This series captures the introspective minds of young academic women—readers, thinkers, seekers. St Columba Church of Scotland, Downing Street, Cambridge

 

Introspective and unimposing, the 1891 work of J McVicar Anderson. Rather cowed on its site now by the height of the more modern buildings opposite. Although part of the United Reformed Church it retains its Church of Scotland identity by being their chaplaincy to the University of Cambridge. The little St Columba chapel is open everyday, and worth seeing for being the only chapel i have ever come across which is focused on a fire place.

An elderly lady in her introspective trance!

 

All roads led to Haridwar : An ocean of humanity -15 million - descending for a single day dip in the Ganges on the April 14 (New Year day for many). It is considered to be a journey for redemption in life - the Mahakumbh' @ Haridwar. I was told during interactions that just like going to Haj (Mecca), most save everything to make this journey of their lives. I noticed people walking hundreds of miles (mostly elderly) for those 10 minutes of dip with the mother – Holy Ganges - and a few minutes of solitude even in the midst of the human ocean. It was a profound revelation for me. I went through my own internal journey. Certainly a journey of life-time!

Tomb of Alfred Hope Patten, priest, 1885-1958 best known for his restoration of the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.

An introspective only child, he became an Anglo-Catholic in Brighton whilst still a teenager, He became interested in not only the medieval church but also the religious life, visiting the Anglican Benedictines at Painsthorpe in 1906 and being profoundly influenced by their abbot Aelred Carlyle.

After attending Lichfield Theological College he was ordained deacon in 1913 at Holy Cross Church in the St Pancras area. After 3 other curacies, including the Good Shepherd church, Carshalton, in 1921 he became vicar of Great and Little Walsingham with St Giles' Houghton. Within months of arriving he had a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham modelled on the medieval priory's seal and placed it in the parish's main church, St Mary's. He also started Marian devotions in his church and - aided by the League of Our Lady (later the Society of Mary) - the first pilgrimages from London. His bishop opposed the statue and he agreed to move it out of the church in 1931, using this as a chance to rebuild the Holy House here, which was rebuilt in 1938 to accommodate rising pilgrim numbers. I competed in this race Saturday, the Lenape Survival Challenge. A 4.5 mile team hill run, with a run up a ski slope, that ends in a 2 or so mile canoe.

 

It was an amazing event. The weather was sunny and mild, it was the perfect morning.

 

My only expectation for the race was to run the entire course, every hill, and finish with my partner. My partner didn't want to be last and insisted we have tons of fun.

 

So I was thinking while running up those hills how much life has changed in the last year. How many risks I take because it's the risk that is worth everything, not really what comes after the risk.

 

Like how competing isn't about how well you do, or what you win, but the fact that you have the ability and choice to actually do it, so you should take the risk and try.

 

That's the reward. Getting up and doing it.

 

I don't know how many people see this. I have conversations with people who don't do things unless the outcome is guaranteed.

 

Seems like you'd miss out on a lot if this were the only avenue.

The Mentor

Ok, so here's the thing. Jeremy helped me with another shot that'll be released later this week. For some reason though, I felt like this shot had something to it. I liked the look in his face, and the way that you kind of has this badass introspective look to him. What do you think?

About 15 years ago I went on a gratitude finding introspective therapy (naikan 内観) retreat for a week where I considered all the things that I should be grateful for. My gratitude towards my wife and mother were of course immense, but I was a little surprised to find that I had till then forgotten many of the things that my father had done for me, including the purchase of a wonderful, winged, Bonito dinghy. My parents would take me to a gravel pit lake not far from our house in Swindon and watch me capsize the Bonito. I enjoyed getting out on the wings as near as possible to, and often beyond, the limit of sail force that my young teenage body could stabilize. This training in living dangerously (when on water, and there is little to bump into) may I think have served me well as a life lesson which, in my dotage, I wish to give to my son. Hence the Yamaha Mini Hopper on the roof of our Noah minivan. Ray is a bit too young for a winged dinghy but perhaps he will use and enjoy this mini Lazer-like dinghy. I look forward to having a go myself.

 

Is it like riding a bicycle, or does one forget how to do it? I shall see.

