The birthday letter of
Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina, discovered at the Vindolanda Roman fort (Tablet 291, dating roughly 97–103 CE), is a significant historical document because it is considered the earliest surviving example of Latin written by a woman. The tablet is written in ink on wood, with the main body in a professional script and a personal postscript by Claudia herself.

Cl(audia) Seuerá Lepidinae [suae] salu[t]em, soror, ad dieṃ iii Idus Septembr[e]s sollemnem naṭalem meum rogó libenter faciás ut uenias ad nos, iucundiorem mihi [diem] interuentú tuo facturá si [ad]e[s]. Cerial[em t]uum salutá. Aelius meus [et f]iliolụs s[al]utant.
