The children painted with worms (rubber); made a squish painting to show the mirror image of what they painted; made a super cute tissue snail and an insect crayon rubbing. The children then explored several sensory stations. Magnets; rings; fidget toys; sensory bins were multi-colored rice with lizards, dinosaur skeleton dig, fresh made play dough. Taken last Spring. Lily of the Valley is very popular with small birds such as the waxeye, bees, butterflys etc. This is not surprising when you view what is attracting them.

I don't know what this moth is. It was certainly very big. It's underneath a sun umbrella.

Update: I believe this is a Hawk Moth

My father saw this weird insect outside our house. At first we thought it was just a normal ant carrying something, but then it turned out those furry thingies were part of his body.

The shadows of a insect - Originally I thought that I could make the shadows long and dramatic. But it was such a delicate little insect that even my strong craft light did not have that effect.

Some of the insect-life on Dongtou, Zhejiang, China. Not sure what insects these are, they are about the size of a badger's penis or an adult human's thumb.

It's not summertime in Texas unless a mosquito is sucking the life out of you.

It is on the outside of our kitchen window. Taken by Edgar.

I went to Indonesia with my family and some friends of the family for 3 weeks. I'll be posting some of the drawings I did there. We spent the first 3 nights of the trip in 4 boats, going down a river in Tanjung Puting National Park and stop to visit villages and the Orangutans. This is a drawing I did of an insect I found on the boat.

Lasioglossum sp. - Halictidae

Robber Flies are medium to large hunting flies with long strong legs used to catch prey on flight. They have large eyes, and distinct "neck" between the head and abdomen. The abdomen is long and thin. Most species have a beard of stiff bristles (called setae) around the proboscis. Most Robber Flies are brown or reddish-brown in colour. The eyes are large and in some species are reflective. Some species can give people a painful bite. Also known as the Assassin Fly or Bee Killer.

Size

typical size is about 25mm

Food

Adults prey on insects and spiders and can catch insects in flight. Robber Fly larvae feed on soft-bodied insects and other insect larvae.

Breeding

Females lay cream coloured eggs on plants or in soil, bark, or wood. The larvae live in the soil or in rotting wood where they pupate.

I can fit three in my hand. They are very sluggish insects and hardly responded to me picking them up. They seem near death.
