The legend of the four stripes is the legend that explains the origin of the flag and the shield of Catalonia, first appeared in 1551 in the second part of the General Chronicle of Spain.
The story explains that the origins of the flag are in Guifré el Pilós, the last count of Barcelona appointed by the Frankish kings, and the first to give inherit their domains, initiating the Dynasty Counts of Barcelona.
Specifically, is told that the four stripes were created after a battle against the Normans, when the Frankish king dip his hand in a open wound of Guifré el Pilós, and then he passed all four fingers above the golden shield of the Count of Barcelona. With this act was created the shield of the House of Barcelona, symbol of the new sovereign conquered, and, over the years, this four red stripes become the Catalan flag.
Now, the Catalan flag is composed by 4 red vertical stripes, that are the blood of Guifré el Pilós, and between each red stripe, there is a yellow one, that symbolizes the shield of the Count.

I decided to bring out my inner Shaman after visiting Enchantment's current round. Because I'm awkward I'm wearing Static's Evil Mistress Mantle as part of the headdress for an authentic Shamanistic look. Add to that Neferkalum's Uninvited around the eyes and brows and Spiritus for the neck and shoulders and Contraption's horns I was ready to face whatever the spirits of the dead could throw at me. However, I ended up running into the sea yelling 'woooo!' instead because I'm like, six years old or something...

Sandhyavandana (Sanskrit: संध्यावन्दन, sandhyāvandana) is a mandatory religious ritual performed, traditionally, by Dvija communities of Hindus[citation needed], particularly those initiated through the sacred thread ceremony referred to as the Upanayanam and instructed in its execution by a Guru, in this case one qualified to teach Vedic ritual. The Sandhyavandanam consists of recitation from the Vedas, accompanied by ritual. These rituals are performed three times a day- at morning (prātaḥsaṃdhyā), noon (mādhyāhnika) and evening (sāyaṃsaṃdhyā).
The Sandhyavandanam is the oldest extant liturgy in world religion. As a practice, it may be descended from the much older daily Agnihotra ritual.
Sandhyavandanam literally means "salutation to Sandhya". Sandhya, in turn, has traditionally been interpreted either as "the transition moments of the day" (namely the two twilights dawn and dusk), or as "the solar noon". Thus, Sandhyavandanam may be defined as the ritual "salutation to twilight or the solar noon".
Christ initiates his people into his work. The term “liturgy” comes from leitourgia, which meant a work (ergeia) done by a few on behalf of a people (laos). Christ did a work for the reconciliation of mankind, and that work is now shared by his liturgical apprentices. The work done at liturgy by Christ’s holy people is the perpetuation of Christ’s own sacrificial priesthood. His life in the Father is shared with his people, and spiritually active by the power of the third person of the Trinity. This is a people called out—which is the meaning of the Greek word for Church, ekklesia—we are called out by Christ, for Christ, through Christ, around Christ, under Christ, or, best of all, “with Christ.”
-David Fagerberg, The Liturgical Cosmos
The territorial expansion towards Chinchaysuyo (now Ecuador) took place towards the middle of the 15th century and culminated in the first decades of the 16th. It was initiated by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, son of Pachacuti Inca, the "renovator of the universe" and true builder of the Tahuantinsuyo or Empire of the Incas. The example of the great Tupac Yupanqui was followed by his son Huayna Cápac, until he submitted under his power the entire "universe" then known, with more than 6,000 kilometers of North-South extension and fundamentally affecting the people of the Sierra, since they felt no interest in the low plains of the West Coast and in the endless Amazon rainforests of the East. This empire included on the one hand the widest diversity of peoples, cultures, languages, cults and technologies, and on the other an extraordinary variety of ecological resources; factors with which thanks to an administrative, economic and theocratic system imposed by the Cuzqueños, the largest civilization that has existed in Andean History was structured.
The Incas had no major difficulty in dominating the Cañaris and Puruháes (in Ecuador) with whom they applied a very common strategy in them: the friendly system of reciprocity with the heads of the groups until they achieved their subordination; This method had given them rapid and successful results in Bolivia and Peru; while in the northern villages they had to apply the severe military conquest due to the stubborn resistance they encountered. Testimony of those fierce battles was precisely that of Yahuarcocha (lake of blood) whose waters were dyed red with the blood of the brave Caranquis who succumbed to Huayna Cápac himself.
The invaders captured from the conquered the long tradition and knowledge they had about agriculture, metallurgy, production of luxury products, extraction of the Spondylus shell, salt, coca, etc. Here they found a prodigal nature, with humid rainforest, mangroves and coastline on the coast; wide valleys, grasslands and fertile mountains in the Sierra. This geography counteracted with the ecological systems of the puna, reduced fertile spaces, or the extensive coastal deserts that predominate in the Central and Southern Andes, characteristic of present-day Peru.

