The Greater Beth-el Temple church family welcomed Elder Calvin J. Gould, Sr. and his wife, First Lady Valerie Gould, as our new pastor and wife. Our Pastoral Installation Service with the theme Serving God’s People: A New Day, A New Beginning, was held on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Our speaker was Bishop Edward C. Price. Elder and First Lady Gould are excited and happy to serve Greater Beth-el Temple and the Omaha metropolitan community.
May the Lord bless them both in moving the church forward through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett is officially redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient with extensive Virginia ties, during a ceremony March 24, 2023, at the Blackstone Army Airfield near Blackstone, Virginia. Barfoot’s daughter Margaret Nicholls, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen, Director of the Army National Guard, and Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, gave remarks and unveiled the Fort Barfoot sign which will mark the front entrance of the installation. The ceremony featured static displays from the installation’s tenets and ceremonial music provided by the Troutville-based 29th Infantry Division Band. To commemorate Barfoot’s Native American heritage, representatives from Choctaw Nation as well as Virginia-based Native American tribes were in attendance and performed ceremonial songs and dance for the gathered audience. This was a project I have done in 2007. It's an installation using the weight and by this the pressure of a person to visualize the footprint one is leaving.
Sensors in a shoe measure the pressure on is bringing to the ground and this is causing a light bulb to glow. The sound of the light's dimmer is amplified to give sonic feedback. Inside the shoes little vibrators cause tangible feedback depending on the measured pressure.
Four of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command's top safety performers received recognition from Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, IMCOM commander, in front of a general session at the Installation Management Symposium April 20.
The two garrisons and two individuals won their categories in the 2011 Secretary of the Army, Chief of Staff Safety Awards program, the Army's top honor in the field.
Fort Campbell, Ky., received the award in the excellence in explosives safety category for a team effort in maintaining excellence in their explosives safety program. The garrison's proactive accident prevention and public awareness training was recognized by the department of defense explosive safety board inspection team as a best practice. Its leaders maintain active involvement in explosive safety efforts.
Fort Bragg, N.C., received the exceptional organization safety award. The garrison directorate of plans, training and mobilization was recognized for participation in the garrison safety program, proactive workplace safety efforts reducing significantly both costs and number of accidents in fiscal 2010, and active leadership involvement.
Maj. John R. Braun, of the Fort Campbell, Ky., directorate of emergency services, received the individual award of excellence for reducing the accident rate through an effective accident prevention program.
James P. Varney, serving the Fort Greely, Alaska, garrison, won the individual award for excellence in safety as a contractor for improving winter driving safety and cold weather injury awareness programs for Soldiers, Family members, Army Civilians and contractors new to the climate.

Located on the north end of San Francisco’s Baker Beach at just 45 feet above sea level, this battery was built during the latter part of San Francisco’s Endicott period construction program. Construction began in 1902 and the works were ready for gun installation in 1904. The battery features four gun emplacements originally designed for six-inch, rapid-fire guns on the disappearing carriages popular in that period.
Battery Chamberlin was operated in its original configuration of four guns from 1904 to 1917 for the mission of protecting the Golden Gate’s shipping lanes and mine fields. During World War I, the battery’s guns were dismounted and shipped east to serve in that conflict. In 1920, Battery Chamberlin mounted guns again – two six-inch guns on barbette carriages. These remained in service through World War II as Battery Chamberlin was among the six Endicott-era batteries that remained active through the end of that conflict.
In the current day the battery in unusual in that it has an actual gun – a six-inch artillery piece – mounted for display and demonstration (aiming not firing). The National Park Service has put together an informative single page handout on Battery Chamberlin.

The office of Acolyte is the last step in the process before ordination as Deacon. Our congratulations to Robert and his family on this occasion!

NPWS staff, Mark Hamilton, installing one of 14 weather stations at known infestations of Orange hawkweed in Kosciuszko National Park. They will provide valuable data for modelling seed/wind dispersal vectors which will assist with prioritising surveys for delimiting and eradicating Orange hawkweed from New South Wales. Murray Local Land Services provided the funding for these units.
