The week after my grandfather was buried my sister flew into town for a baby shower. It's her first child. I drove back north to help with the party. Mom, my sister and my aunt ended up back at Grandpa's house and they suggested I take his pocket watch. It was his dress watch, they said-I only remember him wearing simple digital watches, and the engraved train on the back was scratched and scored. Once wound it kept perfect time. I photographed the timepiece on his bed, which he hadn't slept in for years because of his mobility problems.
After the work has finished, driving through the hills of Vesturland we suddenly see a couple of houses besides the road coming up, A little church, a graveyard and an abandoned farmhouse. The road to the house completely taken by nature. We stopped and walk around the building making pictures, The wind is blowing, high grass soaked our shoes and trousers...
I walk closer, take a look inside... a phone, magazines, newspapers, files, some notebooks, a box of icelandic Gin... The repair manual of a VW Beetle 1200, Argus 8mm Movie Editing Outfit... Box with cookies, binoculars. The certificate of the Lions Club still still on the wall.
All there was is still there.. except the living... Slowly and silently this all will be taken by nature...
I look to the right, to the grave yard, look back inside again, the inheritance... left alone for years after the passing of the owner... What would he or she think about sharing this to the world?
We will never know...
I decided to imaging this surreal situation and let the world look over my shoulder...
Mother, Father, all those battles that have been
And the long, long silences that lay in between
Please don't try to tell me all those were in vain
Sometimes these things are hard

Babes in the Wood
Babes In The Wood is an ancient English ballad (it dates back to the 16th century), that tells the sad story of two children lost in a forest.
Their father, before he died, left them in the care of their uncle. The uncle decided to kill the children to get their inheritance. So he recruited two ruffians to take the children in the forest and there to kill them. One of the ruffians, maybe touched, decided not to murder the children. Then the 'good' ruffian killed his crony during a brawl between them, brought the children in the deep wood and promised them to fetch some food . But the children did not see him anymore. The two poor babes died in the forest and their corpses were covered by robins with flowers and leaves. Their bad uncle was punished: his own sons died very soon and he himself was imprisoned for debt and died in a cage. The tragic story of the two children was confessed by the surviving ruffian, but their corps were never found.
The version illustrated in this set of magic lantern slides is very milder: in the ending the two children even embrace again their uncle.
Each inheritance share is subject to inheritance tax. The heirs are jointly liable for the payment of these taxes (article 1709 of the French civil code).
