From a fortress initiated in the 10th century, the castle was modified in the 18th century to add a set of more comfortable rooms, then in the 19th to give it the appearance of iconic castle as imagined by Viollet le Duc (turrets, etc.).

The initiator of this meet told me he hadn't slept for several nights to get all these engines at Amersfoort... Well, the result was great. Four engines of the former NS 1600 class came to Amersfoort to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Present were RRF 4401 & 4402 (RRF is a G&W subsidiary), RFO 1829 and TCS 1635. In the background are some other former 1600 class engines, that now run for open access freight operators.

Italy, Venice, Burano,… a fiesta of colours & light, the island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon is situated 7 kilometres from Venice, known for its lacework & for its small, brightly-painted houses. To reach the island with a population of around four thousand, takes about a 60 minutes trip by Venetian motorboats, "Vaporetti".
The warm myriad of Mediterranean colours that characterises the houses on the island, follow a detailed system initiated at the golden era of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the island government, who will respond by making notice of certain colours permitted for that lot.
📌 …Burano, before the island became a tourist fascination, originally the painting of the houses in strong bright colours had a very practical, safety & path-breaking reason.
When the fishermen with their boats & their catch of the day returned to the island of Burano, they could focus & locate on foggy days the island better because of the colourful houses.

That name was too tempting considering the milky way but to be clear, for the local Aboriginal people the cultural significance of the giant boulders of Karlu Karlu has nothing to do with the Rainbow Serpent.
One of the Dreaming stories that can be told to the uninitiated visitors implies the figure of Arrange, the Devil Man, who worn a hair-string belt as a traditional adornment for the initiated men. While he was twirling the hair to make strings he dropped clusters of hair on the ground, which turned into the rock boulders.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and is considered to be the key for worship in the country.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure which unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art. His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the same mosque. The mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2007. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. The mosque site is equivalent to the size five football fields approximately.
As the country's grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. During Eid it can be visited by more than 40,000 people.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque's design and construction 'unites the world', using artisans and materials from many countries including Italy, Germany, Morocco, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Greece and United Arab Emirates. More than 3,000 workers and 38 renowned contracting companies took part in the construction of the mosque. Natural materials were chosen for much of its design and construction due to their long-lasting qualities, including marble stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics. It was built by the Italian company Impregilo.
The design of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque has been inspired by Persian, Mughal and Moorish mosque architecture, particularly the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan and the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco being direct influences. The dome layout and floorplan of the mosque was inspired by the Badshahi Mosque and the architecture was inspired by Persian, Mughal and Moorish design. Its archways are quintessentially Moorish and its minarets classically Arab. The design of the mosque can be best described as a fusion of Arab, Persian, Mughal and Moorish architecture.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has many special and unique elements: The carpet in the main prayer hall is considered to be the world's largest carpet made by Iran's Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi. This carpet measures 5,627 m2 (60,570 sq ft), and was made by around 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters. The weight of this carpet is 35 ton and is predominantly made from wool (originating from New Zealand and Iran). There are 2,268,000,000 knots within the carpet and it took approximately two years to complete.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers from Germany that incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier is the second largest known chandelier inside a mosque, the third largest in the world and has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height.
The pools along the arcades reflect the mosque's spectacular columns, which becomes even more glorious at night. The unique lightning system was designed by lightning architects Jonathon Speirs and Major to reflect the phases of the moon. Beautiful bluish gray clouds are projected in lights onto the external walls and get brighter and darker according to the phase of the moon.
The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl, one of the few places where you will see this craftsmanship.
The 99 names (qualities or attributes) of God (Allah) are featured on the Qibla wall in traditional Kufic calligraphy, designed by the prominent UAE calligrapher - Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi. The Qibla wall also features subtle fibre-optic lighting, which is integrated as part of the organic design.
In total, three calligraphy styles – Naskhi, Thuluth and Kufic – are used throughout the mosque and were drafted by Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi of the UAE, Farouk Haddad of Syria and Mohammed Allam of Jordan.

Parque Central Cespedes, Trinidad, Cuba.
Plaza Carrillo, currently named Parque Cespedes, is located in the southern part of the city of Trinidad, in the most modern area. It was founded in 1818 as Market Square by the architect Manuel Pastor, originally had an iron gazebo. On one of its sides is the Church of San Francisco de Paula.
The Carrillo Square is named in honor of the governor Pedro Carrillo de Albornoz who was the initiator of this project.
its a dogs life
the phrase initiated in the 16th century when dogs would guard homes and small communities, were fed scraps, slept outside and had short lives. so it meant life wasn't good.
whereas today dogs are well fed, groomed, pampered, sleep inside and live longer, so it now means a good life.
I had breakfast in bed and lay around the house all day. its a dogs life.

