rivers of the under world

Swiftly to the surface rise

Oh spirit of darkness we invoke thee

In the name of all things depraved

We thy servants - here forgathered

Now thy promised blessing claim

Promised blessing claim

Sweet torrents of death

Oh engulfing ruin

Every fall is a soul

For Belial

For Belial

For Belial

Angels of sweed

Ever rising decline

Every slip is a soul

For Belial

For Belial

For Belial

In sinless guilt rushing

Blasts of yokeless glory

To and fro - Red ascension

Collecting souls

For Belial

For Belial

And as our voice uncovers

Another soul to the stream

Another soul devoured

For Belial

This door gives access to the Oda Chapel, dedicated to Saint Oda and Saint Appolonia. The chapel owes its name to these saints. According to tradition, after many wanderings on the run from her father, Oda would eventually have arrived in Boshoven, where her stay was betrayed by a magpie, after which she would have gone to Sint-Oedenrode. Oda is invoked against eye diseases. Apollonia is invoked against toothaches (though I would advise you to go to docter...).

The chapel was restored in the 1980s and is now a national monument. The chapel is open on weekends for visitors and reflection. Masses are celebrated in February, May and November. The chapel can also be reserved for wedding masses, baptisms and other celebrations.

The big open space on the left is a little uncomfortable to me, I want to add text or something. But I thought about that and wondered if it might be better to leave it blank. Allow space to wander and wonder why is there a big space there and why do I feel like I need to fill it?

Maybe I just need to slow down and rest some more in thought and perhaps invoke some conscious dreaming. While I stare, the spider web grabs my attention and leads me back to the wide open space. I notice the gap between my thoughts and breathe out deeply. My shoulders drop as unconscious tension subsides.

The punctum points to those features of a photograph that seem to produce or convey a meaning without invoking any recognizable symbolic system. This kind of meaning is unique to the response of the individual viewer of the image. The punctum punctuates the studium and as a result pierces its viewer. To allow the punctum effect, the viewer must repudiate all knowledge. Barthes insists that the punctum is not simply the sum of desires projected into the photograph. Instead, it arises from details that are unintended or uncontrolled by the photographer. Source Museum of educatuion.
