An inherently inquisitive nature is a characteristic of many species, no less so the Timber Wolf. But reservation and caution are also just as apparent as this male gazes out from behind this small tree. How I would love to be able to photograph these great creatures on a day like today, after a big snow. Their location, however, would be less than optimally accessible after the weather of the last two days. Besides, I have to tend to my vocation today rather than my avocation. A shivering cold snow won't keep these cunning canines from their daily routine. They were built for this kind of weather. I will have to be content to photography some of our local birds today, as they contend with weather that will keep most humans indoors. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #NorthAmerica #TimberWolves #DrDADBooks #Canon #Wildlife Conservation
A palm-sized propulsion option for future space missions: each one of these seven emitter arrays etched onto this silicon wafer using micro- and nano-technology possesses more than 500 pinhole-sized emitters that spray out ions, accelerated via an electrostatic field to maximise thrust.
Inherently scalable, this ‘electrospray’ technology is being developed as a cost- and mass-effective method of propelling CubeSats and other small satellites. For the first time in Europe, this ionic-liquid based electrospray propulsion system has achieved more than 400 hours of continuous operation.
“Everyone knows that ‘space is hard’, but we like to say that ‘propulsion is harder’,” comments Daniel Pérez Grande, CEO & Co-founder of IENAI Space in Spain, developing the technology for ESA. “Developing a new technology, which we have built from scratch, has been no easy feat, but we are confident that our propulsion products will stand out in the market for their incredible performance and customisation capabilities; and in fact we have already been approached by a number of interested parties in the industry.”
Known as ATHENA (Adaptable THruster based on Electrospray powered by Nanotechnology), this system is one of three currently being developed by ESA to harness electrospray propulsion for space. ATHENA relies on conductive ionic-liquid salts as a fuel. This liquid flows through nano-textured conical emitters to be accelerated between an emitter and an extractor operating at different electric potentials. The interaction between the surface tension of the liquid and the applied electrostatic field forms ions which can be sprayed out at very high speeds (on the order of 20km/s), creating the force to move the satellite.
The micro-fabricated ATHENA system has the advantage of highly customisable thrust, using non-toxic ‘green’ propellants with no need for pressurised tanks. And the thrusters can be clustered together freely as needed – a total of six would fit onto the 10 cm face of a single CubeSat unit. These units can then be further clustered to deliver thrust for satellites of up to 50kg in mass.
The project has now passed its Preliminary Design Review, targeting a final product by the end of next year. Development has been supported through ESA’s General Support Technology Programme, readying innovative products and services for spaceflight and the open market.

I have this discussion often.
Most of the time, I argue that no one format is superior to the other. That they are merely different tools in the tool belt.
Thing is, I keep looking at my medium format shots, and they're better. Messed with my theory something fierce.
And while the difference is obvious to most, it took me a minute to realize why my medium format shots are better than my digitals.
It's not because Film is inherently superior to Digital. It's because Medium Format is inherently superior to Digital. I'd rather have my 5D to a 35mm camera any day of the week.
But hell, just talking about the size of the surface recording the image, Medium Format has any digital camera under 10k beat, hands down.
BUT HERE'S THE THING: It's different for different folks, yeah? Some folks like what digital gives 'em. Some folks will only use large format. Some folks live and die by the shots their Lomos give 'em.
So my question for you: what is it about the format you prefer that you love? What really plugs you in?
(p.s. my book on relationships, which you can help fund HERE, is gonna be shot on medium format. mmmmmm)

The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

2018 has come to an end, and rather than making one big collage of everything from 2018, I thought it would be more interesting to feature the different types or categories of builds and posts I have made over the year, as they are inherently quite different, both in the building process as well as in how they are percieved (I think anyway). I would also be happy for any feedback concerning the different types of builds, so hopefully 2019 can be even better :)
First up is the Element Experimentation builds!
I only started these a bit into the latter half of the year, but I've enjoyed them immensely! The original idea was to take newly received pieces and make something out of them, whether I had received them intentionally or not. Sort of like a challenge on how to use pieces - like many others have done. Lately it has developed more into some type of experimental proof of concept builds though, and more than being about testing new pieces it has tended to be a bit more about experimenting with how to create representations of different things - most of the time nature related.
For me as a builder the great thing about building these types of builds is that it is rather low commitment, in the way that you can sneak in an interesting build while working on something bigger, as and when you want. Since the builds are generally small and tend to focus on just a couple of elements, it doesn't take too many pieces, although the techniques featured have often been rather bit intensive. It's a nice way to let your creativity flow without feeling the need to make it fit into a proper build in order to showcase it.
When it comes to how these are received, from the feedback I have gotten it seems this series has been rather popular. Of course, I can only speculate as to why that is, but I am at least hoping that these have been either an inspiration that leads builders to create other techniques, or in some cases techniques that can be used by themselves in proper builds. These builds have lead to a number of tutorials as well.
I have gotten quite a few questions about how I keep coming up with new techniques and odd usages of pieces. I think there are a number of factors to it. I think we can all train our creativity by keeping on testing new things, both deliberately or when inspiration strikes. Very often I get an idea for something when I am building something else, usually while working on a bigger build, and I then have a choice: do I focus on what I'm doing and keep going with my build, or do I interupt what I'm doing to pursue this idea?
Earlier I have thought that it's good to be focused, and not get sidetracked, and if you are on a deadline with limited time that is of course what you should do. However, if you want to come up with new ideas you need to follow inspiration where it takes you and try out your ideas as and when they come. If I leave an idea for later, 9 times out of 10 I will never pursue it, that's just how it seems to work out for me. So, I have determined that unless I really don't have time, I will try things out when I think of them.
I also want to highlight that trying out new ideas is sort of a gamble with time. You might stumble upon a new great technique, though it usually takes some time to perfect it. Most times however, at least for me, a pursued idea will lead nowhere, and the time testing it out will essentially be wasted. But, unless you try something out you will never know if it will work or not. I'd estimate that for every idea that leads to something that I eventually post I try out about 5 ideas that don't work out. Of course, with experience and a larger knowledge and understanding of the different lego elements that number will hopefully be pushed down. But don't give up trying out new things just because they didn't work out. Keep at it and you'll eventually come up with something great! :D
Lastly, I will admit that while focusing on these builds my "regular building" has kind of suffered a bit and this year I haven't gotten that many proper full builds out. The question is, was it worth it? I'd like to think that it was :)

