LDP002 heads up LDP005 and LDP007 with late running QRNational freight 7MB7.
The popularity of the LDP Class on QRNational freight services is clear, with units being thinly stretched with the pre-christmas rush. Normally headed by two locomotives, some trains are reduced to a single LDP Class leading some of QRNationals older stablemates, including the 421, 422 and X Class.
It is very rare to see a QRNational freight this far south in full daylight, however this was the case on December 19th, when 5BM7 passed through Cootamundra almost 18 hours behind the timetable. Frequent late running of QRNational east coast freights in the lead up to Christmas left timetables shattered, with trains forced to wait around at various points on their routes for relief crew.
Due through the previous evening, 5BM7 is headed up by LDP005, LDP006 and G516 - the latter being the first visit of a QRNational G Class to NSW in quite some time.
GL102 leads a pair of 423 Class (borrowed from QRNational in exchange for the use of a Freightliner GL) and HL203 through Whittingham Junction with 4581 Freightliner containers to Wee Waa. Normally staging out of Port Botany, the train had instead staged from Carrington Yard once GL102 had run light engine up from Chullora.
Elephants CLF4 and CLF3 race south through Mittagong with 3BM7 Interail Brisbane to Melbourne freight.
If some of these photos look familiar, they probably are - I'm organising my photos from 2008, and taking the opportunity to rework some of them and either upload for the first time, or replace older photos.
Gloucester Coal operates a number of mines in both NSW and Queensland. Two such mines are located alongside the North Coast Line, specifically at Duralie and Stratford. While Pacific National currently holds the contract for export coal trains from Stratford to the ports in Newcastle, QRNational (previously known as Interail in NSW) hold a contract for the transport of coal from the Duralie open cut mine to the Stratford open cut mine and washery. Here, the coal from Duarlie is processed and loaded onto Pacific National trains for export. Due to the siding arrangement at Duralie, the train operates in a push-pull configuration.
When the train started operating it was using members of the 421, 422 and 423 classes (among others) and QRNational owned hoppers (regauged Queensland hoppers). Now the train operates with a 6000 class locomotive at one end (6011 being the last of the class in coal service) instead of the older locomotive, hauling new hoppers owned by Gloucester Coal. A further change is set for early 2012, with regauged 2801 and 2815 arriving in NSW from Queensland.
42301 and 42305 are seen at the rear of an empty coal train bound for Duralie.
42305 leads NW455 empty coal across the bridge at Dora Creek, bound for Newstan to load. Interail had (until 2008) a contract to haul coal from Newstan Colliery to Vales Point Power Station, near Morisset.

S300 and B76 can be seen edging into the platform at Gosford, waiting for a passenger train on platform 3 to depart to Sydney. Both locomotives are owned by CFCL Australia, and at the time were on lease to Interail (QRNational) to operate 1451/4152 Sydney (Yennora) to Broadmeadow (and return) freight. These trains conveyed loading to/from Brisbane and Melbourne, whereas the Brisbane and Melbourne bound trains would pause to attach/detach Sydney loading. It was not uncommon for these trains to be used for loco balancing movements, should extra motive power be required for one of the north/south trains.

CLF4 is assisted by CLF1, LDP009 and LDP006 as they struggle up the steep grade into Pennant Hills. Both northbound and southbound trains must tackle steep grades to get through Hornsby, and it was quite a specactle to hear the combination of older EMD DC traction power with brand new cutting edge EMD AC traction - all four units were working hard.
CLF4 leads CLP9 and X53 through Dulwich Hill with a diverted 5BM7 intermodal service. During trackwork on the Main South Line between Glenfield and Macarthur stations, it was not uncommon for north-south intermodal trains passing through Sydney to be diverted via the Metropolitan Goods Lines, and via the Illawarra.

X54 and 2202 combine to work 2152 up freight from Glenlee to Yennora. This rather short train is the Sydney loading from Melbourne, that arrived earlier that morning on 5MB7.
It was a nice surprise to see 2202 again. This ex NSWGR 422 class is still owned by ARG, although is not used by them, instead being leased out to other operators. 2202 had been stored in Melbourne for some time, so to see it back in Sydney was rather unusual to say the least!
Following a very late running MS9 service, G533 leads MB7 north into Sydney, assisted by CLF1 and G534. G533 is on lease from SCT, rendered surplus with the delivery of 15 SCT Class locomotives earlier in the year.
CLP10 leads a diverted 7BM7 south through Waterfall. LDP002 can be seen as the third unit on the consist. This locomotive would lead on the return trip to Sydney from Melbourne.
CLF4 leads a CLP and X53 south through Moss Vale with 1SM9. 1SM9 used to operate between Yennora (Sydney) and Dynon (Melbourne) on a Sunday afternoon. It used to be shocking for reliability, sometimes running many hours late (if at all).
CLF1/4477 passing under Burwood Road at Belfield with T281 P&O container service from Botany to Yennora. CLF1 is currently on hire from QRNational/Interail to assist with traffic requirements.
Train returning to Martins Creek Ballast Quarry after unloading between Sandy Hollow and Kerrabee on the Muswellbrook to Ulan line.
Shuttle service with train running from Stratford Mine Washery unloader to Duralie Mine to reload.
Train arranged in distributed power mode as 42220 + 42301 + train + 42303.
Locos on both ends required as Duralie mine had no turning facilities.
Following reloading 42303 would lead back to Stratford washery and then to Duralie.
Three variations of liveries carried in NSW by the 421 and 42 class locomotives represent at the Goulburn Streamliners event at Goulburn on 1-10-22. 42105 has been recently preserved into the Northern Rivers Railroad scheme which it wore from the mid 1990's and into its QR National days before being stored in 2014
4201 wears the NSWGR 125th Anniversary livery, while 4204 wears the original NSWGR Indian Red scheme
INTERAIL #NW456 empty coal from Vales Point power station, returning to Newstan Colliery loader. The train is slowing down to approach the balloon loop about 1km ahead. 42306 + 42305 & 42103 are doing the work on 7th April 2006.

LQ3122 is on 3166 acid tankers leaving the south end of Forrestfield on 13 November 2007. LQ3122 was originally Westrail L Class L271 and was acquired and used by Queensland Rail's subsidiary Interail. The loco was nicknamed the "Rainbow Warrior" but actually carried the name "John Douglas Kerr. Photo: Jim Bisdee.
