I took advantage of the weather today and went for a walk with my camera. In a garden in the town centre, I was shooting some plants and flowers when I came across this little fella. I have no idea what it is - it's definitely not a bee or wasp or fly. But the mosquito-like long 'snout' is very pronounced. I took many pictures of it, and it didn't seem to care that I was there (my lens was only about 1ft away from it - if that) and just went about its business.
I love this shot, although its not got the best depth-of-field (the back of it is out of focus) but you can see how fast the wings are buzzing as they are such a blur (and this is at 1/1000th of a second!) as well as the clarity of the hairs on the front of the insect and its snout buried in the pollen'ey goodness of the flower there.
If anyone can ID this little guy that'd be great!

With the butterfly bush finally blooming, I was prompted to break out my Nikon for the first time this year. Not a fantastic image (I think my lens is trying to retire) but it felt good to get out.
Taken yesterday in the Elan valley. Having taken a landscape shot or two I returned to the car and this fly obligingly landed on a side window. I got nice and close.
I have cleaned the window since. HBBBT!