Initiated in 1992 as a project to celebrate Canada’s 125th year, the Trans Canada Trail is one of the world's longest networks of multi-use recreational trails. Once fully connected, it will stretch nearly 24,000 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic oceans, through every province and territory.
To date, just over 18,000 kilometres of the Trail are operational which is 80 percent of the proposed route. The goal is to connect the Trail as a continuous route from coast to coast to coast by 2017.

Happy Fence Friday!
The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a medium-sized woodpecker of the family Picidae. It breeds mainly in the eastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far north as Canada.
The red-bellied earns its name from the pale reddish blush of its lower underside. A Red-bellied Woodpecker can stick out its tongue nearly 2 inches past the end of its beak. The tip is barbed and the bird’s spit is sticky, making it easier to snatch prey from deep crevices. Males have longer, wider-tipped tongues than females, possibly allowing a breeding pair to forage in slightly different places on their territory and maximize their use of available food.
Red-bellied Woodpeckers pair off in late winter and early spring. They are seasonally monogamous, meaning that pairs remain together for one nesting season. The male initiates courtship by drumming to attract the female's attention. If she joins him, they engage in a mutual tapping display before settling down to excavate a nest cavity,
The female lays three to eight white eggs in the nest cavity, which both parents incubate in turns, with the female on the day shift and the male taking over at night. Both parents also feed the young once they hatch. In northern parts of their range, Red-bellied Woodpeckers usually raise a single clutch per season, but in the South, they may raise two or even three clutches per year.
Predators of adult red-bellied woodpeckers include birds of prey such as sharp-shinned hawks and Cooper's hawks, black rat snake and house cats. Known predators of nestlings and eggs include red-headed woodpeckers, owls, pileated woodpeckers, eastern gray squirrels, fox squirrels, gray rat snakes and black rat snakes. When approached by a predator, red-bellied woodpeckers either hide from the predator, or harass it with alarm calls. They defend their nests and young aggressively, and may directly attack predators that come near the nest.

