This work takes place through Operation Acolhida, which is an organized response by the Brazilian government in partnership with PAHO and other international organizations and Brazilian institutions.

Operação Acolhida involves actions at the border, welcoming, protecting and internalizing migrants and refugees, offering assistance from the first contact.

The municipality of Pacaraima is approximately 200 kilometers from the capital of Roraima, Boa Vista. In both locations, Operação Acolhida offers shelters equipped to guarantee food, safety and health. These shelters have specific spaces for groups in vulnerable situations, such as indigenous people, LGBTQIAPN+, elderly people and people with disabilities.

As soon as they arrive, migrants undergo a health screening, receiving the vaccines provided for in the Brazilian Vaccination Calendar through the SUS.

They also have access to all health services in the country, including Primary Care, with prenatal care, diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases, among other health care, both in Boa Vista and in its next destinations, which are defined in the internalization process.

Futurist Jim Carroll is running his Daily Inspiration series for March 11/18 on the theme of “What is it that World Class Innovators Do That Others Don’t Do?” The leadership ideas are based on an original keynote he gave early in 2009 after a client asked him to identify these issues. He developed this carefully curated list based on 15 years of observations of how his global clients responded to fast-paced change.

An idea on its own is just an idea. Shared ideas are different - they accelerate innovation through faster discovery of opportunities! The fact is, if you have an idea and I have an idea, we have two ideas. If we share those ideas, we have something powerful! We can never be too short of great ideas. In that context, world-class innovators recognize that ideas are their most powerful asset, knowing that the smallest of shared ideas can become the most powerful opportunity.

When compiling my list of world-class innovations was this: world-class innovators were becoming relentlessly focused on doubling down on their ability to share ideas, chase ideas, find ideas, develop ideas, and internalize ideas. It seemed they came to realize that ideas were becoming the new currency of success - and in that context, the convergence of a variety of trends suddenly allowed organizations to accelerate their 'idea machines,' and hence, accelerate their capabilities for innovative thinking. Four key trends were underway.

Sapiential circles: We have connected the minds of people around the world who share an interest in a topic or issue -- they become an idea-generating sapiential circle.

Social connectivity: The rise of social networks led to an explosion in the source of new ideas - powerful discussions about anything and everything in open view.

Open innovation: The trend of cooperative open-source development and other innovations led to the birth of new ideas and opportunities - tracking them became critical!

Idea platforms: Powerful collaborative software platforms emerged that allowed organizations to work faster, smarter, and collaborate more - and share new ideas faster!

Suddenly, there were some increasingly powerful tools and idea machines available all over the place - and world-class innovators were rapidly aligning and adapting to them, recognizing they would provide a path to the future of innovative thinking.

Sapiential circles

One of the most profound of these trends had to do with the rise of "ever-growing sapiential circles" - a core trend that is driving rapid knowledge growth, and which is having a huge impact on idea sharing. The phrase comes from Warren Bennis, a distinguished professor at Southern California's Marshall School of Business -- he was referring to how the knowledge of a group tended to increase exponentially as new members were added to the group. What we are witnessing in the world today is a dramatic increase in our human sapiential circles as a result of global connectivity.

Quite simply, we have connected the minds of people around the world who share an interest in a topic or issue -- they become a sapiential circle. The result is dramatic -- for example, the amount of medical knowledge used to double every eight years but now doubles every 78 days; it is said that half of what an engineering student learns in their first year is obsolete or revised by the time they graduate because new engineering knowledge is shared so quickly; discoveries now occur quicker simply because like minds are connecting quicker.

Social connectivity

The explosion in the growth of social networks is both good and bad. They're massively destructive when it comes to social order, politics, personal ethical behavior, and more. yet at the same time, they are an invaluable source of idea insight. Customers are talking about products and services in the open, providing a powerful feedback mechanism. People share concepts ideas and information quickly and openly, allowing new ideas to bubble and then explode into global view. Companies can launch new ideas and instantly gauge potential reactions, and as a result, change their future trajectory faster. So many things happen all at once that quite simply, social networks lead to the future happening all at once, everywhere, all the time.

