Chain Up

Prisoners are cuffed and chained before being escorted to their court hearings. IN this instance, C/O's use cuffs, belly chain, leg shackles and a drop chain to connect all of it together.

A little too intimate/a little too infinite at Boron Federal Minimum Security Prison. Abandoned since 2001, so it's had a chance to air out, but it was still pretty funky in this building. I liked the full moon light and shadows coming in from the left, so I went out and mirrored it with red light from the right, and came back inside to gently cross-fill the mattress shadows with green, specifically to make your eyeballs vibrate. Protomachines flashlight, but mostly, it was 285 seconds of stumbling around in the dark. Several times, to get it right.

At my sentencing hearing, I told the judge. Sir. I'm sorry for what I did. There is no excuse for my actions. I stand before you in this bright orange inmate uniform, my arms chained to the waist and ask you to hand down my punishment. I deserve it.

Inmates waiting on line for the mess hall can see paintings depicting flag raisings at Iwo Jima and NYC's World Trade Center ruins.

Medium-high security inmates get bright yellow uniforms for better visibility and rigid handcuffs for security reasons whenever they are allowed to leave their cell. So be prepared for the front stack experience!

The restraints and the bagy prison khakis aren't too bad after all, once you've fully embraced your new identity as a scumbag thug, locked away right where he belongs.

Prisoner in shackles

The feeling of 1.2 kg of cold steel around your wrists and ankles sure is humbling...

County Jail Inmate in black and white uniform

You don't see green and white stripes that often, but they match perfectly with bright orange. In combination with full restraints, you will be easily recognizable as an inmate. Everyone will stare at you when you shuffle in that outfit to court. You are perhaps the most interesting person in the whole courtroom.

L to R:

Doctor Jeremiah Arkham: I've always been interested in this character, and I liked the Hugo Strange head on him.

Great White Shark AKA Warren White: This has been done to death not too much to say here. I used the Arkham look because it reminded me of when he ran his gang out of the Asylum.

Ten-Eyed Man AKA Philip Reardon: I want to change the hair later, but I thought the head showed his blindness well.

Calendar Man AKA Julian Day: I really like what's been done with this character. I based this off of his Arkham and Long Halloween look.

Amygdala AKA Aaron Helzinger: I tried to draw scars from his surgery on subtly.

Doctor Double X AKA Doctor Simon Ecks: I didn't have the pieces to make his whole costume but I like the helmet a lot.

Let me know what you think!

I caught a glimpse of a shady character inside the jail house in Pinoeertown while I was trying to take a photo of this old west building. The entire town used to be a movie set for western movies in the past. It 's quite interesting to look around.

A range of styles and colours for the most discerning inmate...

When going to court, most people would dress in their best Sunday clothes. But as an inmate, you won't have a choice unless you actually face a jury. So you may be the only person in the whole courtroom wearing a bright orange jumpsuit. When you stand there in handcuffs, arms stacked and belted to your waist, you perhaps feel embarrassed. But you should not. You are perhaps the most interesting person in the whole courtroom. It makes you look tough.

Belly chains with the handcuffs attached at the side are perfect for low or medium risk inmates. These chains still allow some movement, e. g. for signing court papers or pointing at pieces of evidence during testimony, though restricting arm motion to prevent the prisoner from butting or hitting. When using such a belly chain to restrain high-risk inmates, the detainee can also be shackled with his arms crossed so that the left wrist is placed in the cuff on the right side of his waist and vice versa.
