I believe in organic gardening, so I don't spray my flowers. I smushed the bug between my fingers instead.

like we should have and we knew it, we went "just a little higher".

And when we were done doing that, we went just a little higher...

Olcenengo still had more to offer: at 15:40, the night train from Reggio di Calabria to Torino Porta Nuova should have popped by - but instead, I got treated to this rather odd combination of four boxes and two tigers. E652.087 (in the rather elegant new Mercitalia livery) and E652.172 (in a, shall we say, different livery) are conveying four wagons loaded with containers (two of which are curtain side containers) towards unknown destinations in the west. Olcenengo, 02-10-2019.

I was hoping to see a roadrunner. Instead I think I found a trail walker [rimshot].

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadrunner

The roadrunners (genus Geococcyx), also known as chaparral birds or chaparral cocks, are two species of fast-running ground cuckoos with long tails and crests. They are found in the southwestern and south-central United States, Mexico and Central America,[2][3] usually in the desert. Although capable of flight, roadrunners generally run away from predators. On the ground, some have been clocked at 32 km/h (20 mph).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watson_Lake_(Arizona)

"Watson Lake is one of two reservoirs at the Granite Dells, in Prescott, Arizona, that was formed in the early 1900s when the Chino Valley Irrigation District built a dam on Granite Creek. The City of Prescott bought the reservoir and surrounding land in 1997 to preserve it as recreational land. Local rockclimbers use the granite cliffs above and adjacent to the lake for top-roping and lead climbing. The lake is also the home of TriCity Prep Rowing Crew, a local high school team and only rowing team in Northern Arizona.

prescott-az.gov/rec-services/recreation-areas-prescott/la...

"Located about four miles from downtown Prescott, Watson Lake offers a variety of outdoor activities for everyone. Boating enthusiasts will find convenience with two boat launches and options for canoe and kayak rentals. Fishing is a delight with carp, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass swimming in the lake. If bird watching is your passion, head to the nearby Watson Woods Riparian Preserve, endorsed by the Audubon society, boasting hundreds of bird species including eagles and pelicans.

"For hikers, the easily accessible Peavine and Iron King Trails, both close to the lake, provide a pleasant and relatively flat terrain. During the summer months, visitors can set up camp at the available campsites, equipped with restrooms, showers, picnic tables, grills, fish cleaning stations, and a boat ramp. "

I figure that if I can come up with a head that looks ok then that's the trickiest bit sorted and the body will flow from there (and even maybe take some design cues from the head). So I've abandoned any attempt at a humanoid face and instead am leaning into alien, insectoid or completely helmeted styles. The overall style of these head is probably more akin to the Micronauts aliens series.

The left one feels way too modern, I like the green one in the center and the mosquito-looking thing on the right I'm not sure yet :-)

Instead of sweeping the camera side-to-side, I swept it from in front of me to above me and behind me, so both horizons go up and down on each side of the image.

Instead of flapping, they rely on rising air currents to gain altitude. Two types of rising air currents provide most lift for soaring eagles. The first, thermal updrafts, form when energy from the sun heats air at the Earth's surface and causes it to rise.

Most eagles have wings that are rather long and wide, to help them soar and glide with less effort.

Amazing lesson in aerodynamics.

Instead of Throwback Thursday, how 'bout Take A Trail Thursday? Without looking at the tags, or the album names, can you guess the name of this trail and where it's located? Hint: it's in a national monument in Oregon.

As for the image itself, it was a dark, sprinkly-wet morning, so the bark on the stunted trees, shrubbery and sagebrush were dark, and the colors were saturated, with a mildly-angry (or maybe just pissed off?) sky above the landscape.

Have not seen any for a few weeks and today, there was a bunch of them frolicking about. For whatever reason, they just seemed to be enjoying themselves. Tried something a little different with my setup on this shoot. Decided to put the camera in One Shot instead of AI Servo mode. Burst rate increased (kept in high-speed shooting) over Servo, and focus seemed to better. Hit rate also appears to be increased as well.

I know Servo mode is a little less reliable than One Shot is. Knowing that I am primarily looking mainly for perched birds, seemed a good decision. I think I'll keep it set that way for any decent winter days I can get outside.

Also maintained shooting with the camera in Crop Mode (1.6) which does allow for it to be zoomed-in in the viewfinder, giving me a larger target to focus on. I’m actually a fan of this feature because it allows me to focus better on composition since it crops the photo at the time of shooting versus doing it in post... which has to be cropped anyway. Subject size is the exact same size if I were to have done it in full frame, but again, benefits of this mode are above.