Open innovation

The trend towards open software as embodied by the Linux operating system defined the future of many industries, with the idea that open and shared research and development could provide a better product or service. Today, everything from farm tractors to home automation technology to energy microgrids is being impacted by open source ideas and open innovation - providing a powerful source of innovation ideas for any world-class innovator that chooses to plug in, tune in, and listen and participate in the development.

Idea platforms

In the early days of collaboration, organizations were using software like Lotus Notes, Microsoft Sharepoint, Skype, and Google Docs to share ideas and information. Today, software like Slack and Teams allows organizations to collaborate and share information faster; GitHub accelerates software development through collaborative development; Zoom allows massive interpersonal video-based collaboration. World-class innovators adapted and aligned to the use of these types of platforms early and often, knowing that a solid foundation for idea sharing was a solid foundation for faster innovation.

Take all of these trends and add them together, and it's quite clear that we are in a different world with fast ideas. Quite simply, world-class innovators learned early on, and know to this day, that the ability to create and nurture a culture, foundation, platform, and methodology for idea generation, sharing, and listening to these fast ideas would be fundamental to their future innovation success!

Fast ideas matter. Capturing them, nurturing them, sharing them, and learning from them matters more!

(Note: The images for this post were generated through a text-to-image AI tool. The arrival of AI will accelerate idea sharing even faster than before, and world-class innovators are already aligning with this reality.)

The real-cost cafe was designed as a restaurant. Video on large screens of restaurant workers combined with personal "place setting" screens to inform visitors about the total-environmental costs that are associated with common seafoods. The association of the information to the environment where it would later be needed was spot on. The content wasn't preachy, either, letting you (or those who eat seafood, anyway) decide to internalize this message for yourself.

At the end of the video you got your "check" which reinforced the main message.

Text of this screen:

Rockfish.

High cost for our oceans because of habitat destruction!

Pick up a seafood watch guide and make a difference!

A commercial is being filmed for work over the next week or so (I'm in it serving chips and salsa, by the way, which is awesome), and they made this announcement via dry erase board.

I was just kind of skimming as I walked into the kitchen, not internalizing anything I was reading. Imagine my shock and awe when I read, "Come in a spick," I re-read it several times as I got closer, still not understanding, until I finished the sentence.

Oohhh! Come in a spick AND SPAN UNIFORM! Duuuhhh! Still, "come in a spick" is pretty funny.

I try to describe myself through this box. This box is made out of steel. This box has two levels, the top level has lots of sparkling clipped nail-heads, and the lower level has a bubble level and magnet. Steel, the exterior of this box, expresses my eager to become a strong person. The upper level with clipped twinkling nail-heads describes me as an extrovert. While the bubble level and a small magnet bar in the lower level is ultimate goal of internalized myself. The spirit level is a metaphorical expression that I want to maintain neutrality all the time, and the magnet means that I want to have balanced mind and spirit- negative and positive, in other words, yin and yang.

For many years, I was told by a managing director at my ultra-high net worth financial firm: “The only reason our clients hire us is because we are experts in an essential reporting function to the IRS. If they wanted to learn this area of reporting, they'd take the time to do the work and not need us. They are the geniuses changing the world.”

These statements sound funny to me now, for several reasons, but at the time I heard this director speak, I internalized the words, thinking: “Yes, they are geniuses. I'm simply an intelligent cog, who indirectly helps them change the world, with my experience & education. Other than my specific role, I don't have much to offer...." That "specific role" did cost me 6 years of straight college attendance and thousands of hours doing internships and other previous jobs, but it didn't feel as important as the direct role my clients played in their companies and serving on BODs (Board of Directors) for other companies.

Turns out that “sales pitch” rattled off by this director, which was given in reference to many tech billionaires, was selling a false narrative: ultimately, they wanted to control the world, not necessarily change it for the better. {And wow, they have done it, right? At any and all expense. Can't say I'm wrong on that! Technology & Government... ouch. The most lethal combo working against humanity present-day. It's a shame when technology could be exclusively used for good.}

🌟In a twist of irony, last summer, after navigating so many obstacles, it occurred to me how much I was like these former clients, in terms of genius (particularly creatively solving problems), except for two differentiating factors: I have a strong moral compass and I'm not a character sellout. I value and prioritize my character & principles over perceived public reputation and greed.

