Discarded Christmas trees once again provide light, and this time heat as well. The fire department collects the trees for a small donation and then in late January sets the pile ablaze to the delight of children (and photographers) amongst the hundreds of onlookers. There was no wind on this 20 degree night so the flames got high. Flames look amazing when you freeze them in a photograph. I've applied my "Inner Light" process to this image.

Ma ecco la cosa straordinaria: la luce scaccia il buio, sempre. Tu pianti una candela

nell'oscurità, ma non puoi piantare il buio nella luce.

An excellent location to teach my photography class a little practical shooting. A sunny afternoon with plenty of light (sometimes too much) to practice the "exposure triangle".

One of my most favorited roses... and I love the name of this kind.

I started with a dictionary (under the egg) to give elevation and a brown t-shirt. Brown because the original shot idea was going to have a more complex lighting setup and I wanted a dirt feeling without going outside.. cause I'm lazy today.

Hurley is being elevated and held in place with one of my favorite photographic tools - a Helping Hand (with an LED light) This is normally used for hobbyists and electricians, but I find it insanely helpful with setups such as this.. especially considering this Hurley doesn't have flat feet.

So, I was busy working on the shot with more lighting when my wife called me for supper.. a moment of frustration washed over me as I realized the sun was setting and that after dinner the light would be gone. I left it anyway.. and when I returned realized that if I just simply rather than over-complicate, it'd look better. Instead of having the LED shine up towards Hurley's face, I twisted it around behind the egg to back-light the egg. Not only that, but the reflected shine illumiated Hurley quite nicely too..

So, ya.. this is where my history comes in. I've always specialized in low-light and available light setups. This is right up my alley with a one light (one LED) shot. No other light sources.

Mom & I went to New Orleans, LA in March 2008. I attended a conference. These are a few of the extra pictures from the trip.

It is the Piazza d'italia behind the Loews New Orleans Hotel on Poydras Street. I could see it from my hotel window which was on the backside of the building.

A wonderful find in the vinyard... the vineleaves are unfolding all over. This one was glowing in and with the morning sun!

Longing for summer colors!
