One of the most exciting components of A+ Partners in Education, Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. The 2015 competition runs concurrently at Howard, Mt. Hebron, Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake high schools.
Teams of five students and one adult coach each read the same 16 pre-assigned books over four months. Selected by HCLS instructors and HCPSS media specialists, titles include a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Thanks to generous sponsors, all teams receive a set of books. In addition to reading the books, teams choose a team name then dress accordingly.
During the "battle" (a 50-question exam), a moderator asks questions that relate to one of the following: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes.

One of 2 interactive TEAL--Technology Enabled Active Learning--classrooms. The 3000 sq ft spaces, which seats 118 students with the faculty in the center, transformed a passive lecture model (of 350 students) into an interactive format. Physics 101 is required of all MIT students. The room includes three PCs at each table (of 8-9 students), whiteboards for each team, some 13 screens (so no sight line problems), 13 cameras (one per team whiteboard), and interactive response clickers for each student.
The lecture has been replaced by a constant series of experiments with students required to solve in groups; groups regularly report back their results to class (verbally, via clickers, via whiteboard or via PC software). The instructor (and TA's) roam the space and the many video cameras allow for instructor to show any team's work to the entire class with ease. See my separate FLICKR collection which has more photos of this space.

The university is on spring break next week; so, Jim will be going to work a little later each day. He didn’t go by his office this morning to set the coffee pot timer since instructors/professors won’t be at work. I didn’t sing onstage. Jim drove us to church. After church we went to the VCC dining room & found it closed. Jim drove us to El Torero Mexican. I got fish tacos, guacamole, & steamed veggies. It’s been a good day.

This is the lighting setup that was used for my self-portrait, "An Instructor."
On a black velvet background, we have a Canon 580EX II that was behind my head to act as a rim light. A 10" reflector above and to camera left, an 8" on camera left pointing at the abdomen and a strong 6" spot on camera right abdomen to highlight the pistol.
This was shot on my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod with a 488RC2 Ball Head. The camera was a Canon Rebel XSi with a 70-200mm f/2.8 USM with IS at 85mm, f/6.3, 1/200.
The pistol is a Springfield Armory XD Service (4" barrel) chambered in 9mm with Dawson Precision fiber optic sights.
Lightroom: Adjustment brush to increase exposure across the pistol barrel, instructor logo and around the rim of the subject. Color desaturation in the skin tones.
Photoshop: Healing on the skin and background. Noise reduction and a high key pass to bring out the highlights.

My little brother with Grand Master - J. Pat Burleson at Bob Nuttall's Karate University.
More on Burleson (from www.thekarateuniversity.com/instructors.htm), The "Martial Arts Legend"
Mr. Burleson was a pioneer in the Martial Arts, establishing his first studio in 1959. he now has over 250,000 graduates. Many of his Black Belts are admired and respected world-wide.
Mr Burleson began his career as a Boxing Champion and got his start in the martial arts after he joined the Navy, as part of the Naval Special Forces. It was during his miliary travels, that he first studied various fighting systems from China, Japan, and Korea. Those disciplines became the basis of the Burleson system., an art that combined the Orien't most effective fighting techniques. His stye became known as "American Karate". In 1964 he used this system to win the United States first National Karate Championship, held in Washington D.C. That "win" earned him the title as "Father of all American Karate Champions".
