Insecurities pick at my insides every day. They softened up on me a bit so I could take this picture.

Benni is the sweetest, most snuggly boy. He loves to cuddle between my hubby and I at bedtime. Unfortunately, he's always been insecure around other dogs. This is not the best quality for a dog in a home that has different foster dogs coming and going. With each new dog, Benni seems to gain a little confidence but since he and Clay have had a few "altercations", Benni has become more nervous. Fortunately, we dealt with the aggression quickly and both boys are getting along well again. Whew! A house with five dogs always has some drama.

The Inter-Communal Dialogue and Conflict Mediation project in Jos started in January 2013. From January to July 2013, HD has held consultative meetings with five community groups namely the Afizere, Anaguta, Berom, Hausa and Fulani; Religious leaders; Federal and State Government and women and youth groups on the proposed project, as well as sought buy in for the proposed process.

The project, supported by the Canadian Government, has been geared towards achieving an agreement between the communities to end the dispute in Jos, and foster inter-communal co-operation leading to fewer incidents of violence. The Inter-communal dialogue and conflict mediation process itself, ‘The Jos Forum’, was launched in August 2013, with a formal opening ceremony attended by numerous members of the five communities, Federal and State Government officials, Religious leaders, women and youth groups, as well as civil society representatives.

HD successfully hosted seven dialogue sessions on various issues, including interim sessions to deal with the emerging tensions in Jos countryside.

For my conceptual series, I wanted to convey people's insecurities. Almost everyone has something they wish they didn't have, a flaw. Even if the flaw is irrelevant. Some people get so upset us with their flaw that they think it's the only thing a person notices about them. For my photos I wanted to show that an insecurity for someone isn't thought of as a bad thing for the people who see the flaw. I wanted to show that if you do not meet society's criteria of the perfect person, you often feel embarrassed about yourself. I went around and took photos of what people were most insecure about.

My first picture meets my series goals by having a photo of what my friend is most insecure about. He does not like how pudgy his veins are. It meets my goal by sharing that what we think is average or acceptable might be a huge insecurity for the person who has it because prominent veins are not viewed as a "beautiful" element.

My second picture meets my project goals by having a picture of my mom's eye. My mom is most insecure about her eyes because of how big she thinks they are. What we might think as beautiful, like big blue eyes, can be a insecurity for the person with bigger eyes, because most people do not have them.

My third photo meets my project goals by having a picture of my friend's lip. She is insecure about how big her lips are. This meets my project goals because most people won't think her lips are that big, or that they are average lips. To her it is her biggest insecurity, because bigger lips are not very popular.

My fourth photo meets my project goes by having the picture of my dad's hands. My dad is mostly insecure about his hands because he says they are too rough. While people who think his hands have interesting texture, he feels like that having large rough hands is a bad thing. Society portrays that boys are tough manly people and are not allowed to have insecurities

My fifth photo meets my project goals by showing my insecurity. My main insecurity is how big and broad my shoulders are. Society makes it seem that if a girl does not have feminine traits, like small, petite shoulders, she is not beautiful. Constant reassurance does not make the insecurity disappear. Society makes it seem like people who don't fit into the outline of society's "perfect person." are not beautiful.

Drought and conflict are the main factors that have exacerbated the problem of food production, distribution and access. High rates of population growth and poverty have also played a part, within an already difficult environment of fragile ecosystems. Installation detail shot (night)

Fly Gallery, early April 2008

In this photograph I decided to use the idea I had experimented with in my 9th shoot, using a mirror to create a reflection inside the glass ball. What I like about this photograph is the subtle black silhouettes of Rosie sat in depressed, mourning positions, as she looks in the mirror and feel nothing but sadness.

Tierpark Schönbrunn

Schönbrunn Zoo, Vienna

For this page, I started with black&white catalog image. I used Portfolio watersoluble oil pastels to create the green & blue background (inspired by peacock feathers!). Then I used black sumi ink to add the black stripes and details on the girl. I let the ink dry overnight (it can take a while) then journaled with white & black gel pens. I am THRILLED with this page. I wrote about my insecurities as an artist. (You can read the full text at the 30 Day Craft Cleanse group on Art Journaling -- it's completely free to sign up.)

Sometimes our insecurities and the comments people make become too much for us to handle...growing up I was bullied a lot, some of the things in the background were said about me, others were not. I used to have extremely low self esteem and would have to "grin and bear it" when all I wanted to do was fall apart... I took this picture so people will know that they're not alone. There's always someone out there who cares and is there for them no matter what, it always gets better.

lost and insecure, you found me, you found me.

Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?

Just a little late, you found me, you found me.

Right now, that's my favourite song ever. I love it so much. The emotion honestly makes me cry, kay well almost.

The light in my bedroom was being really nice today and everything turned out nice, I think anyways. Do you like my little green furry monster in the corner? That would be my lovely carpet in my room. Yeah...didn't know it was there.
