Quartzite from the Precambrian of Wisconsin, USA.
Quartzite is a crystalline-textured, monomineralic, intermediate- to high-grade metamorphic rock composed of quartz (SiO2 - silicon dioxide). It forms by metamorphism of sandstone, or sometimes by cooking siltstone or chert.
This quartzite sample comes from southern Wisconsin's Baraboo Ranges, where a hard, erosion-resistant Precambrian metamorphic unit called the Baraboo Quartzite occurs. These rocks were originally eolian, fluvial, and deltaic sandstones; they have since been subjected to metamorphism and structural folding. Original sedimentary structures are preserved, such as cross-bedding and ripple marks. Baraboo Quartzites vary in color from pinkish to dark reddish to grayish. During metamorphism, quartz overgrowths formed over the original quartz sand grains. Long-term, modern weathering can result in the original sand grains being released.
This unit has economic significance - it has been quarried historically and in modern times. The quartzite is broken down into gravel-sized pieces for use as railroad ballast and erosion-control rip-rap.

My first Ardea intermedia ssp. intermedia (56-70 cm). This is the bird that I went to Lake Joondalup to see. It is a very unusual sighting in the south-west. Since then the attraction for birders there has been a Hudsonian Godwit. That is one of less than a dozen sightings in Australia and it has hung around for weeks, but well outside camera range.