The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: Why the Fibonacci Numbers Exalt Beauty: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after, thusly providing symmetry over not only space but time, and exalting life’s foundational dynamic symmetry. Robust, ordered, symmetric growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in the arrangement of nature’s discrete elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which they and all their vital sustenance, as well as all the flowers and nature’s epic beauty, had been created—the golden ratio.
I don't generally go for a lot of luxury mainly because I'm inherently cheap (thanks dad!), but this was one I simply enjoyed too much. A truly custom Stratocaster, every aspect of which I got to decide. To a 30something musician, that is pure luxury. What wows me now, is realizing that this is now, at 35 years old, a vintage guitar as well. The astute will notice the drilling for a standard bridge. That was the original plan until the chance to try one of the original Wilkinson bridges happened my way. I always figured I'd go back to the original, but this thing is sooo good. In the studio, the locking features mean it simply never goes out of tune. Onstage, it's such a massive beast, it will sustain for what feels like hours. An absolute joy to play, even after all these years.
The Venice Beach Skatepark is a public skatepark located in Venice, Los Angeles, opening in late 2009.
Venice beach has been host to a number of well known skate spots throughout the history of skateboarding. From the backyard bowls to the concrete plaza covered in graffiti, the landscapes of Venice, California were integral to the development of skateboarding. Starting in the 2000s, a group of Venice locals, headed by Jesse Martinez, organized an effort to build the Venice Beach Skate Park.
In April 2020, the park was covered in sand to discourage gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. Video of Venice Skate Park Filled With Sand by Hunter Weiss
The first skatepark in the world, Surf City, opened for business at 5140 E. Speedway in Tucson, Arizona on September 3, 1965. Patti McGee, Women's National Champion, attended the grand opening. The park had concrete ramps and was operated by Arizona Surf City Enterprises, Inc. A skatepark for skateboarders and skaters made of plywood ramps on a half-acre lot in Kelso, Washington, USA opened in April 1966. It was lighted for night use. California's first skatepark, the Carlsbad Skatepark opened on March 3, 1976. The World Skateboard Championships were held here on April 10, 1977. It operated until 1979, when it was buried intact beneath a layer of dirt for more than two decades, before being destroyed in 2005. The current Carlsbad Skatepark is in a different location. The East Coast's first skatepark, Ocean Bowl Skate Park, in Ocean City, Maryland, USA, opened the first week of June, 1976. Due to time, wear, and the current needs of skaters, the old bowl and ramp were torn down in the Fall of 1997 and the new park opened in July 1998. The Sandy Hills Skate Park, in Lansdowne, Maryland is the oldest operating municipal skate park in the United States. In 1999 the City of Hermosa Beach, California opened a small skatepark at the site of the first skateboard competition. The competition held at the Pier Avenue Junior High School (now a City museum) was organized by Dewey Weber across the street from his surf and skateboard shop. Makaha Skateboards was a sponsor of the competition. In 1987, an all wooden indoor skate park opened in Bristol, CT called CT Bike. CT Bike is where Tony Hawk made his debut when he was a young boy on his first East Coast tour.[7] Until its closing in 2022, the indoor skate park was operated by the same family who built the park despite a fire that threatening the park in 1988. As of 2022 the park is now closed for good.
In more extreme climates, parks were built indoors, often using wood or metal. By the end of the 1970s, the popularity of skateboarding had waned, and the original parks of the era began to close. A downturn in the overall skateboard market in the 1980s, coupled with high liability insurance premiums, contributed to the demise of the first wave of skateparks. Some second-generation parks, such as Upland, California's Pipeline, survived into the 1980s. However, few of the private parks of the 1970s remain, with the notable exception of Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida, United States.[8] However, many public parks of that era can still be found throughout Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.[citation needed]
The modern skatepark designs of the Pacific Northwest can be traced back to Burnside Skatepark, a DIY "barge build" beneath the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Skateboarders used an area populated primarily by the city's "undesirable elements" to create a skatepark, building one section at a time. The process is called "design/build" (D/B), and is a characteristic of many skateparks today. The design/build process ensures that adjacent skatepark features are harmonious and rideable, allowing skateboarders to create endless "lines" to ride among the many features.
Skate parks, related obstacles/ramps and locations designed for extreme sport utilization have made their way into the media over time, such as with the aforementioned Burnside Skatepark being included in the movie Free Willy.
Public skateparks have had a resurgence in the US, made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in skateboarders' injuries.
Street skating has blurred the line between skateparks and street spots. Some cities are starting to put in skate spots/plazas with features that would not have been classically designed for skateboarding, but can be skated by street skaters legally. In some instances, street spots that were not originally designed for skateboarding have been converted into sanctioned skate plazas.
There is also an emerging movement of making art and sculpture skate-able. This provides additional legal skate spots that blend well with other city art and landscape features. Skate-able art allows for the creation of thriving multi-use areas, as installations often become picturesque destinations for skaters and non-skaters alike.
Unlike organized sports, like basketball or football, skateboarding has no set arena or rules and skateparks have no standard design template. Each skatepark is designed specifically to provide unique challenges to its users. There are, however, three main categories of skatepark design: bowl, street plaza and flow parks.
Bowl parks are designed to emulate and improve upon the pool skating experience. Skaters in bowl parks can move around the park without taking their feet off the board to push. The curved walls of bowls allow skaters to ride around and across the bowl in addition to the back and forth skating you might see on a traditional half pipe. Bowls and bowl parks come in an endless variety of shapes and sizes but most bowls are between 3' and 12’ deep.
Street plaza parks are the favorite of the vast majority of skaters and they are designed to emulate and improve upon the street skating experience. Obstacles in a street plaza are styled to look like natural street terrain such as stairs, railings, planters and benches. Skaters will push off with their feet to gain momentum in a street plaza. The first public outdoor skate plaza is the Vancouver Skate Plaza, built in 2004 by New Line Skateparks.
Flow parks (or Park style) combine elements of both bowl parks and street plazas. In a well designed flow park a skater can pump around the parks curved walls such as quarter pipes, pump bumps and bowl corners without taking their feet off to push. They can use that speed to hit street obstacles such as stairs, railings and benches.
Skateparks may be privately or publicly owned. Privately owned skateparks usually have admission fees, while publicly owned skateparks are generally free. Many privately owned skateparks are indoors, usually in warehouses, roller rinks or buildings with high ceilings, especially in areas with snowy winters. Public skateparks are usually outdoors.
Skatepark construction can be divided into two major categories — prefabricated and custom built concrete. Prefabricated parks can be made of wood, plastic, sheet metal, and concrete. Most are designed and built by playground equipment manufacturers who present these parks as a cost-effective alternative to custom-designed concrete skateparks. In reality, custom built concrete skateparks can be quite cost competitive with prefabricated skate ramps.
According to an editor of Transworld Skateboarding magazine, concrete parks are now "pretty much the industry standard" as they require fewer repairs and less maintenance.

