After spending the last 30 years commuting on Interstate 5 both in Southern California and Seattle (usually 5 lanes both ways jammed with cars) I’m appreciating the traffic back home here in Montana. The only traffic I saw on this road were a few whitetail deer…although I will say that they’re just as likely to cut in front of you as the drivers on I-5…
Here's a pic from I-5 for comparison! flic.kr/p/22Efv6b
Interstate 90 (I-90) is a transcontinental freeway, and the longest Interstate Highway in the United States at 4,861.09 km. Its western terminus is in Seattle, and its eastern terminus is in Boston, at Route 1A near Logan International Airport. There is no point worth mentioning between Vantage Bridge and Spokane, which it enters 229 km later.
There is a exit near Quinton siding on Oregon Interstate 84 that is a nice spot for a hit and run photo of a train running on Union Pacific. At 122 miles from downtown Portland, it was a great place to wait for a westbound to chase home after a day spent railfanning in the Columbia River Gorge. Since the exit was for Phillipi Canyon Road, we gave the site the generic name of "Phillipi."
Late on the Sunday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend 1990, we caught a westman at Phillipi with an interesting set of motive power. This was one of the only decent shots I ever got of a UP C30-7 leading a train. At the time, it was moderately amazing to get four different locomotive models on a UP train.
Iowa Interstate's mostly daily transfer to the CPKC at West Davenport pulls in the yard with a pair of SD38-2's and three cars for delivery. They'll end up pulling over 30 cars, putting the EMD's to work on the return trip.

Iowa Interstate uses their Jordan Spreader to work the south side ditch along the mainline between Silvis and Carbon Cliff, IL.
IAIS 714 piloted the train due to the lengthy deadhead from Silvis to Bureau after this work was done.

I went to a Route 66 car show this past Sunday in the neighboring town of Towanda. Route 66 is an historic route that connected Chicago to L.A. and there is a little chunk of it that runs a few miles from my town. 66 is more of an historic route now days as the interstate system is the new path of choice. But for fans of nostalgia, Americana, and classic cars, 66 lives on and gives travelers and enthusiasts blasts from the past. On this day, classic cars lined up on the old stretch of 66 and showed off to a welcoming crowd. I just loved the paint job on this one.
Interstate 17 is a north–south Interstate Highway located entirely within the U.S. state of Arizona. I-17 has the unusual distinction of starting at approximately milepost 194 instead of at milepost zero. This is a holdover from Arizona's old system of marking mileposts, where a branching route would continue the milepost numbering of its original host, instead of starting over at zero.

I covered territory in four states to get this shot. The Interstate Railroad "heritage" ES44AC was assigned to bring an empty hopper train out of Roanoke and eventually to the Monongahela coal fields in Western Pennsylvania.
The "Creamsicle" remains my favorite of the heritage fleet.

Iowa Interstate's new 30th anniversary heritage units holds up at Western Ave in Blue Island, IL waiting for a IHB switch job to get out of the way before continuing to shove into Blue Island yard. With it's bright red and yellow paint many have been comparing this unit to a McDonald's advertisement!
Wonderful symbolism...
All the clouds on the left hand side are pointing to the sign for a Native American reservation casino.
This shot surprised me! It was one of a series. The cloud structure remained exactly the same before and after we passed the sign. 😊

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge is a seven-lane, single-deck cantilever bridge that carries Interstate 65 across the Ohio River, connecting Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana. The main span is 700 feet (two spans) and the bridge has a total length of 2,498 feet. Construction on the bridge began in the spring of 1961 and was completed in late 1963 at a cost of $10 million. The span had yet to be named when U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Four days later, Kentucky Governor Bert T. Combs announced that there was wide agreement that the bridge would be named in Kennedy's honor.
In the background, you can also see the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge. It is a cantilevered through truss bridge on US 31.
I took this image on the Kentucky side looking North toward the Indiana side. It is an HDR generated from three photos that were bracketed at two stops each on the under and over exposed photos.
This is technically not on the interstate, but an access road that turns into the northbound on-ramp. I feel like a sign with a straight arrow being added would make far more sense than this. Sure makes for one odd sight though!

This is off of I-90 in Gillette, Wyoming, but the same development pattern exists around freeway exits all over the country.
This was taken off of one of only two exits along the six mile stretch of this bypass interstate in Ohio. I-470 serves as a bypass of downtown Wheeling, WV and is the only three digit interstate that runs through West Virginia.

Interstate 5 heading south into Downtown San Diego, California taken from the 16th floor meeting room at the Holiday Inn Downtown. It looks worse than it was. Traffic was not stopped - just moving slowly.

Here was a real surprise - restored 1977 or 1978 unit on display at the Chicago Auto Show. I remember these patrolling the interstate growing up as a "Flatlander" for a while!