For years, I underestimated myself and put these CEO techies on a pedestal. Now I can see it clearly: while I do not hold advanced degrees in science or technology, I am just as smart as they are, if not more. Go figure. A blonde with brains. “Better keep her quiet, she just may inspire actual change, not “pretend greedy” change, like us. And she's better looking than us, too.” Do you think that's how the convo went behind the scenes? Haha! If you only knew the extent of BS thrown my way… you'd understand that statement and how much I've been messed with in Silicon Valley.

A few years ago, I dubbed some of these male CEOs "game changers” and while some have admittedly changed the automotive and technology game… the majority are-law breakers & womanizers.

🌟It has been crazy enlightening to be an unemployed cog out of the system, to say the least. Definitely learned way more about how the world works (especially America!) from my street education than I would have learned from any PhD program. And to think, at one point in my life, I considered going for another advanced degree, ha! Although I appreciate in-classroom learning, I'm so overcooked on traditional schooling... and not interested in taking on any more student loans... that's for sure.

Expanding the Guides’ series of academic publications we delve into the psychology of appearance with a first entry exploring its history of research. Adoption consistently broadening with the industry’s options, today tens of billions are spent annually on all manner of procedures. How tattooing or scarification compare in acceptability to say the whole series of mainstream often invasive cosmetic procedures is an intriguing yet rarely debated distinction. From an historical context the lines between subversive and conventional practices may be argued by some as entirely, subjectively arbitrary

| ‘Evidence for the fascination humans have with physical appearance comes from a rich variety of sources, including mythology and legends, anecdotes from history, fairy tales and a variety of contemporary sources. Examples of the interest we as a species take both in our own appearance and the way we present ourselves to others have been derived from as long as 30,000 years ago, when in Africa people chose to decorate their faces, and from examples of portraiture from 23,000 BC…

We are also preoccupied with our own appearance. The first true mirrors were made in 1460 by the Venetians, who worked out how to create clear glass. People enjoyed seeing themselves so much that this quickly turned into big business. The del Gallo brothers found out how to create a perfect reflection in 1507, but the Venetians managed to keep the knowledge to themselves for more than a century, despite the efforts of spies and diplomats from other countries who tried to discover their secret. We examine our own appearance thousands of times in our lives, and most of us respond to the urge to check out our reflection in shop windows or mirrors when the opportunity arises. The sight of our familiar appearance does much to reassure us about our identity; however, we are taken aback when our appearance does not conform to our own internalized self-image – for example when harsh lighting offers a version of ourselves which appears older than our internalized self-view, or when others claim that a photo we consider unflattering is in fact a good likeness. Physical changes to the body, and in particular the face, powerfully affect the way we experience ourselves and take some time to assimilate into our self-view.

This phenomenon is recognized by health care professionals who carefully manage the first post-operative glimpse in a mirror following major trauma or surgery. Those affected can be shocked for some time afterwards when catching sight of an unexpected image… Whatever our personal beliefs, most of us actively attempt to influence the way we look (for example, through our choice of clothing or hairstyle), either to conform to perceived norms of appearance, or out of a desire to express our individuality… | full article

The Self

Herbert Mead: our learned understanding of the responses of others to our conduct/ particular patterns of preference and response. (Pg 156)

“Norms are rules governing behavior and serve the function of making behavior predictable, for only if we can predict one another’s behavior with considerable reliability is it possible for us to interact. (Pg. 157)”

What cultural norms do you think surround/influence you and your behavior?

Socialization: the process by which culture is learned and internalized by each normal member of society – much of which occurs during childhood.

Cultural determinism: the claim that an almost infinite array of cultural and social patterns is possible and that human nature can be shaped into almost any form by cultural forces.

Role Performance: the actual behavior in a particular role, in contrast to how they are supposed to behave.

Do you think you put on a role performance?

