Fourth-grade inventors are knee-deep in Invention Convention preparations. A recent student-parent workday brought inventions several steps closer to finalization. Here is a sneak peek of the work that is going into these inventions. They will be on display at the Invention Convention on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013.

One of the greatest inventions was the electric light. It opened up a whole new world for people in the late 1800's, so it's been around a very long time. We attribute the "practical" light bulb to Thomas Edison.

Week 4 of the K-Pop Academy saw the students discover about Hangeul and the Korean langugae.
Linguists from the across the world have praised Hangeul for its advanced alphabet and ease of learning. As a language it is both scientific and creative and from 2013 the beauty of Hangeul will be celebrated with a commemorative day marking the invention and the proclamation of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong the Great.
This National Holiday in Korea, Hangul Proclamation Day (9th October) celebrates the value and importance of Hangeul.

Partnering with the Danish Museum of Science and Technology, InfinIT, a Danish network for innovative utilization of IT, Cotter (Laser Cutting Services) and VRKSTEDET (Underbroen) we created a Bits & Beers to kickstart our newest venture - a series of workshops called "From Old Patents to New Prototypes".
Our theme was 'crazy inventions that can change the world' and our speakers included some very special people who have contributed to our world!
Some of the people joining us included:
Jesper Vind, CEO at Future Electric
The company makes state-of-the-art electric motorcycles, with increased maneuverability and acceleration.

Fourth-grade students displayed their engineering skills during the annual Westminster Invention Convention held on Feb. 21 in the Lower School gym. The event was part of National Engineer’s Week.
Westminster has hosted the Invention Convention for more than 16 years, with fourth-grade teacher Kathy Buurma having organized each event. After learning about famous inventors, the students are tasked with determining a problem for which they would like to find a solution. The students work on the invention in class, and parents are invited to attend class to assist with construction. Four adults outside of the student’s immediate family test each invention before it is submitted for judging. The judges consider the reviews of the testers and the marketing of the invention in addition to the invention itself. Inventions this year include an extreme laptop case, a cat bed and breakfast and a lighted sweater for dogs.

Round one of my invention for nancy. Please excuse the ugly black fabric- that's all I had at the moment that was black. Once I get the design right, it'll all be made out of sweatshirt knit. See my "large format camera" there? And see how I'm wearing a hoodie with a hood so big that it doubles as the little fabric that you need to drape over your head? voila: my invention for nancy. It keeps her warm and helps her see the image all in one. It needs a catchy lil name though....Any suggestions?
CA Dance Company performs "The Invention of Morel" by Adolfo Bioy Casares. For the work the Company, directed by Richard Colton, has been collaborating this year with the CA Science Program's John Pickle and Max Hall, and CA's engineering club, The Demons. The dancers, a cast of fifteen, will interplay with an original film created for "Morel," by CA Film teacher Justin Bull and music by contemporary composers Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington. The dance's scenario is by Jared Green and set and light design by Ian Hannan.
Kilburn Tube Mural, Kilburn High Road.
"Mother of Invention is the silent narrator of the mural. Represented pushing a modern day 3-wheeled pram (in reference to development at Tricycle Theatre), she pervades time and race, representing the hopes and dreams of those who enter the big city, as well as the expectations of those who leave it seeking peace and tranquillity. Walking through landscapes both past, present and future, she rouses past memories and new beginnings."