This is Queensland’s Channel Country, where flooding rains and devastating droughts are part of western Queensland life. This region is part of the arid centre of Australia. At least several thousand years have passed since the inland had a wetter climate. The landscape reflects this aridity and the contrasts can be striking.
Change and unpredictability are the main features of the climate, causing erratic swings from drought to plenty. Major rains can transform the landscape from appearing dry and dead to being lush and green in only a few days.
Plant cover varies dramatically with both land type and climate events. Frequent and severe droughts are common, normal, and expected. They are a fact of life for inland Australia and play an important role in the evolution of the landscape.
Plants of the arid lands have evolved in different ways to survive the climatic extremes and harsh conditions. Some resist drought by using little water, and others avoid it by only germinating in sustained wet times.
The gradual erosion of the gibber plains and tablelands replenishes the sand of the dunes. This process has been going on for tens of thousands of years and will continue for many more.
There is a wide variety of land uses and land users in the region. Land uses include pastoralism, petroleum exploration and production, conservation, and tourism. A major concern for land managers throughout the arid region is that these land uses do not accelerate the natural landscape processes.
The Diamantina, Cooper and Eyre Creeks dominate the Channel Country, flowing from the Northern Territory and Queensland into South Australia. These major intermittent streams and their floodplains are interlaced with dune fields, forming an enormous system of swamps, lakes, and waterholes. These streams flow less frequently further south, often not reaching Lake Eyre.
There are numerous salt lakes, including the very large Lake Frome, Callabonna, Gregory, Blanche, and Eyre. All are usually dry. Fillings of the large lakes are occasional and irregular. Some, for example the southern portion of Lake Eyre, have a heavy salt crust.
The district is extremely viable and dominated by three main land types; the "hard" country of the stony tablelands and downs; the sand dune fields of the major Simpson, Tirari, and Strzelecki Deserts; and the floodplains, channels and temporary lakes of the major river systems. Minor land types include arid ranges and salt lakes.
The stone-covered downs are gently rolling, with small slopes and well defined drainage lines. The stones are remnants of ancient soil surfaces. It is these stones on the surface, not the spare plant cover, which provide protection against soil erosion. Within this land type are other landscapes, flat or gently undulating, with little or no stone cover. This land type relies on plant cover from erosion protection, rather than the stony "armour".
Tableland with an intact stone or plant cover is inherently stable, though the erosion which follows removal of this cover is often serious and irreversible.

More golden ratio and epic photography composition books soon! Best wishes for the Holiday Season! Dr. Elliot McGucken :)

While studying photography in Pathshala, I developed new technical and aesthetic skills at an academic level and gained a fresh perspective on seeing the world around me. However, I still felt that something was missing. That missing piece was the ability to articulate aesthetics through language and to experience aesthetics with the basis of life itself.
During this time, I developed a deep desire to understand philosophy. Within a few months, I decided to pursue academic studies in philosophy. There were two main reasons behind this decision: first, to gain knowledge of philosophy, and second, to reshape my photographic view point through a philosophical angle—essentially, to integrate aesthetics with philosophy.
As I delved into this complex subject, I found myself particularly influenced by three philosophical ideologies: the philosophy of Nihilism, Engels and Marx’s materialism, and Gautama Buddha’s theory of Functionalism. These perspectives began shaping my understanding of life, humanity, society, and aesthetics. My way of seeing the world started to transform.
Nihilism and materialist philosophy argue that humans are not a special species. According to Buddha, life itself is full of suffering. Since humans are not inherently special and life has no predetermined purpose, people often experience restlessness. My photographs reflect this idea through landscapes, where excessive negative space in the frame symbolizes despair, purposelessness, and solitude in human life. Most people live under the illusion that they are unique compared to the surroundings. This belief prevents them from feeling truly connected to nature.
Lalon once said, "He and Lalon exist together, yet they are separated by infinite distance." Even though humans exist within nature, they somehow remain detached from it. In my frames, vast negative spaces with tiny human figures symbolize this very detachment. Here, nature is immense, and humans are small—serving as a reminder that humanity is not any superior to nature.
The mist in my photographs enhances the minimalist effect, further detaching people from their surroundings. The presence of human-made structures in the background represents our ongoing struggle to prove our superiority. However, the blurred, barely visible architecture behind the fog reflects the failure of this pursuit. Humanity is trapped in this endless contradiction, deepening its existential despair. Meanwhile, the fog thickens, and the distance between humans and nature continues to grow.
This is a blog post I wrote today. This photo is inspired by my daughter.
The other night my 12-year-old daughter told me she hates her thighs and thinks they are fat.
Most of you have seen photos of my kid, right? Many of you have seen her in person. She doesn’t have an extra ounce of fat anywhere on her body. She thinks they are “fat” because when she sits down, they spread out. I explained to her that the muscles are relaxed in that position, that is all. I talked about how when we stare at any one thing for too long, it can start to look strange to us. She said everyone else is pretty. Ugh.
What is a mother to do? How do we keep our daughters from going through this kind of agony? Will this sort of self-flagellation ever end? Is it inherently human or is it a product of years and years of media flashing false images of ideal bodies?? I do find it hard to imagine that a woman living in a society where the sole purpose of existence is survival would have the time to be concerned with issues of vanity.
It is heartbreaking. Then yesterday a good friend wrote a blog post about her own body issues…she wrote in gut-wrenching details about how she felt seeing her body. She’s gained weight in the past year since getting married, but to me she is still a long way away from fat. She is extremely beautiful and intelligent and knows very well that her thoughts and feelings about her body are unhealthy, but that doesn’t stop her from feeling them. She has had thoughts of suicide over this—it’s no laughing matter. She’s struggled with an eating disorder in the past and I’m worried she’s heading for it again. She possibly suffers from what we know as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_dysmorphic_disorder
I was asked to do this commission by a family friend, on a very limited timescale.
Maybe not quite as polished as some figs, but I'm quite happy with how it turned out overall, although I wish I'd known that Brickforge do Guitars, as I might have saved myself a few hours here!!!
Hair was sculpted from Magic Sculpt, custom Fender Stratocaster made from Styrene sheet and the shirt trim was made using white leather.
I actually quite like this fig and it would have been nice to have one fig in my collection that doesn't have a weapon or isn't inherently evil ; )
This is a photo of an America Kestrel. Although it is inherently cute, it is actually an efficient and deadly predator of mice and smaller prey. The American kestrel is one of the smallest varieties of falcon. I took this shot during my visit the Northwest Raptor Centre, just outside Duncan. The photo was taken in August 2017, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.
Exmouth RNLI Shannon class Lifeboat at Exmouth beach , Devon , England .
The Shannon Lifeboat is an all weather lifeboat powered by waterjets making it very agile and maneuverable it has been designed to be inherently self righting returning to an upright position in the event of a capsize . The Shannon was fully designed in house by the RNLI and costs around 2.1 million pounds .