One of my oldest and closest friends - CGI effects supervisor Mr Atrocity, as he's known round these parts.

 

Taken Donkey's years ago when I was still assisting (about 8 years if I remember rightly) One of the photographer's I used to work for had carelessly left his 10x8" camera at my house for the weekend, and it was too good an opportunity to miss. If memory serves me rightly it was a Linhof, and it would have been a 150mm lens.

 

this is actually a scan from a 10x8" b/w polaroid, as I'd been carefully stockpiling leftovers for years. At £15 a shot, its worth saving the scraps after every shoot!

 

It's lit very simply, with 1 bowens 500 head top left through a 60/60cm softbox. The softbox is so close to Andrew that you can watch inverse square law happening all the way down the photo - isn't physics brilliant!

Keanu Charles Reeves was born in 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. His first name means ‘cool breeze over the mountains’ in Hawaiian. His father, Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., was a geologist of Chinese-Hawaiian heritage, and his mother, Patricia Bond (née Taylor), was a British showgirl and later a costume designer for rock stars such as Alice Cooper. Reeves's mother was working in Beirut when she met his father. Upon his parents’ split in 1966, Keanu moved with his mother and younger sister Kim Reeves to Sydney, to New York and then to Toronto. As a child, he lived with various stepfathers, including stage and film director Paul Aaron. Keanu developed an ardour for hockey, though he would eventually turn to acting. At 15, he played Mercutio in a stage production of 'Romeo and Juliet' at the Leah Posluns Theatre. Reeves dropped out of high school when he was 17. His film debut was the Canadian feature One Step Away (Robert Fortier, 1985). After a part in the teen movie Youngblood (Peter Markle, 1986), starring Rob Lowe, he obtained a green card through stepfather Paul Aaron and moved to Los Angeles. He played an abusive man in the supernatural thriller The Gift (Sam Raimi, 2000), starring Cate Blanchett, a smitten doctor in the romantic comedy Something’s Gotta Give (Nancy Meyers, 2003) opposite Diane Keaton, and a Brit demon hunter in the American-German occult detective film Constantine (Francis Lawrence, 2005). His appearance in the animated Science Fiction thriller A Scanner Darkly (Richard Linklater, 2006), based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, received favourable reviews, and The Lake House (Alejandro Agresti, 2006), his romantic outing with Sandra Bullock, was a success at the box office. In January 2000, Reeves's girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, gave birth eight months into her pregnancy to Ava Archer Syme-Reeves, who was stillborn. The strain put on their relationship by their grief resulted in Reeves and Syme's breakup several weeks later. In 2001, Syme died after a car accident.

I am always a little introspective during the time around New Year's day. Thinking back about the last year - what I did, what I didn't do, things I wanted to do but didn't get done. I'm always a little despondent but at the same time excited for what the year ahead holds. Therefore, take the following with a grain of salt - and realize that it might be the remnants of a late night last night...

 

For the past two years I've tried to instead of set a New Year's resolution, claim each year as "The Year of ____". Two years ago I claimed that year as the Year of Truth. I tried to be as truthful to myself and the people around me as I could. It was remarkably tough. Maybe that just says how much I fool myself into thinking certain things that aren't actually true. I told my family how I felt about things instead of keeping it inside. In the same vein, they were more truthful to me and that was good. Because there were things I needed to hear from them that I hadn't before - both positive and negative. Overall, this was a spectacular experience and one which I would suggest to everyone.

 

Last year (2011), however, coming off that great experience I was actually a little nervous and therefore last year ended up being "The Year of Nothing". Which really meant it was pretty much the "Year of Everything." Or maybe it was the year of people-pleasing manic guilt-driven over activity. Maybe I too easily fault myself, but many of the images I make I think right afterwards - "hmmm that will probably be well received by flickr people" or "my in-laws will really like that picture of my daughter." And while I think there is a place for some of that in photography, it wasn't my original impetus behind taking up photography. Originally, I wanted photography to be my release from these kind of thoughts - as these things dominate the rest of my life too. So instead, my photography was invaded and I ended up feeling that I "needed" to go make photographs when my soul would have been better nourished by staying home and reading a good book or writing some thoughts down in my journal or just mending to things around the house. All that just to get a couple "favs" or a comment or two. Somehow those pats on the back had replaced the true impetus for making photographs; I had traded my true freedom of expression for a couple "attaboys."