The Museum opened in 1901 was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend in the Arts and Crafts style. It is packed with displays of anthropology from around the globe. It has a collection of musical instruments and natural history. It has an aquarium, an activity centre. Also there are gardens, a butterfly house, an enclosure for small animals.
There are also a number of other buildings, two that are Grade II listed. The first, a conservatory, built in 1894 for the Horniman family and secondly, a bandstand with overlooks the London skyline. The conservatory reminds me of the Palm House at Kew (although much smaller) built by Richard Turner.
Frederick John Horniman had inherited his father’s tea business and was in the late 19th century, the world’s largest tea company. It was he that initiated the building of the museum. He had some thirty thousand items in his personal collection. The museum now has something in the region of three hundred and thirty thousand pieces.
If you travel diagonally right across the park you can visit Dulwich Picture Gallery, another worthwhile venue.

Sobieski park and Florist garden.
The Florists’ Gardens are certainly among the most beautiful green areas of the Brussels region. Hosting old greenhouses from the time of Leopold II who has initiated this park, the Florist’s Gardens also offer a magnificent view on the city and are a harbor of piece close to one of the most visited attractions of Brussels, the Atomium.
Sobieski park is the Park adjoining the Colonial Garden and the Florists' Garden.
The Florists’ Gardens can be reached via the Sobieski park (close to metro Stuyvenbergh).

Photogravure
Louis XIV. initiated the project to build Les Invalides by an order dated 24 November 1670. The history of this beautiful site has been long and tumultuous to say the least. For me I was immediately struck in the same way I found myself being amazed by sites all over Paris. The age, grandeur, and beauty of the buildings and grounds feel overwhelming and perfect at the same time. As a photographer I found myself once again searching out a small detail or glimpse that embodied the feelings I had in the moment.
After developing the film in my darkroom I noticed the perfect silhouette of a blackbird that volunteered to model for my picture.
The 5th and final image in the "Frame by Frame" Challenge initiated by Paul B0udreau. We each created pieces connected to the songs and instrumentals of the rather dark and powerful progressive rock band King Crimson. Then we posted them alternately back and forth, often not knowing which song the other was going to chose. There were a few synchronicities, which was fun.
At the outset Paul had suggested that the images be in the "portrait" format and I took that word a step further and decided to work with my own face ( for convenience mostly ) and created some "portraits" in the challenge. Working with "portraits" I then thought it fit if I wrapped them each in a picture frame, like formal salon paintings - "Frame by Frame".
King Crimson's music is NOT for everyone, not by a long shot and so I'm confident that not a lot of people were really keen on the music links. As an artist though, I find it periodically VERY beneficial to step off my main track and produce work that's, perhaps, a bit more rigorous, sometimes dark, or just plain right off the wall. It helps me to stretch my range.
The song, "Red", is dark and very heavy but I chose not to be so dark in the image. It is intense, as the original Crimson album cover ( the back ) from which this song hails, suggests - a meter going into the "red". But my image doesn't intend to be so "apocalyptic". It also frames the series, connecting back to the first submission, "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream" both in format and in theme.
I want to thank Paul for coming up with this wonderful two-person challenge. His pieces in the series are beautifully composed and full of light, a wonderful counterpoint to mine.