Effective focal length here is 1280mm if you factor in the 1.6 crop mode and the 800mm. Only a slight finishing crop to a 4:3 ratio and overall reduction in pixels for post.

Since there were no eagles feeding I decided to take a dive while in the area. This is the first view of the falls after arriving on the beach. I had to walk instead of driving down the road as it was totally covered in ice, I almost feel a couple of time.

They are 15.24 meters (50ft) high and is a very popular place. It is a 10 minute walk on the rocky beach when the tide is out, from the parking area (check the tide times). This is at low tide, when the tide is in the water is up to the black line on the rocks and where the ice stops.

When the falls are iced up it can be a great picture. This was after to warm days and heavy rainfall so much of the ice had melted.

The falls are located on the shore of the Bay of Fundy at Baxters Harbour.

Instead of taking photos I have been watching The Office. The weird thing about the death of a friend...along with the sadness (regret, guilt, etc), there's also all these existential questions that come to mind, except instead of their usual abstract form, they suddenly seem so clear and important and personal. And it just comes 24/7, these thoughts... And so I drown it out by watching The Office and therapizing myself on flickr.

Instead of cleaning up the mess that is my room I impulsively decided to start a '365 days' project! We'll see how long this lasts.. this one is going to be a total random one though! So no selfportraits the whole time or a theme like the '100 Days Of Magic' project :) Expect lots of borings shots of teacups or 100 pictures of my red coat and stuff like that ;)

Don’t worry; be happy. I hope you’re happy regardless of your age. I hope you’re happy no matter what you choose to do. Failures and frustrations are part of the experience in your life. They offer you opportunities for self-development. Think of what you have instead of what you lack. Refuse to worry; don’t project bad things in the future. You’re a unique individual, so comparing to others is not necessary. Be yourself and be happy.

Thanks for reading, dear Flickr friends. I wish you a happy and fulfilling new year!

„Being sensitive is a way of life. It is a way of embracing instead of blocking out the world. When you’re sensitive, you don’t have the „luxury” of avoiding the things that matter. You are by nature compassionate. Your sensitivity is your vitality, your flexibility, your engagement, your passion, your inspiration.

Fear is inviting you to be brave. Anger is showing you your healthy limits. Grief is showing you what needs letting go.

Don’t let anyone put you down when they don’t like the way their own sensitivity is reflected in you. Learn as much about your sensitivity as you can. It is a beautiful gift and it deserves honing and compassion.” - thehappysensitive.com

I'm not the kind of person who looks backward. Instead of looking into Canada's history, I chose to look into its future. I'm involved and inspired by creativity, design, and technology in RL. I'm proud to represent a country that drives innovation and is increasingly recognized as a world leader in technology. Wired magazine writes, "The Canadian government stands fully behind its researchers and innovators, and today they're leading the pack. Canada now has ownership of the global AI race and is the first country to have a national AI strategy." I designed this national costume to reflect this vision of tomorrow. GO CANADA! TAKE US TO THE FUTURE!

#Inktober2024

This is Carwin Jones. Carwin's eighteen years old. Instead of preparing to play football at college, Carwin's working on an oil rig this summer. He's been charged with attempted murder for his role in a schoolyard fight in Jena, Louisiana, last December. The fight, in which six black students allegedly attacked a white student, followed months of escalating racial tension stemming from nooses that white students hung from a "whites-only" tree at school.

In late June, his friend Mychal Bell was found guilty (by an all-white jury) of aggravated second-degree battery, and conspiracy to commit the same. Like the remaining four boys (one of whom, Theo Shaw, was unable to post bail and has been in jail awaiting trial since December) Carwin is waiting to hear when his trial will begin.

Carwin told me in a brief interview that he'd been looking forward to attending college on a football scholarship. He's spending the summer working on an oil rig.

As an update on the case, I strongly suggest setting your own Google alert for "Jena". MLK Jr. and Sharpton were in Jena recently, and Mychal Bell finally has a strong legal team working for him.

Newsweek did a piece last week, and once again, friends of justice seems to be the best place to read updates.

As an aside, someone broke into my car last week and stole one thing; the voice recorder on which I had an interview with Carwin Jones.

