Insecurity in rural Darfur however means that more keep on moving into camps for the displaced thus increasing humanitarian needs. EC/ECHO/Daniel Dickinson

If I could describe myself with one word. It would be insecure. Because I am.

God found me

Day 155

Oh wow I am SO pale. The processing made me look more pale than I really am though.

This is so weird. Hmmm.

Willem Witsen: Hidden Power

Unassuming and insecure. But also: friend for life, multitalented and pivotal figure in a network of artists and writers. Whereas contemporaries such as George Hendrik Breitner and Isaac Israels focused on the liveliness of the city, Willem Witsen sought out stillness. His best paintings, drawings and etchings exude atmosphere and intimacy. A century after his death, his subdued oeuvre has fallen into oblivion. High time for this hidden power to step out of the shadows.

Willem Witsen: Hidden Power presents Willem Witsen as a versatile artist. He painted, photographed, made etchings and wrote – disciplines that are closely connected to each other within his oeuvre. His paintings are realistic, with a remarkably smooth touch; his etchings are sharp and refined. Compared to the work of his friends Israels and Breitner, his differs in that it features unusual points of view and, above all, a moody, sometimes even mysterious atmosphere.

At least as important in this exhibition is the introduction to Witsen as a person. How did he become a key figure in the 19th-century network of artists and writers known as ‘De Tachtigers’ (‘The Eightiers’) For writer Willem Kloos, Witsen was a tower of strength. His friendship with artist George Hendrik Breitner even culminated with a shared grave. And what was the (so often neglected) role of the women in the group, such as Anna Witsen and Lucie Broedelet?

The combination of art, photos and letters presented here gives a splendid picture of his career and a unique insight into his personal life. For this occasion, works of art from Museum Jan Cunen’s permanent collection have not only been supplemented with top pieces from the Rijksmuseum and the Kröller-Müller Museum, but also from the Literatuurmuseum (Museum of Literature) and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands).

Witsen in Oss

Why now, and why in Museum Jan Cunen? Ever since the 1950s, we have made an active effort to collect 19th-century art here in Oss. This led to a particularly rich subcollection, which put the museum on the map and also plays a role in the new, highly acclaimed presentation of highlights from the collection as a whole, Villa Curiossa. After various retrospectives, such as Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch (1999) and Willem Roelofs (2007) and the group exhibition Haagse School x Haagse Nieuwe (2020), it is high time for a new exhibition on an important 19th-century artist. And what better place to do so than in the museum’s villa from 1888, the perfect setting for this late-19th-century story of an artist’s life?

Nico Dijkshoorn

During the exhibition, Willem will also have a contemporary friend. Author, musician and columnist Nico Dijkshoorn wrote a dozen letters to the artist, based on his paintings, etchings, friendships and the original correspondence. Did he manage to build up a friendship across time? Listen to a recording of the letters in an audio tour and find out.

Malawi, Muona, Nsanje District, 24 March 2020

In March 2019, rural farmers in Muona have seen their crops washed away by Cyclone Idai. WFP responded at that time with immediate support.

However, as food stocks depleted and as the next harvest is only expected in March 2020, WFP in Malawi has distributed monthly cash transfers to the most vulnerable so they can buy food and boost the local economy.

In the Photo: WFP is distributing Cash to food insecure people in Muona, Nsanje District (Southern Malawi) so they can buy food in the local markets.

As prevention measures for COVID-19, the beneficiaries are called by small group to facilitate distancing, received sensitization messages on the virus through the megaphones, are asked to wash hands with soap before and after getting their entitlements. In addition, staff and volunteers in charge of the distributions are using protecting masks and gloves.

Over the course of my life, my eyes have been a conflicting force in my life, serving as both a source pride and embarrassment, joy and frustration. I have what's called Coloboma, meaning that my irises failed to close during my carefree days in the womb (supposedly I was too busy kicking to worry about such things). It's a birth defect, and it looks weird. Some have only one eye like this, but I'm the lucky kind who have plural cat eyes.

I caught a lot of shit in my formative years for my eyes looking different. Constantly. I grew up avoiding eye contact during conversations as a way to get around it. Even when someone thought it was cool, it still embarrassed me or annoyed me when an important conversation got derailed by a five-minute "what the fuck?" tangent. I, like many kids, just wanted to fit in, a normal enough teenage desire. It wasn't until I got to college and someone pointed out my lack of eye contact that I began to reconsider my stance. Clearly, it wasn't going to work in adult life.

Now that I'm older and more secure about myself, they've turned into a source of pride. The tangents still get old when I'm in a hurry, but it doesn't really bother me. I like being different. As a result, I'm posting this as much for me as for anyone else. It's kind of a declaration that I'm finally ok with my eyes being weird. And, even if you don't like them, my eye doctor thinks they're fascinating.

I feel like they took all my insecurities

Just ripped them out of my heart

It's like I'm stripped of everything important to me

Like all my wounds revealed

For the world to see

I feel naked

Nowhere left to hide

He said, “Migrants are mostly encouraged by their friends and families. They think they will have a very nice and comfortable life, but nothing like these is true.”

Economic growth has slowed down considerably, unemployment is on the rise, and the ongoing insecurity hampers investment. All these provoke many of the talented and educated Afghans to migrate.

Part of my project titled identity. This image explores feelings of insecurity through someone who is ashamed of their appearance.

This image was inspired by Gillian Wearing in which I developed her idea further by writing the feelings and emotions of the model across their body in order to establish the basis of the insecurities felt.

Having been accustomed to the emotions and actions of those with illnesses such as anorexia and low self esteem due to my relationships with people who suffer with these issues, I found this section of my project very intriguing to undertake.

Drought and conflict are the main factors that have exacerbated the problem of food production, distribution and access. High rates of population growth and poverty have also played a part, within an already difficult environment of fragile ecosystems.
