The University of Hawaii Insect Museum (UHIM) is one of the oldest and most important collections of Hawaiian insects in the U.S., with over 240,000 pinned specimens, a large number of which are between 50 and 100 years old and represent irreplaceable material due to widespread habitat alteration and extinctions across the Hawaiian archipelago. The UHIM began shortly after the founding of the University of Hawaii in 1908, as entomology professors developed a teaching collection. The UHIM served as the base for the seminal evolutionary research program on Hawaiian Drosophila that connected dozens of institutions, and involved more than 500 undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral researchers as well as more than 70 senior scientists. There have been at least 400 peer reviewed papers as a result of the project, which is still ongoing. Consequently, with over 78,000 pinned and identified specimens, the UHIM has the most comprehensive Hawaiian Drosophila collection in the world, and it includes many rare and possibly extinct taxa and historically important specimens. The UHIM serves as a center for insect identification and systematics-based research. It has the workspace, equipment, and resources for detailed taxonomic analysis, and researchers from many different laboratories are able to work and interact under its auspices. A close association with the extensive collections and staff of the Bishop Museum greatly enhances this interactive museum community. The UHIM has holdings of virtually every family of insects occurring in Hawaii, both native and introduced. The pinned insect specimens alone include 4080 identified species, and many more awaiting identification. Older collection records help establish patterns of decline and disappearance for different insect species, and may help pinpoint those factors that have led to the declines. The museum also houses synoptic pest collections for most crops of agricultural importance including historical collections indicating the presence, absence and patterns of invasion for newly introduced insects. This part of the collection is invaluable for tracking the spread of new invasive insects and the effectiveness of control efforts for current and historical invasions.

Calosoma scrutator. Apparently hunts caterpillars. This is one of the more colorful N. American beetles. It was moving pretty fast and I wanted to get a shot of the head and thorax, hence the bad angle.

The phasmid diversity in Borneo was pretty incredible, its difficult to say how many species I encountered but I'd say more than in any other place I have spent time in. This was a cool species, very heavy bodied and spiky as you can see here. This one was photographed as found as it munched on a leaf. I came across this species multiple times during my night hikes, I don't recall if I ever saw any during the day.

Pitfall-style insect interceptors can be used to monitor for bed bugs. However, monitors can pick up other arthropods as well. For more information on bed bug management, visit: nysipm.cornell.edu/whats-bugging-you/bed-bugs