In an incredible display of affection for the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution and of support for the Cuban revolutionary project, the people are chanting, “I am Fidel,” as the caravan containing the ashes of Fidel moves from town to town across the island. The phrase emerged from the repeated affirmation, in these days of mourning, of commitment to the principles taught by Fidel. For those who proclaim it, the phrase represents a way of saying that he or she has internalized the principles taught by Fidel, so that Fidel has not died, but lives in each person committed to the revolutionary project. The use of the phrase may have been given a boost by Daniel Ortega, the President of Nicaragua and leader of the Sandinista Revolution, when he asked at the beginning of his oration at the Mass Act on the evening of November 29, “Where is Fidel?” And the congregated mass chanted in response, “Yo soy Fidel.”

Pop-Art

"Big Brother is watching you" is the omnipresent, chilling slogan of the totalitarian government, The Party, in George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). The phrase appears on posters everywhere in the fictional state of Oceania, serving as a constant, stark reminder to the citizens that they are under perpetual surveillance. Big Brother is the Party's supreme leader—a figurehead who is never actually seen in person but whose face and presence dominate public life. This slogan is not merely a warning; it is the fundamental tool of psychological control, ensuring that every citizen regulates their own thoughts and actions out of fear of detection and subsequent punishment.

The constant repetition of "Big Brother is watching you" fosters an environment of absolute fear and paranoia. The government utilizes advanced technology, primarily telescreens (two-way television-like devices found in every home and public space), to achieve total, inescapable monitoring. These devices not only broadcast propaganda but also listen and watch everything. This technological surveillance is reinforced by a vast network of human spies, including the Thought Police and even children encouraged to report their parents. The slogan's power lies in its ambiguity: since Big Brother is a face without a verifiable body, the threat of being watched is everywhere and nowhere simultaneously, making resistance seemingly futile.

Ultimately, the phrase is a concise articulation of the novel's central theme: the total destruction of privacy and individualism by a monolithic state. The goal of the Party's surveillance is not just to catch people breaking rules, but to eliminate the very possibility of private thought or independent action. By internalizing the fact that "Big Brother is watching," citizens are forced to practice "crimestop," the self-imposed prevention of "thoughtcrime"—any unorthodox or critical thought. The perpetual scrutiny aims to make every citizen a willing, conforming extension of the Party's will, ensuring that dissent is crushed before it can even form.

Beyond its original context in the novel, "Big Brother is watching you" has become a powerful cultural metaphor used globally to critique and warn against the dangers of **excessive government surveillance** and the erosion of civil liberties. It's invoked whenever discussions arise about state monitoring, mass data collection, and the power of security agencies. The phrase encapsulates the public anxiety that modern technological capabilities could enable a real-world totalitarian state like Oceania, making it a timeless caution against allowing authority to gain unchecked power over the private lives of its citizens.

Mo-re than 60 years of independence in India has not meant freedom from an exploitative Brahminical caste hierarchy. Casteism is still deeply entrenched in our socie-ty, taking on various forms, from exclusion and discrimination to the most gruesome and barbaric incidents of atrocities. The shocking incident of the rape of a dalit woman and her daughter in .

-~tiair~anjii ahd the subsequent pubHc lynching of her entire family shot to prominence, but the unfortunate fact remains th~t Kha,ir.lanJi -is nar.diy an aberration. Caste·based discrimination and caste atrocities are a chilling reality in every part of the country. .

Most shamefully, educational institutions, where one is supposed to learn and internalize new and progressive values, -also reve~l-this entrenched casteist mentality. We have seen how SC students inAIIMS are subjected to segregation, caste .abuse and victimization; In our own campus, we have seen how casteism is prevalent. abetted not just by some sectJons of the student community but also by the JNU administration. .

During the last year alone, we have seen casteism rear its ugly head time and again. We have had to struggle against incidents of gross caste~based academic discrimination and under-grading. In some centres, the administration has tried to throw out SQ/ST students on spurious grounds, or stall the financial assistance they are entitled to. During the-past year, the student cornp1unity had to wage a robust struggle for ensuring OBC reservations, even though this was legally man-dat~. W~ h_ave .,.$een for ourselves how the JNU administration time and again did everything possible to scuttle the .

·implementation of OBC reservations in JNU. .