--

My Jena pictures have been published from Atlanta to Philly, Israel and beyond. The YouTube vid I put together has attracted more attention than any picture I've ever posted anywhere. Two weekends ago, I was interviewed about alternative media and citizen journalism for a station in Baton Rouge on a show called "Community Defender" with Louis and Adrian from the Nation of Islam. They had Amy Goodman on last week, and have dedicated their show to discussing the issues surrounding the case.

What I was most struck by were the calls from radio listeners who had family members serving sentences in Angola for "fighting". Inequity and injustice isn't confined to Jena, it seems.

I'm glad I could play a small part in getting the ball rolling (at least in the blogosphere) to help educate people about the case. It was exciting to see Democracy Now step in with their coverage, and big media is finally paying attention. More soon, as Bell's court date in September draws near.

INTRODUCTION TO THE 'RED SERIES'

Here is the same Fairy Floss machine, but taken with the Red 25 filter instead. This unprocessed view through the filter is what we must deal with in processing. Having already shown you some monochromatic examples with the red filter, what I will show here in coming days is a number of different ways the filter can be put to use in colour toning.

Two ways to do this are (1) to add colour to monochromes. I've done this before:

www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/49766634453/in/album-72...

www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/49924700721/in/album-72...

and (2) to use the red as the basis of the image itself. Once again I've provided some examples in the past:

www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/51124143583/in/album-72...

www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/51123680187/in/album-72...

But using the red as my base colour it is also possible to transform it into a range of other possible colours and this allows as much creativity as the imagination can provide.

31/52 - Don’t simply take a photograph of something that is in front of you, but instead focus on an idea that you find interesting.

I'm using this photo because wildlife photography interests me but I do not have the gear or patience required for it. This one fell into my lap though and was too good to pass up on.

This starling fledgeling had a very lucky escape today. A sparrowhawk swooped down to catch him and flew into the dustbin, with an enormous thud, stunning itself for a few seconds before flying away. The starling was stunned for a while too, long enough for me to grab my camera. He didn't hang around too long. Not the best backdrop but I had to snap away while I could.

Tuesday, 19 May 2020: our temperature late this afternoon is 12C (windchill 12C). Sunrise is at 5:39 am, and sunset is at 9:26 pm.

It is such a wet, miserable day here today, 19 May 2020. Last night, I checked the weather forecast, saw rain, and knew I needed to find some colourful images - from my archive, of course! - to post today. We are in for lots of rainy days, so I'm not sure when I will be getting out anywhere. My 15-day wait for a car repair appointment ends tomorrow, thank goodness, but I sure wish it was going to be nice and sunny once I get it back. Sooner or later, though, I will be seeing birds again, something that has happened on just a few scattered drives during the last two months.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am adding the description that I wrote under another previously posted photo, taken at the same time, to remind myself where I went and what I saw. Also, this is a very short video I took of a Snipe, on a very windy day:

flic.kr/p/2gHjTi6

"This photo was taken on 15 June 2016, when I went for a short drive SW of the city. I really do need to go to a few different areas, to see different bird species, but my most recent drives have been mainly to check on three different pairs of Mountain Bluebirds, and to see at least one of the usual Wilson's Snipes. This one gave a little stretch. On this trip, I saw all the usual things, knowing that before too long, all of them will have left on their long, long journeys."

"These plump, long-billed birds are among the most widespread shorebirds in North America. They can be tough to see thanks to their cryptic brown and buff coloration and secretive nature. But in summer they often stand on fence posts or take to the sky with a fast, zigzagging flight and an unusual “winnowing” sound made with the tail." From AllAboutBirds.

www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/wilsons_snipe/id

"Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) is a small, stocky shorebird. This species was considered to be a subspecies of the Common Snipe (G. gallinago) until 2003 when it was given its own species status. Wilson's Snipe differs from the latter species in having a narrower white trailing edge to the wings, and eight pairs of tail feathers instead of the typical seven of the Common Snipe. Its common name commemorates the American ornithologist Alexander Wilson." From Wikipedia.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilson's_snipe

According to Fisher and Acorn's book, "Birds of Alberta", "the common Snipe is both secretive and well camouflaged, so few people notice it until it flushes suddenly from a nearby grassy tussock. As soon as the Snipe takes to the air, it performs a series of quick zigzags - an evasive maneuver designed to confuse predators. Because of this habit, Snipes were among the most difficult birds to shoot (in the days when shorebirds were hunted for sport), and skilled sportsmen were known as "snipers" - a term later adopted by the military."
