While some of the other alcid species seemed to be less common in St. Paul this year than in some years, this species was certainly holding its own with lots of opportunities for everything from head portraits to interaction on the cliffs to flight shots.

It’s not recommended to touch wild animals but in this case we had to rescue the little guy from the cat… and make sure he would take off flying again.

#MazeOfMetamorphosis According to an estimation by the Japanese government, there are about one million people in the Country who live a life of self reclusion. They remain inside their house for years without any social interaction. Hikikomori phenomenon is a typical cultural syndrome that can be understood not only as an escape from too demanding school and work standards but also as an extreme protest against violent conformism.

After a three-months-long continuous research I finally came in contact with a self isolated man who accepted to be portrayed by me. I knew it was going to be difficult to gain his trust, precisely because those who isolate themselves from the world do it by definition because they don't want to have contact with it. I was ready for his refusal, even at the last moment, and I would have respected his will. Anyway, he accepted me to enter his house.

I asked to Fumihiro Yoshino (a butoh performer) to become the space of the room. I used a plexiglass cube to represent this space too, as a barrier. As I learned from butoh dance, I didn't ask Yoshino for anything in particular, just to be the space of the room, waiting for things to happen. My project on the one hand wants to illustrate social issues, but on the other wants to do it in an unusual and artistic way, letting things happen in front of me, and butoh dance has proved to be an excellent means, precisely because it is a form of non-conceptual, meaningless art that freely leads people to occupy a space and change in it. The metamorphosis concerns the subject, but also the viewer.

Someone decked the skies with boughs of sprites.

The red jellyfish in the sky is a unique red sprite high above a storm across the southern plains of the United States.

Taken in the early hours of 21 October by outdoor photographer Paul Smith, red sprites, along with blue jets and elves, are elusive electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere that are difficult to study as they occur over thunderstorms and propagate out into space.

“There were some very strong events and many dancing sprites as the storms matured,” says Paul.

“I was so amazed to capture some very bright reflections in the lake I was shooting from. I was out until the early hours of the morning and got home at 5:00, but so worth it!” The photo was taken from Lake Acadia, Oklahoma. Watch a video of the storm here.

Sightings of these elusive high altitude optical phenomena had long been based on hearsay and appeared to be linked with thunderstorms. First camera images of red sprites were obtained about 30 years ago. The scientific community was intrigued and wanted to learn more, leading to the creation of an observatory that is now aboard the International Space Station.

Called the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor, or ASIM, the suite of instruments includes optical cameras and photometers to capture red sprites and other high altitude luminous events as well as lightning. ASIM also carries a Gamma-ray detector to study so-called Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs).

All these instruments are mounted together outside the European Columbus module and look downwards towards the Earth. The combination of optical and Gamma-ray detectors in the same payload makes it possible to describe the lightning processes that lead to TGF emissions. ASIM provides the highest ever spatial and temporal resolution for the study of electrical activity linked to thunderstorms.

New data from ASIM will improve our understanding of the effect of thunderstorms on the atmosphere and thus contribute to more accurate climate models.

The data ASIM is generating has been made available to the public for the first time and can be consulted at the ASIM Science Data Center. A recent paper was also published in Science magazine.

Though they are difficult to detect due to their faintness and the fact that they disappear within milliseconds, the conditions from Earth were just right to catch these sprites in action.

The life of a planetary nebula is often chaotic, from the death of its parent star to the scattering of its contents far out into space. Captured here by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, ESO 455-10 is one such planetary nebula, located in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion).

The oblate shells of ESO 455-10, previously held tightly together as layers of its central star, not only give this planetary nebula its unique appearance, but also offer information about the nebula. Seen in a field of stars, the distinct asymmetrical arc of material over the north side of the nebula is a clear sign of interactions between ESO 455-10 and the interstellar medium.

The interstellar medium is the material such as diffuse gas between star systems and galaxies. The star at the center of ESO 455-10 allows Hubble to see the interaction with the gas and dust of the nebula, the surrounding interstellar medium, and the light from the star itself. Planetary nebulae are thought to be crucial in galactic enrichment as they distribute their elements, particularly the heavier metal elements produced inside a star, into the interstellar medium which will in time form the next generation of stars.

"NGC 4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy or Caldwell 38) is an edge-on spiral galaxy about 30 to 50 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.

This edge-on galaxy exhibits a slightly warped and extended disk, likely due to ongoing interactions with neighboring satellite galaxies or other galaxies."

Besides the rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) this bigger but similar species of parakeets has become resident in Cologne for some years now. Their numbers seem to increase and they can be found in parks and cemetries quiet easy.

The perched bird has a piece of fish, the hovering mate is taking a closer look. I saw the bird with the fish take off from the nesting platform with this piece of fish, and fly around with it a while before returning. Interesting behavior to me, that they would carry this around, a behavior I've not observed before. I'm not a seasoned Ornithologist, it may be that individual Osprey are possessive of their catches, even among mated pairs. If anyone has knowledge they could share, I'd be interested!

Mutualism is a type of ecological interaction between two or more species that benefits each species involved. It's a common interaction in nature.

Several well-known examples of mutualistic arrangements exist. The partnership between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and leguminous plants is one example. In addition, cows possess rumen bacteria that live in the digestive tract and help digest the plants the cow consumes. Associations between tree roots and certain fungi are often mutualistic...

Ant–treehopper mutualisms are centred on the availability of honeydew, a sugary fluid offered by treehoppers to attract ants, which respond by defending their hosts against predators and parasitoids.
