Austrolestes leda is a native species of damselfly in the family Lestidae.

The native range is the east of the country. They like to be around slow or still water.

Pretty little thing. This is a female, I think perhaps immature.

Around 35 mm length.

I assumed this is a butterfly in the fritillary family, but I am not a butterfly expert. It just visited when I was taking pictures.

Here's another portrait of a Mantis that I photographed in September of last year.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F14, 1/200, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to about 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Denoise AI and Clarity in that order.

Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve

Hier habe ich heute eine Südliche Binsenjungfer geknipst :)

the ornamental grasses must be producing something sweet for a stretch there because there was a lot of ant activity, which made for some fun photo sessions

backyard capture in chesterfield

Love these little guys :) Only had a small hatch number but hopefully enough to secure another generation.

Found this tiny little beetle in the comfort of my back yard, still adjusting to my new macro lens but so far loving it!

Snack time today ....

The bumblebee he did word of mouth to butterfly !!!!

I found this 22 Spot Ladybug covered in dew on one of the Sunflowers last summer. Image taken in Lago Patria, Italy in July of 2021.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to over 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering with -1/3 FEC). This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is a 4x shot of a Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio machaon) that I raised from a kit. After photographing the critter I released her into my yard. Image taken in Bacoli, Italy in May of 2020.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 4x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.

I must have caught this female Sweat Bee right as she started foraging for Sourgrass pollen because she does not have any on her abdomen. Image taken in Bacoli, Italy in April of 2020.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to about 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT, E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC. This is a single, slightly cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Clarity, and Denoise AI in that order.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had another early morning session with a European Wool Carder Bee (Anthidium florentinum) that was snoozing in my Lavender. This one has a lot of scratches on its eyes, and that happens when they clean them due to the barbs that they have on their legs. For this shot I focused on the leading edge of the bee's mandibles and then twisted my wrist to push the top of the frame deeper into the scene. The result is a "magic angle" that creates the illusion that there is a lot of depth.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to under 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Denoise AI and Clarity in that order. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

One from back in May that I haven't had identified. If you can help, please add a comment. HFDF

One the end of a wooden park bench where lovers meet. Not sure what these two very tiny flies are. They were so small, I hadn't realised there were actually two until I got them focused with the macro lens. With insect populations under a relentless human siege, these two are doing good work. Keep going you two and don't mind the camera lens.

This female Sweat Bee is using her mandibles to strip pollen out of a Sourgrass anther and then with her legs she pushes the pollen down to her abdomen.

Sweat Bees in Sourgrass Deconstruction

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (almost 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order. I was holding on to the flower's stem with my left hand, and then resting the lens on that same hand to help keep the scene steady. Easier to do on days when it's windy since the vibrations that I create when I grab onto the flower are masked by the breeze.

OM System OM-1 + M.Zuiko 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO + Godox V860iii + Cygnustech flash diffuser - 49 shots focus stacked

Last year I bought a kit so I could raise some Swallowtail Butterflies (Papilio machaon). The critter was so cooperative that I am still editing images from a single photo session. Image taken in Bacoli, Italy in May of 2020.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to around 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). Six Spot Burnet N00230 Watchtree Nature Reserve D210bob DSC_3888

Looks as though this one has just emerged from the chrysalis. It was clambering around to get into full sun. The wings still not stretched and fully formed. I could only count 4 legs, so there may yet be a smaller pair still folded nearer the head, or they may not have formed. I hadn't realised butterflies have such a low success rate peer 100 eggs laid.

A praying mantis on an amaltas flower

This is an early morning shot of a Hoverfly that was more hungry than afraid. Also the first field test of a new diffuser set that I built for the macro twin flash.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to a little over 1x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Denoise AI and Clarity in that order.

“Who can explain the secret pathos of Nature's loveliness? It is a touch of melancholy inherited from our mother Eve. It is an unconscious memory of the lost Paradise. It is the sense that even if we should find another Eden, we would not be fit to enjoy it perfectly nor stay in it forever.”

~Henry Van Dyke