Verfahren:
Body Worlds (German title: Körperwelten) is a traveling exposition of preserved human bodies and body parts. In this exhibit what is enticed to see are real skinned humans and other anatomical structures of the body that have gone through the process of plastination. Plastination is “a process in which unite subtle anatomy and modern polymer chemistry.”Plastination is a process that a German man named Gunther Von Hagens created in the late 70’s in which the body is preserved to keep it from decaying.
Process:
There are four steps in the standard process of plastination: fixation, dehydration, forced impregnation in a vacuum, and hardening. Water and lipid tissues are replaced by curable polymers. Curable polymers used by plastination include silicone, epoxy and polyester-copolymer.
The first step of plastination is fixation. Fixation, frequently utilizing a formaldehyde based solution, serves two functions. Dissecting the specimen to show specific anatomical elements can be time consuming. Formaldehyde or other preserving solutions help prevent decomposition of the tissues. They may also confer a degree of rigidity. This can be beneficial in maintaining the shape or arrangement of a specimen. A stomach might be inflated or a leg bent at the knee for example.
After any necessary dissections have taken place, the specimen is then placed in a bath of acetone. Under freezing conditions, the acetone draws out all the water and replaces it inside the cells.
In the third step, the specimen is then placed in a bath of liquid polymer, such as silicone rubber, polyester or epoxy resin. By creating a vacuum, the acetone is made to boil at a low temperature. As the acetone vaporizes and leaves the cells, it draws the liquid polymer in behind it, leaving a cell filled with liquid plastic.
The plastic must then be cured with gas, heat, or ultraviolet light, in order to harden it.
A specimen can be anything from a full human body to a small piece of an animal organ, and they are known as 'plastinates'.[citation needed] Once plastinated, the specimens and bodies are further manipulated and positioned prior to curing (hardening) of the polymer chains.
The Initiation Wells (AKA initiatic wells or inverted towers) are two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers lined with stairs. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park. Of the two wells, the larger one contains a 27-meter spiral staircase with several small landings. The spacing of these landings, combined with the number of steps in the stairs, are linked to Tarot mysticism. The smaller well contains straight stairs that connect a series of ring-shaped floors to one another. This well is also called the 'Unfinished Well'. A structure similar to these wells can be found in the Pozzo di S. Patrizio in Italy.
The initiator of this meet told me he hadn't slept for several nights to get all these engines at Amersfoort... Well, the result was great. Four engines of the former NS 1600 class came to Amersfoort to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Present were RRF 4401 & 4402 (RRF is a G&W subsidiary), RFO 1829 and TCS 1635. In the background are some other former 1600 class engines, that now run for open access freight operators.
Strasbourg Cathedral, Strasbourg, France.
Strasbourg Cathedral is over one thousand years old. Construction of the original, on the exact site of a Roman temple, was initiated in 1015 but later destroyed by a fire. The second wave of construction started in the 12th century, when the Gothic style of architecture had started to develop. Just to give an idea of the scale of the undertaking, it took the entire 13th century to build the nave, and the delicate spire was completed in 1439.

The Temple of Kalabsha, initiated at the end of the Ptolemaic period and completed in the reign of Emperor Augustus (30 BC-14 AD), was dedicated to the Nubian solar god Merwel, known to the Greeks as Mandulis. It was later used as a church.
An impressive stone walkway leads from the lake to the first temple pylon, behind which is a courtyard with colonnades and an eight-column hypostyle room. Inscriptions on the walls show various emperors or pharaohs in the presence of gods or goddesses. Just behind the room is the sanctuary, which consists of three rooms, with stairs leading to the roof, where there are superb views of Lake Nasser and the High Dam, through the trim of the living room and the patio. An inner passage between the temple and the surrounding wall leads to a well preserved nilometer.

ARTLANE
Sai Ying Pun represents a unique mix of cultures, of modernity with tradition: century-old buildings standing next to fancy new residential complexes, dried seafood shops, local eateries alongside modern specialty cafes.
Thanks to an exciting urban art project, ARTLANE, initiated by Henderson Land, Sai Ying Pun has also been transformed into a “mural village”, along from Ki Ling Lane, Shek Chan Lane to Chung Ching Street, with more than 10 pieces of artwork on display around the area.
Inspired by street art from New York, London and Seoul, the project brings together nine international and local artists to give the neighborhood a unique artistic face based on the theme of art and music of Soho.
It's super accessible as well! Take the MTR to Sai Ying Pun station and make your way to Exit B3 - you'll immediately be greeted with bright alleyways full of vibrant murals.

Recently I had the opportunity to go to this fantastic waterfall called six finger falls in the Ozark national forest. It was my first time in the area, and my usual diligent planning strategy was thwarted by an unnecessary refresh initiated by my planning app. Plus, the waterfall did not have any signposts alerting visitors as well, and so finding the waterfall turned out to be a last-minute race against the fading light rather than a well planned and executed shoot.
From the images that I have seen online, there is a giant boulder in front of this waterfall, which provides an excellent vantage point to photograph the waterfall. Unfortunately for me, the water level was a bit high to access the boulder, and shooting from further back, the boulder blocked most of the waterfall. While it's disappointing not getting the image you had in mind, I have learned to use it as an opportunity to scout for other possible compositions. I am not sure if I am fully convinced with this composition, but it gives prominence to the rock's unique patterns that make Six finger falls unique.

