This photograph has been borrowed from farmsanctuary.org. The photograph cannot be added to any specific place on the map because there are intense livestock operations (ILOs) across Canada and the entire continent. In the USA, these operations are called CAFOs (concentrated animal feedlot operations). These are the industrial operations that supply supermarkets and fast food chains with meat and eggs. Animals in these systems are not treated as living beings but as production units.
On Saturday December 8, CTV's investigative journalism program, W5, aired a piece on the treatment of pigs in intensive livestock operations (hog barns) in Canada. It is profoundly disturbing to watch.
There are 27,000,000 pigs raised each year on 7,000 farms in Canada. Their lives are miserable. Their suffering is not worth the pork chop on our plates, the cruelty beyond description. Close to where I live there are three huge hog barns. Those pigs, as clever and socially sophisticated as my dog, never see the light of day for the duration of their lives. They are transported long distances for slaughter.
The Humane Society of Canada is working with the National Farm Care Council to negotiate better standards of welfare for pigs. On their website you can find good information about their programs to improve the lives of farm animals. Right now, they are asking people to sign a petition. There is a link below.

The National Farm Animal Care Council has published a report on the welfare of pigs. The report devotes a section to the practice of castration on piglets. The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is asking for you to sign a petition to improve the welfare of pigs raised in confinement, treated cruelly and subjected to painful procedures without pain medication. Please sign. cfhs.ca/
