My mother gives me these venus flytrap plant as a birthday gift. Never would I know that this is a carnivorous plant and seeing it eating insects amazes me. It is an unusual plant that not everyone could see and know.

Cardinal beetle (En), Zwartkopvuurkever (Nl) - Loetbos

wikipedia:

The cardinal beetle (Pyrochroa serraticornis) is a red to orange beetle with a red head. It is approximately 20 mm long. The Black-headed Cardinal beetle (Pyrochroa coccinea) is larger and a deeper blood red.

The cardinal beetle preys on other insects and is normally found on flowers at the edges of woodland.

The cardinal beetle is a strong flier. The cardinal beetle is bright red; in that way it warns predators that it is toxic.

People often mistake the smaller Scarlet lily beetle, Lilioceris lilii, for a cardinal beetle.

This fly refused to cooperate in the project of getting out of the room - so at least I was able to take some pics ;-)

Waiting impatiently for these great posers to return. Winter has been loooong this year. Pachydiplax longipennis, Libellulidae. Central IL, Summer 2012.

I just got one shot of this busy bee and worst of all, I was using a manual Nikkor 55mm lens...I had to be so close, accurate and fast. That kept me worried the entire day about the final output. Thankfully, it came out just fine.