 

For those of you who have commented regularly on my photographs - I truly have appreciated your input. All I'm trying (rather badly I guess) to say is that while I appreciate your input, I guess in the next year I want to express myself through my photographs (and the words that accompany them) more deeply and completely without trying to win your affection. I hope you continue to comment and fav and just glimpse at my photographs from time to time. I hope they say something to you and if they do, I would love it if you tell me about it. In the same vein though - if they don't say anything to you, if they are bland, boring and dull - I hope you tell me that too. Sometimes - I will probably agree with you. If the words I write are lifeless and without any true meaning (as these today might be) I need those kind of comments too. Honesty, is as they say, the best policy. Don't be mean - just be honest and help me grow as a photographer. That's what I truly seek. I struggle to often find my voice amidst the huge number of spectacular photographers here on flickr. I copy your visions and make them my own in a way that doesn't do either of us justice. Help me find my own voice through the good photographs and the bad.

 

Or just tell me when to shut up and get more sleep... :)

In the middle of nowhere, on a huge pile of dirt.

Miss Brooklyn’s demeanor could not be more different. Her expression is gracious, introspective and calm; she is surrounded by a church spire (Brooklyn to this day counts more houses of worship than any other borough); a lyre and a child with a book (a reference to the borough’s patronage of culture and education). The book on the child’s lap is massive. It must be a Bible, another reference to the borough’s spiritual thrust. Her head is adorned with a laurel wreath. In her hands she holds a tablet with the Dutch inscription “Ein Drach Mackt Maght” (“In Union there is strength”), a hint at the Dutch origins of Brooklyn and at the fairly recent New York City consolidation of 1898.

The Brooklyn gateway to the bridge was markedly more modest. It featured two white granite pylons, each guarded by allegorical female figures known as “Miss Manhattan” and “Miss Brooklyn” installed in 1916. The sculptor responsible for them was none other than Daniel Chester French, best known for his statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

 

“Miss Manhattan” and “Miss Brooklyn” each weigh 20 tons, measure 12 feet tall and are made of granite, and the same model was used for both figures. This is where the similarities end.

Is it wrong to be happy at Pripyat? I actually was quite sad - very introspective. You visit a ghost town in the USA, and it's interesting. But this made me sad.

 

Yes, I'm at the famous ferris wheel in Pripyat, the town that was built for the workers of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Pripyat is the big ghost town you see in photos and videos - Chornobyl is actuall a village a ways away from the plant, and is still inhabited. Pripyat was built as a then oh-so-modern city, with every convenience, and was still growing when the accident happened in 1986. This amusement park, like the sports stadium, was never used before the evacuation - it wasn't quite finished. The park was for May Day celebrations. Not as much radiation here as elsewhere - see other photos for info.

 

Note fabulous Henderson County Colonels t-shirt. Yeah, I got high school spirit in nuclear exclusion zones! Come on, Colonels, beat those Springfield Isotopes!

Tomb of Alfred Hope Patten, priest, 1885-1958 best known for his restoration of the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.

An introspective only child, he became an Anglo-Catholic in Brighton whilst still a teenager, He became interested in not only the medieval church but also the religious life, visiting the Anglican Benedictines at Painsthorpe in 1906 and being profoundly influenced by their abbot Aelred Carlyle.

After attending Lichfield Theological College he was ordained deacon in 1913 at Holy Cross Church in the St Pancras area. After 3 other curacies, including the Good Shepherd church, Carshalton, in 1921 he became vicar of Great and Little Walsingham with St Giles' Houghton. Within months of arriving he had a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham modelled on the medieval priory's seal and placed it in the parish's main church, St Mary's. He also started Marian devotions in his church and - aided by the League of Our Lady (later the Society of Mary) - the first pilgrimages from London. His bishop opposed the statue and he agreed to move it out of the church in 1931, using this as a chance to rebuild the Holy House here, which was rebuilt in 1938 to accommodate rising pilgrim numbers.
