David Bestué produced a new installation in the form of a sculptural timeline defined by ignition and invention, fat and oil, obsolescence, fluorescence, luminescence and incandescence – a history of humanity from antiquity to the present day told through the evolution and refinement of lighting technology. Located in the domestic setting of the former Director’s house within the 1920s Cosme Toda ceramics factory, the installation was companioned by sculptural clusters recuperating Art Nouveau ceramics and plaster pieces found in the factory itself. These linked to Bestué's ongoing interest in the evolution of architectural practice alongside building materials and engineering techniques.

‘Composiciones’ is a a programme of five interventions specially commissioned for the first Barcelona Gallery Weekend, 1–4 October 2015. The programme complimented the existing calendar of exhibitions by presenting the work of artists active in the Barcelona art scene whose interventions responded to singular locations – public and private sites significant for their architecture, activity or their history.
‘Composiciones’ unfolded through temporary interventions at different speeds and rhythms and one-off events outside of Barcelona's contemporary art circuit – including a private psychoanalytic library, a former ceramics factory and a botanical collection. Pinpointing some lesser-known aspects of the city's cultural history and municipal life, ‘Composiciones’ offered moments of interruption, intimacy and immersion throughout the weekend.
Projects by David Bestué (at the Factory complex Cosme Toda, L'Hospitalet); Dora García (at the Biblioteca del Campo Freudiano); Jordi Mitjà (at the Museu Geològic del Seminari de Barcelona); Rasmus Nilausen in collaboration with Pere Llobera (at the gardens of La Central bookstore, Raval); and Daniel Steegmann Magrané (at the Umbracle, Parc de la Ciutadella).

Join us Thursday, January 10 from 5-7pm for the opening reception of "Intervention." Located in the Cohen Commons, this exhibition continues until January 24, 2019.
The term intervention is defined as the “act or process of intervening.” As a starting point, this definition situates a series of recent works undertaken by the students in Professor Kim Moodie’s Advanced Drawing class.
This exhibition subsequently focuses on landscapes and urban spaces, where human interventions are present. These drawings point towards this mediation subtly, by representing not the actors themselves, but the marks they have left behind. Objects and infrastructures haunt pictorial renderings, illuminating the impact of these alterations and questioning the ethical implications of these constructs.

A woman access water anytime in her own compound, rather than walking 3 kilometres to fetch water daily. This was made possible by a joint effort of UNICEF and the Government of Ethiopia, with support from the German Development Bank (KfW) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The intervention included creating a new borehole (122 metres deep) which pumps water into town reservoirs, which then feed water points or household taps. The spectrum of Interventional Radiology includes pain management, peripheral vascular disease, men’s & woman’s health, cancer and stoke management. An interventional radiologist provides emergency care like controlling internal bleeder (Embolization) and also electively increasing flow to a non-healing ulcer on foot (Angioplasty). An Interventional Radiologist works in close association with other care providers to provide an integrated care, and adds significantly to the armamentarium especially when the options are significantly limited.

KATHY SLOANE - Gardens, Garages and Garbage Cans
Physician by day and artist by night, JETSONORAMA will create a location-specific artwork in collaboration/ assistance with Random Parts' artist, Colleen Flaherty in the East Lake neighborhood of Oakland, California. His intervention will be installed on a wall facing the Random Parts gallery and will become a permanent public artwork on the corner of 13th Avenue and East 12th St. in Oakland.
In Gardens, Garages and Garbage Cans, Sloane extends the traditional notion of portraiture to make a different kind of picture in her own neighborhood. She photographs gardens in makeshift pots and containers in front of old Victorian buildings and small apartment houses as well as inside auto body garages that proliferate in an area just east of Lake Merritt; a locale known for its vibrant diversity of immigrants and bustling small businesses. Its a neighborhood that on the surface appears shabby, but Sloane with this series of photographs, captures the beauty and spirit of a community. She gives the viewer a glimpse into a world that at first glance is a gritty concrete jungle but whose inhabitants see beauty in the unexpected and banal. In the words of the artist, these are photographs of gardens that proclaim “someone lives here, works there, who loves life and values beauty.”

Increasingly we are surrounded by mediated objects and environments that are a direct result of the virtual processes that have been used to create them Eroded into its distinctive form by the action of millions of years of sun, wind and rain on the high veldt of South Africa, the found dolomitic boulder that this work is made from bears the exquisite traces of its formation. Continuing this process of erosion, the minimal act of carving two perfectly flat intersecting planes by hand into the stone results in a paradoxical object, part raw geology, part human intervention The two planes are covered in a constellation of concavities that are an expansion of marks made with a hammer and punch during an attempt to articulate a grid of points with eyes closed, that act as a memory of the analogue process with which the work has been made and at the same time allude to the stipple and cuppule marks that are a feature of early human rock engraving Made on residency in the UNESCO designated Cradle of Humankind from the material that gives this culturally momentous landscape it’s unique form, Changing My Mind explores the idea that consciousness is situated simultaneously in the brain, the body, and out into the world through physical engagement with the stuff of reality, as a reciprocal process."

Tolosa Market was the place chosen for the Piazza artistic interventions. There was some nice interaction with both the clients and the merchants!
Toronto's Brick Works in the Don Valley is an interesting development having been an old brick foundry. Today, it serves a number of different purposes. The old chimney and the newly adorned wall, with the various pieces of both old remnants, along with new interventions are interesting.
Cafe Belong, by Chef Brad Long, is a nice place for lunch, or dinner.
Rapid intervention foam vehicle for Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines, Luanshya. The Unimog had a drop-down ramp on its offside (not visible) for a "Fireball" trolley-type premix foam unit. Picture taken early 1984 near Merryweather factory, Rassau, Ebbw Vale, S. Wales just before closure.
There is the very odd story of how the factory closed. Siebe Gorman took over Merryweather and stripped the factory over a weekend and removed key contents to another plant, despite Welsh government having injected loads of grant aid for the move from Greenwich to a deprived area. Workers turned up on Monday and the factory was closed without their knowledge. Much reported in the press.
I am very grateful to contributor Neil Bennett for permission to publish what must be an extremely rare combination of chassis and bodybuilder right at the end of the Merryweather era.
Banksy is the most famous graffiti artist in London, though he practices many forms of subversive art and his graffiti is unconventional. His extensive use of stencils allows him more precision and speed in deploying his tags. Graffiti is by nature intervention, but Banksy is very good at taking cues from the city environment, changing or adding to signage or common urban objects, etc. He created an official-looking stencil showing the seal of the City of London and the text 'Designated Graffiti Wall', and sprayed it on blank walls throughout London. Other taggers quickly took the cue, and the city had to post police at these locations. He also sneaks small paintings (that he has reworked to criticize the art world and politics) into major museums and stuck them in blank spaces on the wall with double stiick tape. Some of the painting stay up for a while before anyone notices that something is amiss.