Part mech, part rover, the Lagrange-Lunacorp 286 Moonskater was one of their least commercially successful designs.
The thinking of the design team was that the design would combine the speed of a traditional rover with the agility of a mech; however, the addition of wheels to the vehicle's feet made the LL286 inherently unstable and it had a reputation for falling over and being difficult to control.
The few that were produced mostly saw service as mechanic-shop utility vehicles used to repair large spaceships and rovers, where their manipulator arms could be used to best effect.
By the side of a drowning and decaying RAF Westland Whirlwind search and rescue helicopter on the fringe of Caernarfon airport (which used to be the RAF Llandwrog base) I had no idea I was stood close to where tens of thousands of tons of chemical weapons were once stored. Operation Sandcastle was a United Kingdom non-combat military operation conducted between 1955-1956. Its purpose was to dispose of chemical weapons by dumping them in the Irish Sea
The British possessed almost 71,000 air-dropped bombs of 250 kilograms in weight, each of which was filled with tabun. These had been seized from German ammunition dumps during the final months of World War II. A total of 250,000 tons of German chemical weapons had been discovered, the majority of which were destroyed because they comprised warfare agents which the allies already possessed in great abundance e.g. mustard gas. However, the stocks of tabun and sarin were considered more valuable because the allies did not possess nerve agent technology at that time. As a result, captured stocks of German nerve agents were divided between Britain and the United States after discussion, with the Americans taking the sarin. The British transferred their 14,000 tons of ordnance containg tabun in October 1945, via Hamburg and Newport, to temporary storage at the RAF strategic reserve ammunition store at Llanberis. Longer term facilities were prepared at RAF Llandwrog where the bombs were to be stored in stacks, out in the open, on the runways of the disused airfield. The intention was that any leaks of nerve agent would be carried out to sea by prevailing winds. The bombs were transported to Llandwrog by truck from August 1946 to July 1947.
In July 1947 it was discovered that the bombs were fuzed and a number of them were leaking nerve agent. The fact that the bombs had fuzes inserted meant that they were inherently unsafe: to reduce the risk of accidental detonation, standard practice is to avoid installing the fuze in any air-dropped bomb until shortly before it is loaded onto an aircraft to be used in combat. For similar reasons bomb fuzes are always stored separately, well away from bombs. Unfortunately, this was not the case with the 250 kilogram tabun bombs at RAF Landwrog. Not only had the bombs been left with fuzes inserted for a considerable amount of time (possibly years), but they were also left exposed to the elements creating a corrosion risk, together with the inevitable temperature fluctuations which resulted from changing weather. None of these factors were accepted practice regarding the safe, long-term storage of bomb fuzes or explosive ordnance in general.
At a rate of 500 bombs a week they were defuzed and individually coated in a waxy preservative to seal them. Seventy-two irreparable devices were neutralised on-site by being drained into individual pits filled with caustic soda crystals. Despite being given a preservative covering the bombs continued to suffer in the damp Welsh climate and in 1951 twenty-one 'Bellman' hangars were erected on the site to store the bombs. Finally in June 1954 it was decided to dispose of the entire stock because by then it was recognised that not only did the weapons have no military value but they had actually become a liability, which could only become worse as time passed.
Operation Sandcastle was divided into two sections, a sea voyage to Cairnryan and then a transfer to suitable hulks there for later sinking north-west of Ireland beyond the continental shelf. It was intended to process 16,000 bombs in the first attempt in mid-1955.
The work began with the construction of a road between Llandwrog and the nearby port of Fort Belan where six LCTs (landing crafts) were assembled. Loading trials in June indicated only 400 bombs could be loaded on each craft, less than hoped. It was then decided to remove the tail-fins from the bombs to reduce their length, and to pack them in new boxes. This work increased each LCT's load to 800 bombs and by mid-July all 16,000 devices had been safely carried to Cairnryan.
The SS Empire Claire was the first scuttling ship, her loading began in late June and by July 23 all 16,000 bombs were aboard, although an ill-considered loading plan had given her a noticeable list to starboard. The three scuttling charges of TNT were positioned to ensure her sinking would be steady and flat and the nine-man crew embarked. Departure was delayed by industrial action on the Firth of Clyde preventing the departure of the ocean-going tugboat Forester.
On 25 July 1955 the SS Empire Claire, SS Forester, and navy escorts Mull and Sir Walter Campbell left Cairnryan, the Empire Claire soon broke down and was taken under tow. They reached the scuttling point (56°30′00″N 12°00′00″W) in the early morning of 27 July but waited until 10.00 hrs for the arrival of an RAF photo-reconnaissance aircraft to observe the operation. The initial two scuttling charges blew and dramatically increased the vessel's starboard list, forcing the use of the emergency charge which opened her stern and caused a rapid sinking, bows up, to a depth of around 2,500 metres.
The later sinking went without any problems. MV Vogtland was scuttled on 30 May 1956 at the same site, taking 28,737 bombs with her and on 21 July 1956 the SS Kotka was sunk (at 56°31′00″N 12°05′00″W) with 26,000 bombs, 330 tons of arsenic and fifty cases of unidentified material

