The week after my grandfather was buried my sister flew into town for a baby shower. It's her first child. I drove back north to help with the party. Mom, my sister and my aunt ended up back at Grandpa's house and they suggested I take his pocket watch. It was his dress watch, they said-I only remember him wearing simple digital watches, and the engraved train on the back was scratched and scored. Once wound it kept perfect time. I photographed the timepiece on his bed, which he hadn't slept in for years because of his mobility problems.

I walk closer, take a look inside... a phone, magazines, newspapers, files, some notebooks, a box of icelandic Gin... The repair manual of a VW Beetle 1200, Argus 8mm Movie Editing Outfit... Box with cookies, binoculars. The certificate of the Lions Club still still on the wall.
All there was is still there.. except the living... Slowly and silently this all will be taken by nature...

Sometimes these things are hard

every time i go visit my parents, i take a few select buttons from my mom's stash. although she has little use for them anymore, she still picks them up when she finds them at garage sales and adds them to her tin. i'm sure she does it for me now :)