BURNSVILLE NC: The use of theatrical masks was purportedly initiated by the Ancient Greeks about a zillion years ago. As the masks were much larger than life they brought the play to those in the distant 'cheap seats.'
In recent times, politicians have brought theatrical masks back from obscurity to use both during campaigns and after elections.
My only problem is determining which mask the politician is wearing. I just can't tell.

“This is Wan Chai” is an observation of the theatrical stage that everyday life presents, as seen through the lens of magical realism. Images of Wan Chai’s iconic heritage are enriched by the performances of over 40 principal, soloist, coryphée and corps de ballet dancers from the Hong Kong Ballet as well as members of the public. Spanning a length of approximately 150 metres, the artwork reimagines and reinvents the station as a public space at the heart of the local community. In this way, the station is transformed into a living stage of choreographed street scenes that commuters play their part in as they pass through.
“This is Wan Chai” is part of the “Moving Cities” series. Commissioned by MTR Corporation and jointly initiated with Hong Kong Design Centre, it was made in collaboration with Hong Kong Ballet, Treacle Media, UK’s Department for International Trade and Conran + Partners. Moving Cities is part of an on-going global inventory of film and photographic work in which world cities are transcribed through dance.
The name of the city derives from the name of the pool around the Golden Temple (aka Harmandir Sahib) and means "holy pool of nectar". It is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion, and they are rightfully very proud of the city and their very beautiful and unique Gurdwara (place of worship).
The Golden Temple was initiated by Guru Ramdaas Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, and completed in 1601 by his successor Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It is now a major pilgrimage and tourism center.
The Golden Temple is the main attraction in the city, and the most important religious place to the Sikhs. It's a stunning complex, and always full of thousands of pilgrims from all over India, excited to be at a place that they usually only see on television. The excitement to be here is infectious, and many people will be more than happy to tell you all about their religion and customs, and show you around the temple itself. Cover your head, remove your shoes and wander around one of the most amazing places in India. The complex is open almost 24 hours (from 6AM until 2AM) and is worth visiting twice: once during the day, once at night, when it's beautifully lit up.
As you arrive near the complex, you will more likely than not be accosted by hawkers trying to sell you bandannas to cover your head. It's not a bad souvenir for Rs.10, but there's also a big barrel of free ones to choose from at the entrance itself. Deposit your shoes at the subterranean building to the left of the entrance, wash your feet at the entrance and head in.

This was an important place already in pre-Roman times, known to Strabo as the city of "Orgialla". A bishopric existed already in 527 when the Bishop of Urgell attended a council in Toledo.
The bishopric here was (and still) is an important one, even the name "La Seu d'Urgell" translates to See of Urgell, and still today the Bishop of Urgell is co-prince of Andorra (The other co-prince is the French president).
The Cathedral of Santa Maria dates back to the 12th century. It had three predecessors. One of these older cathedrals was consecrated in 839 by Bishop Sisebut in the presence of Sunifred I, father of Wilfred the Hairy (aka Guifré el Pilós).
Bishop Otto of Urgell (1095-1122) initiated the present cathedral, planned and built by the architect (a term unknown at that time) "Raimundus Lambardus", but the building remained unfinished for quite a while, due to fights between the diocese and the Count Roger I of Foix, who preferred the Albingensian "heresy". In 1195 La Seu d'Urgell was sieged and looted - and at that time the present cathedral was used as a fortress.
Of course, over the next centuries, many parts were added and/or changed and modeled, as the architectural fashion changed quite a lot. Josep Puig i Cadafalch, actually an architect connected to the "Modernista", led the reconstruction of the whole complex from 1918 on.
The Brotherhood of Steel will not bend against the desolation of change. The preservation and protection of technology will be upheld. Ad Victorium!

From a fortress initiated in the 10th century, the castle was modified in the 18th century to add a set of more comfortable rooms, then in the 19th to give it the appearance of iconic castle as imagined by Viollet le Duc (turrets, etc.).