He's been watching you; judging might be a better word. There is something inherently unsettling in the omnipresence of Santa Claus. There's seemingly nowhere you can hide from his watchful eye. And as it's made clear in the old lore, he's not just watching but evaluating your every move. It's little wonder that many little kids are terrified of Saint Nick as evidenced by the family photos that get trotted out at this time if year. Unwitting parents plop a child down on Santa's lap and hilarity ensues except for the kid who develops a lifelong anxiety for the holidays. Reminds me of the dark side of many favorite Christmas stories. Like Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. As I read the story, Frosty has a scrape with local law enforcement and is summarily run out of town. But on his way out taunts everyone with the threat of returning again at a later date, perhaps to cause unspecified mayhem. Happy holidays indeed!
Sex sells
Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing.[1] The wearing of clothing is exclusively a human characteristic. The amount of clothing worn depends on functional considerations (such as a need for warmth or protection from the elements) and social considerations. In some situations the minimum amount of clothing (i.e. covering of a person's genitals) may be socially acceptable, while in others much more clothing is expected.
People, as individuals and in groups, have varying attitudes towards their own nudity. Some people are relaxed about appearing less than fully clothed in front of others, while others are uncomfortable or inhibited in that regard. People are nude in a variety of situations, and whether they are prepared to disrobe in front of others depends on the social context in which the issue arises. For example, people need to bathe without clothing, some people also sleep in the nude, some prefer to sunbathe in the nude or at least topless. Many people are prepared to disrobe for a medical examination, while others are nude in other situations. Some people adopt nudism as a lifestyle.
Though the wearing of clothes is the social norm in most cultures, some cultures, groups and individuals are more relaxed about nudity, though attitudes often depend on context. On the other hand, some people feel uncomfortable in the presence of any nudity, and the presence of a nude person in a public place can give rise to controversy, irrespective of the attitude of the person who is nude. Besides meeting social disapproval, in some places public nudity may constitute a crime of indecent exposure. Many people have strong views on nudity, which to them can involve issues and standards of modesty, decency and morality. Some people have a psychological aversion to nudity, called gymnophobia. Many people regard nudity to be inherently sexual and erotic.
Nudity (sex-related or not) is also to be found in visual arts (see also art nude, nude photography, nudity in film), also on the Internet, and in performing arts. It is a factor in adult entertainment of various types.
A prototype transmit/receive module on a single 6x6 mm chip, intended to deliver miniaturised space radar systems for future missions.
Traditional transmit/receive modules used on Europe’s Sentinel-1 and comparable radar missions employ separate circuits for the high-power amplifier, the low-noise amplifier and the switch/isolator.
The aim, developed for ESA by TNO in the Netherlands, UMS in France, and Airbus Defense and Space in Germany, was to integrate all these functions onto a single chip, while delivering increased efficiency and a threefold increase in radio-frequency power.
The added ingredient enabling this was that the chip was made using gallium nitride (GaN) – the most promising semiconductor since silicon. If you have a Blu-ray player than you own a tiny crystal of GaN, used in high-performance blue lasers.
GaN can operate with high radio-frequency output power, low noise or at much higher temperatures than silicon. As a plus, it is also inherently resistant to radiation. ESA has been leading the industrialisation of GaN through the GaN Reliability Enhancement and Technology Transfer Initiative consortium.
This prototype was developed through ESA’s Basic Technology Research Programme.
A follow-up project to integrate the chip into a complete radar module suitable for a future Sentinel-1 successor mission is being undertaken through the Agency’s follow-up General Support Technology Programme.

"Art is not illustration, but radiation. But only those may percieve and comprehend that very radiation who carry inherently that mystical receiver, more sensitive than any membrane which detects and transfers art into and within the soul of the viewer, listener or reader.
The vast majority of people is less sensitive to art than animals.
"It looks just like it!" or "Got it right!" - they'll say. Or even: "Describes it as if it had happened to me!"

The Fibonacci Numbers are closely related to the golden ratio, and thus they also play a prominent role in exalted natural and artistic compositions!
I'm working on a far deeper book titled The Golden Ratio Number for Photographers. :)
The famous mathematician Jacob Bernoulli wrote:
The (golden spiral) may be used as a symbol, either of fortitude and constancy in adversity, or of the human body, which after all its changes, even after death, will be restored to its exact and perfect self.
Engraved upon Jacob’s tombstone is a spiral alongside the words, "Eadem Mutata Resurgo," meaning "Though changed, I shall rise again." And so it is that within the Golden Ratio Principle, the golden harmonies rise yet again.
The golden ratio is oft known as the divine cut, the golden cut, the divine proportion, the golden number, and PHI for the name of the architect of the Parthenon Phidias. It has exalted classical art on down through the millennia and it can exalt your art too!
Ask me anything about the golden ratio! :) I will do my best to answer!!