For th" e past few days, as the JNUSU,elections approach, the YFE has been living up to the expectations we have of them. Arousing themse, lves from a deep and long slumber, they have woken up only to bring out a series of casteist pamphlets. We are well-acquainted with YFE's casteist politics, having seen their single minded agenda of opposing not just reservation, but any small step towards social equality. .

At a timewhen we ne-ed to remember Khairlanji, and intensify our struggle against casteism in all its forms, the YFE is busy desperately trying to whip up casteist frenzy. A few days back, the YFE brought out a pamphlet which made a ridiculous argument that oppression by Brahminism is purely "symbolic" since they are in a numerical minority! The entire pamphlet was a shameless attempt to pit OBCs and dalits, both victims of the Brahminical caste order, against each other and divide a united opposi-tion against the exploitative Brahminical caste hierarchy. .

t;"iowever hard the YFE might try to project itself as the messiahs and true well-wishers of the dalits, 'h!e will not forget their true colours. Two years back, they brought out a venomous pamphlet in JNU (12 June 2006) calling all those who av~il of reservations (at that time, only the SC/ST/PH quotas were in place) "thieves" and "inferior mortals" who deserved to be thrown out of JNU. They have openly insulted dalits by sweeping roads and cleaning shoes to protest against reservations and other attempts to ensure social equity. The YFE cannot tool us into believing they care for social equality and dalit assertion. .

Coming back to the supposed "benignnand "symbolic'' nature of oppression by Brahminism; we would like to give some examples of this lJbenignity". This is what one of the core texts of Brahminism, the Manu Smriti, has to prescribe: .

ulfhe [a Sudra] arrogantly teaches Brahmins their duty, the King shall cause hot oil to be poured into his mouth and into his ears ... a low-caste man, who tries to place himself on the same seat with a man ofa high caste, shall be branded on the hip and be banished, or (the King) shall cause his buttock to be gashed." .

Such horrendous prescriptions formed the backbone of the Brahminical caste order, which stratified sdciety and brutally suppre.ssed those who tried to break its shackles. Raising the question of whom exactly carries out brutal caste atrocities hides and sidelines the real problem of the inherent discriminatory, violent and exploitative nature of Brahminical caste hierarchy. .

The Khalr!anji incident is an indicator of the extreme brutality and intolerance that is unleashed against any attempt of upward mobility by the victims of our exploitative caste order. AI SA appeals to the student community to attend a public meeting tonight (17th Oct) at Godavari mess, at 9.30 pm on "The Realities Of Caste Atrocities: In The Mirror Of Khairlanjl", which is being organized on the occasion of the launch of Anand Teltumbde's book "Khairlanji:AStrange and Sitter Crop". Tonight's meeting will give us an opportunity to meet the author Anand Teltumbde, a noted dalit thinker of our times, and debate the many dimensions of the realities of caste oppression today, of which Khairlanji has become a telling motif. .

January 24, 2012 - "A Regulatory Framework for Managing Systemic Risk" - Steven L. Schwarcz presented a Risk Regulation Seminar about the systemic risk in the financial sector and how current approaches to regulating financial risk are insufficient. Schwarcz suggested that a new analytical framework could be established in order to help internalize risk within financial institutions themselves to as to minimize external risk that might affect multiple institutions within the economy. This might involve firms paying into a 'systemic risk fund' that would help firms to be able to recover from financial failures. Schwarcz is a Stanley A. Star Professor of Law and Business at Duke University.

However, let it be known that Africatown community members are far from victims. Rather, during my time in Africatown, I had the incredible opportunity to witness a robust and intimate community of historically aware and politically engaged citizens. The people whom I interacted with had the ability to situate themselves within their history while engaging with current socioeconomic challenges, as well as carrying with them an internalized vision for Africantown’s potential future as a prosperous town. The ability to vacillate between these spheres cannot be understated. Africatown community members offer an unprecedented challenge of ongoing industrial hegemony in the “Chemical Corridor of the East Coast.” I cannot reiterate enough how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to be of help and form the intimate relationships that I did over the span of just a few days. I sincerely hope to return as soon as possible and continue to engage in Africatown’s ongoing crusade in any way that I can prove useful.