The initiator of this meet told me he hadn't slept for several nights to get all these engines at Amersfoort... Well, the result was great. Four engines of the former NS 1600 class came to Amersfoort to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Present were RRF 4401 & 4402 (RRF is a G&W subsidiary), RFO 1829 and TCS 1635. In the background are some other former 1600 class engines, that now run for open access freight operators.
Initiates into the Santeria religion dress only in white for the first year of their initiation and are called by the name Iyabo rather than by their given names, regardless of gender. The area that was to become West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870s and 1880s by a few hundred settlers who called the vicinity "Lake Worth Country." These settlers were a diverse community from different parts of the United States and the world. They included founding families such at the Potters and the Lainharts, who would go on to become leading members of the business community in the fledgling city. The first white settlers in Palm Beach County lived around Lake Worth, then an enclosed freshwater lake, named for Colonel William Jenkins Worth, who had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1842. Most settlers engaged in the growing of tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment the north via Lake Worth and the Indian River. By 1890, the U.S. Census counted over 200 people settled along Lake Worth in the vicinity of what would become West Palm Beach. The area at this time also boasted a hotel, the "Cocoanut House", a church, and a post office. The city was platted by Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants working in the two grand hotels on the neighboring island of Palm Beach, across Lake Worth in 1893, coinciding with the arrival of the Florida East Coast railroad. Flagler paid two area settlers, Captain Porter and Louie Hillhouse, a combined sum of $45,000 for the original town site, stretching from Clear Lake to Lake Worth.
On November 5, 1894, 78 people met at the "Calaboose" (the first jail and police station located at Clematis St. and Poinsettia, now Dixie Hwy.) and passed the motion to incorporate the Town of West Palm Beach in what was then Dade County (now Miami-Dade County). This made West Palm Beach the first incorporated municipality in Dade County and in South Florida. The town council quickly addressed the building codes and the tents and shanties were replaced by brick, brick veneer, and stone buildings. The city grew steadily during the 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th century, most residents were engaged in the tourist industry and related services or winter vegetable market and tropical fruit trade. In 1909, Palm Beach County was formed by the Florida State Legislature and West Palm Beach became the county seat. In 1916, a new neo-classical courthouse was opened, which has been painstakingly restored back to its original condition, and is now used as the local history museum.
The city grew rapidly in the 1920s as part of the Florida land boom. The population of West Palm Beach quadrupled from 1920 to 1927, and all kinds of businesses and public services grew along with it. Many of the city's landmark structures and preserved neighborhoods were constructed during this period. Originally, Flagler intended for his Florida East Coast Railway to have its terminus in West Palm, but after the area experienced a deep freeze, he chose to extend the railroad to Miami instead.
The land boom was already faltering when city was devastated by the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. The Depression years of the 1930s were a quiet time for the area, which saw slight population growth and property values lower than during the 1920s. The city only recovered with the onset of World War II, which saw the construction of Palm Beach Air Force Base, which brought thousands of military personnel to the city. The base was vital to the allied war effort, as it provided an excellent training facility and had unparalleled access to North Africa for a North American city. Also during World War II, German U-Boats sank dozens of merchant ships and oil tankers just off the coast of West Palm Beach. Nearby Palm Beach was under black out conditions to minimize night visibility to German U-boats.
The 1950s saw another boom in population, partly due to the return of many soldiers and airmen who had served in the vicinity during the war. Also, the advent of air conditioning encouraged growth, as year-round living in a tropical climate became more acceptable to northerners. West Palm Beach became the one of the nation's fastest growing metropolitan areas during the 1950s; the city's borders spread west of Military Trail and south to Lake Clarke Shores. However, many of the city's residents still lived within a narrow six-block wide strip from the south to north end. The neighborhoods were strictly segregated between White and African-American populations, a legacy that the city still struggles with today. The primary shopping district remained downtown, centered around Clematis Street.
In the 1960s, Palm Beach County's first enclosed shopping mall, the Palm Beach Mall, and an indoor arena were completed. These projects led to a brief revival for the city, but in the 1970s and 1980s crime continued to be a serious issue and suburban sprawl continued to drain resources and business away from the old downtown area. By the early 1990s there were very high vacancy rates downtown, and serious levels of urban blight.
Since the 1990s, developments such as CityPlace and the preservation and renovation of 1920s architecture in the nightlife hub of Clematis Street have seen a downtown resurgence in the entertainment and shopping district. The city has also placed emphasis on neighborhood development and revitalization, in historic districts such as Northwood, Flamingo Park, and El Cid. Some neighborhoods still struggle with blight and crime, as well as lowered property values caused by the Great Recession, which hit the region particularly hard. Since the recovery, multiple new developments have been completed. The Palm Beach Mall, located at the Interstate 95/Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard interchange became abandoned as the downtown was revitalized - the very mall that initiated the original abandonment of the downtown. The mall was then redeveloped into the Palm Beach Fashion Outlets in February 2014. A station for All Aboard Florida, a high-speed passenger rail service serving Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, is under construction as of July 2015.

* What's the name of the person in the picture? Debbie
* Who is he/she? Debbie was a fan of one of the buskers (Martin, a Cellist) that I was photographing, they seemed to have an understanding because she stood there complimenting his music and it drew in a crowd. You can probably see in her eyes that she gave off a very kind a good natured vibe.
* How did you meet? We met after I approached Martin and asked if I could photograph him, then standing around together, Debbie and I took an interest in one another.
* What did you talk about? We talked about the weather and how great it was that it was finally warming up, I told her she had nice eyes and I would like to take a photograph of her, she obliged shyly and let me take two photographs.
* New photography technique? Not really. I really like the Zeiss 50mm for clear portraiture. It helps to use a wider aperture when manually focusing so as to not miss the opportunity. Sometimes I feel like it has more to do with luck because there have been many times when I feel like I have it tack on, then the depth of field is a foot in front of the subject.
* Your approach style... My approach was to actually get the busker, and I will post him in the strangers project as well but Debbies portrait came out a lot better. In the process of getting to know Martin, I got to know Debbie, which was an awesome and fortuitous consequence from initiating contact. Having a business card with me was essential, it assures them they can get a copy of the photo if they want, and they also know who I am.
* An observation... I always get caught up in the cloud of excitement when the moment for a good picture comes around, my technical knowledge falls off and it has been critical for me to admit when I haven't gotten the shot and ask for another chance to get it - that has been hard for me because it takes courage to admit you don't get it on the first try. This picture of Debbie is the result of asking for another chance, and I'm sure glad I did.