*Drury is packing a suitcase. He is stopped by a sudden noise*
Drury- Who’s there?
Blaze- Oh. Just the ghosts of sins past
Drury- Blaze? ….Am I hallucinating?
Blaze- Seems possible. Or maybe I’m just unkillable
Drury- No, no. You fell to your death. Guts everywhere. Maybe… I was drugged a few months ago after all. At Simon’s funeral
Blaze- Ah Simon. Your eldest. He gets to come back and he was splattered all over the funeral home. From what I know I haven’t even been scraped off the pavement!
Drury- How long does Crane’s toxin last anyway?
Blaze- Fuck man, don’t ask me that. I’m just… you know what? Just consider me a little angel on your shoulder.
Drury- Or a devil.
Blaze- Heh. So that’s a really nice picture. Is that you as Batman?
Drury- …it was cosplay karaoke…
Blaze- Eh?
Drury- Cosplay Karaoke
Blaze- That is unreal. Unreal. And I’m saying that as the hallucination of the friend you killed.
Drury- Uh huh
Blaze- Did you ever have a ghost Carson? After you killed him the first time, that is
Drury- No. I don’t think he stays dead long enough to become a ghost
Blaze- Ah, this is fun. Who says Scarecrow Toxins can’t be fun?

You know that, by the degree of The Arsonist Agreement, *you* took responsibility for The Misfit’s actions, should any of us ever kill a pyro
Gar- To be fair, I was really drunk when I signed that
Rigger- We all signed it. Mick took responsibility for the Rogues, Skull-The Superman Revenge Squad Meltdown-The Manhattan Men and the Human Flame took responsibility for his split personality Terry.
Chancer- Well, you’re all screwed. The Pyro Pals don’t take kindly to the deaths of one of their own... Specially not Snowflame.
Rigger- That's what I'm saying!
Irving- And I'm saying, get against the wall.
*Planet Master throws Chancer against the wall*
Gar- Hang on, Norbert, wait a minute-
Irving- Sorry Gar. Now, join your friends over there.
Rigger- I’m still stuck.
Irving- Fine, everyone stand beside Rigger...
Gar- Why?
Irving- I don't have a lot of friends Gar, you know this. But I do have Zodiac. And as much as he treats me like crap, he's always there for me. You on the other hand, literally left me in Arkham this now. So I'm urging you, up against the fucking wall. And I'll make it quick. Drop your flamethrower.
*Gar complies, sliding it over. Planet Master grabs it, and smiles*
Irving- Not so mean without this, are you.
Gar- Norbert... I have nothing else to say except EAT RIGGER
*Gar and Chancer pick up Rigger and throw him at Norbert, who, in a panic activates the flamethrower*
Len- MY BAR! MY BAR! You fuckin' maniac!
Gar- Len, forget it! We’ve got to find Drury!
- - - - - - - - - - -
*Norbert emerges from the rubble The ZoDevoe Master appears in a burst of light*
Zodiac- You donkey cock. All I asked you to do was kill some C-Listers
Irving- I'm sorry, I just need another chance! I mean, Chancer is inherently lucky. How am I supposed to beat that?
Zodiac- You can’t, I can… by becoming him…
Irving- Eh?
Zodiac- I mean… never mind. You could never understand
Irving- What’re you-? Zodiac!
*An arm emerges from Zodiac’s chair and latches itself on Hangman’s head, beginning the body transference*
Irving- Wait! I'll be good! I'll be-
Zodiac- Problem solving
Today, marriage became legal for everyone in Connecticut.
Marriage is now equal in two states out of fifty, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
Several states, including Vermont, California, New Jersey, Maine, Hawaii, DC, Washington and Oregon, have fallen short, creating Civil Unions, a policy of supposed Separate Equality, which is inherently unequal.
This country is absolutely treading on the rights of a minority group. Our laws are in place to protect minorities from the tyranny of majority rule.
If you want to take action, get in touch with the Equality group in your area.
There is a Nationwide protest against homophobic discrimination this Saturday, November 15th. Stand up and be heard.
Love is love.
In a country where church and state are separate, religion is free, and genders are equal, we are hypocrites operating under the principle that all Americans must abide by Fundamentalist morality in personal and legal matters, a moral system which inherently divides women from men.
So here's my question for you:
If I legally change my gender, can I marry whomever I want and get on with my life?
One of the keys to shooting Epic Landscape Photography is exalting the photograph's soul via golden ratio compositions, thusly wedding the photographic art to the divine proportion by which life itself was designed and exalted.

Ansel Adams is not only my favorite photographer, but he is one of the greatest photographers and artists of all time. And just like great artists including Michelangelo, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Leonardo da Vinci, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Botticelli, and Picasso, Ansel used the golden ratio and divine proportions in his epic art.
Not so long ago I discovered golden regions in many of his famous public domain his 8x10 aspect ratio photographs. I call these golden harmony regions "regions of golden action" or "ROGA"S, as seen here:
www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1812448512351066.107374...
And too, I created some videos highlighting Ansel's use of the golden harmonies. Enjoy!

Inspired by our local history. from the late 1800s till 1980 Buffalo was a major steel producing region. Blast furnaces ran day and night so that it looked like volcanoes near the outer harbor. Through WWII and up until the 1970s steel production boomed. Many adjacent businesses also boomed and at one time Buffalo was the 8th largest city in America and it had a lot of money. It had world class hospitals and universities. Art collections that were smaller, but also world renown. It had everything big cities had...architecture, food, luxuries and all the amenities of modern life.
It all ran out starting in the 1950s. The first bellwether was the white flight to the suburbs, spurred by developers and banks. Racism is a powerful force. Land was cheap in the suburbs, FHA loans were plentiful, development was subsidized, the GI Bill provided access to mortgages and education. All the while Black people, who were significant numbers of The City population were red-lined into poorer, unfunded districts and denied FHA loans, despite receiving GI Bill guarantees. Many suburbanites up here retain this racist bigoted mindset that black people in the city deserve the suffering and poverty because they are inherently lazy...while suburbanites are inherently successful because they are more intelligent and hard-working. when the deck is loaded in your favor it is easy to succeed and feel like you've done something, but the truth is that my ancestors got many more breaks. Even jobs were mostly gotten by recommendation. It's not a surprise the police and fire departments, and most unions for that matter, are predominantly white and have many many family members. It never was a meritocracy.
A person I knew, who was a staunch union man, a teamster, routinely boasted how if blacks were hired they'd be pushed off the catwalks to their deaths. I've worked in many union jobs, including the UAW and have seen this behavior as the rule not the exception.
Despite all this, healthy, successful families were the norm until the 1970s and 80s. Business sold us out completely. In Buffalo Bethlehem Steel closed, laying off 25,000 people over a year or so. concomitantly Republic Steel, Buffalo Forge, Buffalo Color and many downstream businesses closed. It was not Environmental regulations or labor that shutdown these companies - despite their claims. In fact the environmental effects of these companies are so pervasive that we will pay for their mess in perpetuity. The amount of money these companies paid out in salaries is completely offset by toxic waste dumps, polluted rivers, brownfields, etc...that will never be viable taxable, inhabitable property again....unless we decide that poisoning people is an acceptable thing. The "onerous" rules that companies face cut into their profit (which left this region with their families, who still hoard it). once Mexico, and the China and Asia became open and sources for cheap labor and free reign to poison at will, American companies jumped ship and sold us out as fast as possible. The People's Army in China is funded beyond its wildest dreams, mostly by our "American" companies. Mao's China never could have advanced them like American business has. And the delusion that exposure to Western business changes anti-democratic regimes has created a powerful Maoist monster that owns us and is a threat.
So there we are. A society that produces nothing (except at the small business scale) and concentrates its wealth into smaller numbers of people whose only goal is but the government and use it to their will. where this all goes I don't know...but it seems that there must be a way where American business can be prosperous (it was, even after environmentalism and worker equality - but could just be more prosperous by coddling communist regimes) and we have a clean world where people have the ability to prosper.
It's been quite interesting going back to rework some old shots, the original is below, I feel I've removed a color cast that was there before, I also use more black nowadays... something I like, there is also a bit more perspective control in the new one, also more contrast and more detail... the camera I had at the time didn't do RAW and it's internal jpeg processing always gave quite saturated shots, which it turns out is either something I inherently liked or was the root cause that nudged me down that path that I tend to tread nowadays... the one with lots of color, regardless it was a pretty spectacular sunrise :o)
Terry began building a simple homestead region for me and before we knew it, we had a greater vision, that of course, required more land impact than we had.
So along came the full region, and Terry is continuing to create his magic there. I do not want to give away all the news too early, but suffice it to say, it will be enjoyed. You all most likely know Terry's work already and know that he is an true artist in SL and RL.
It might be ten days or four weeks until it is finished. There is always 'one more thing' to add to it.
Join the [valium] group to stay informed of our grand opening.
In case you are not familiar with the Latin language, vox populi, vox dei means 'the voice of the people is the voice of God.'
When Vox Populi, Vox Dei is used in conversation, it typically frames a discussion about whether the collective will of the people aligns with divine will, moral law, or higher truth. It can endorse the idea that public opinion reflects divine or moral legitimacy, challenge divine-right claims by prioritizing the people, or critique the notion that popular sentiment is inherently just. The exact meaning depends on the speaker’s intent—whether they’re advocating for democracy, invoking moral caution, or using it ironically.
I plan some discussions about this matter down the road, at the new region. Perhaps you would like to participate. It is an interesting topic and aligns with our current societies, in different ways.
Dialogue is always beneficial. I think we all agree on that!
Okay okay enough of the semi-serious stuff. Suffice it to say we are going to have lots of fun.
I will be contacting artists soon about exhibiting in our gallery and also musicians, DJ's, etc for entertainment.

Reverse-engineered from a ship that fell through a wormhole from 1000 years in the future, the Wildfire GARC racer consists of two distinct sections...
- The giant aft section is a single-use engine, that provides both propulsion and maneuvering. The material of the engine's hull is its own fuel source, meaning that once the Wildfire has completed a course, the engine cannot be salvaged. Thus, an entirely new craft must be constructed for every race.
- The much smaller fore section consists of two components: a massive computer core (necessary to maintain proper engine function and attitude control of this inherently unstable system) and a combined cockpit-slash-escape-pod just large enough for a single pilot.
The Wildfire racer is a controversial vehicle, as the inevitable detonation of the engine toward the end of every race often results in the destruction of several other competitors on the course.

5 Signs Your Aura Attracts the Wrong Crowd 🚫

After you change some personalities
1. You prioritize the quality of their hearts.
2. You don't love animals.
3. You choose yourself.
4. You have your boundaries.
5. You stand up for yourself.
ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ
1. You prioritize the quality of their hearts.
☑ You're not afraid to assess their sincerity early on.
☑ You don't believe matters of the good heart require extended time.
You'd not give them 3-6 months or 1-2 years to change and demonstrate sincerity and a good heart so, you'll check at that point. Because you recognize that sincerity and a good heart don't need time, they should be assessed here and now, whether someone possesses them or not.
2. You don't love animals.
☑ You don't tolerate inhumanity. Anything deserving of a unique love, time, and attention must inherently possess a sense of humanity.
☑ You'll establish boundaries for your pet's demands, ensuring it doesn't expect more than its status permits.
For instance, you won't find yourself constantly changing your pet's food. Take the scenario where you initially bought liver-flavored kibble. When your pet refused it, the next day, you switched to lamb-flavored kibble, giving up on the liver flavor. After consuming only a 1/3 of the box, your pet became bored and started eating less. So, you purchased chicken-flavored kibble. Even after consuming of the half of chicken box, your pet still didn't eat much, leading you to try chicken and rice flavor, then chicken and spinach, and even chicken mixed with pumpkin. You kept changing the food out of fear that your pet wasn't eating enough, wasn't staying healthy, and you were concerned about its well-being, all without considering the cost and what you should reasonably expect in return.
You may eventually give up on pellet food altogether, choosing wet food instead. If that didn't work, you switched to raw meat. You even upgraded to premium raw meat, fueled by concerns that your pet might not enjoy it or that it wouldn't provide enough nutrition.
" Love and kindness should always be balanced with reasonableness, and it's important to set limits and boundaries to prevent them from becoming uncontrollable."
Establish boundaries. If the animal doesn't respond positively to your care, expresses dissatisfaction, or fails to appreciate your efforts, consider releasing it back into its natural habitat. Don't worry about how it will survive without your assistance. In this world, there are always people who cherish and care for animals, they will soon find themselves in a new place. Instead of feeling sorry and pitying them for letting go, prioritize your compassion and empathy toward yourself first.
3. You choose yourself.
☑ Respect yourself and your own needs before others.
4. You have your boundaries.
☑ Set boundaries and be strict about them.
☑ Don't let anyone cross the line.
☑ Don't give space to things that are unfair.
" Always remember that people may take advantage of you or treat you poorly only if you allow them to. Bad people engage in harmful and unfair behavior because good people appear weak and discouraged. Therefore, strive to remain strong and maintain firm boundaries."
5. You stand up for yourself.
☑ You have to be fearless and have the ability to deal with conflict, dislike, and hate from people who disagree with you or won't let you stand up for yourself.
ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ
" What might you lose in this process to embrace these five personas?
You'll find yourself surrounded by positive influences because those with negative intentions will be less likely to be drawn to you and exploit you unfairly. Gradually, they will fade from your life, and you won't encounter new ones with similar intentions.
While you may initially perceive this as a significant loss, remember that there are still good and kind-hearted people in the world waiting to be discovered ."

The light of the ultimate
All we need is the morning. As long as there is sunrise, then there is the possibility that we can face all of our misfortunes, celebrate all our blessings, and live all our endeavors as human beings.
Spirituality is something that has become necessary in these troubled times. Yet it is inherently superfluous.
We need it to remind ourselves, to bolster ourselves, to integrate ourselves, to fulfill ourselves.
If we could simply acknowledge the mystery of night and the glory of morning, we would need neither civilization nor spirituality.
We may think mornings are so common they are unworthy of veneration, but do you realize most places in the cosmos do not have mornings?
This daily event is our supreme goodness. Greet the dawn. That is your miracle to witness. That is the ultimate beauty. That is sacredness. That is your gift from heaven.
That is knowledge that life is not futile. That is enlightenment. That is your meaning in life. That is your directive.
That is your comfort. That is the solemnity of duty. That is inspiration for compassion. That is the light of the ultimate.

Taken nearly 1 year ago at Wyming Brook back when winters had some snow in them.
I've tried to capture this particular point along the brook on several occasions, there is something inherently winter feeling about this particular location but I haven't been able to get quite the composition I felt would work best. Part of the problem is getting up close enough at the right angle.
This is my best attempt so far worth sharing.
Find the original size in my SnowScapes gallery
An Imperial Magikstrate squad of standard infantry (1 officer and 5 soldiers). They wear a special hard suit that allows them to operate in almost any environment while providing additional armor. Although not inherently magikal, their Cuprite-7 Shatter-Guns hold a magical element that can provide various bonuses.
This was such a fun water droplet refraction image to make, partly because it was done with the GH5 and partly because it was done in Bulgaria near the Black Sea. Two dandelion seeds dancing in the light of a poppy – read on!
While walking through a row of flower shops in Varna, Bulgaria, I spotted one solitary poppy among an array of daisies and roses. It was a huge flower, and I knew it would work well for a refraction photograph. Typically I choose daisy-like flowers with flat symmetrical petals, but poppies are close enough in design to make the same magic. Along the streets of Varna you’d had a hard time missing the dandelions, so it was easy to pick up a seed head and bring it back to our apartment to set up the shot.
Aside: for those of you that don’t know, my wife is originally from Bulgaria and we visit every year or two. It’s an incredibly beautiful country with multiple mountain ranges and a coastline, located in Eastern Europe north of Greece and Turkey. If you’re looking for an interesting travel destination, this is it!
The staging of the shot is fairly simple, but all of the puzzle pieces need to fall in just the right place. I used my Canon MR-14EX II ringlite in manual mode attached to a Panasonic GH5, though the ring was not fixed to the lens. The only way you can successfully use a ring flash for droplet refractions is to push the ring forward enough that it doesn’t cast any light on the droplets – effectively, the seeds are placed inside the center of the ring. If the flash was properly mounted to the lens, the light from the flash would hit the droplets first and flower second, resulting in nasty catch-lights in the droplets and an underwhelming refraction effect.
I’m loving the GH5 and the whole “premium micro four thirds” camera idea. In the case of macro photography, the 2X crop factor really works to your benefit to increase the magnification you’re able to achieve without any extras. No extension tubes required, just a macro lens to get this close – and I could have gotten closer! The Leica 45mm Macro from Panasonic is a gem… I’m going to be sad to give this back at the end of the month. Rapid-fire shooting is essential to get focus through the proper “slice” of the subject, as I physically move the camera forward and back to shift focus on this scale. The resulting images could have easily been focus stacked, but I felt that a single frame captured enough of the magic.
Shooting at F/8 gave me enough foreground focus to work with, while still presenting the background (the center of the poppy) out of focus. The balance here is always a bit tricky to establish, as the size of the flower (and inherently how far away from the focal plane it is) changes every time. There was about 10 minutes of tinkering in total done with camera settings, subject and light placement, and subject positioning.
The hardest part about this image was getting one dandelion seed to stay intertwined with the other. It’s easy when they’re dry, but as the droplets accumulate the seed gets heavier and falls off. Only one of the seeds is clamped in place! The setup needed to be re-staged four times before a supportive entanglement was found.
If you’d like to try and make an image like this, I teach photography workshops on exactly this subject here in my studio! The next workshop date is June 10th: www.donkom.ca/product/macro-photography-workshops/

ATI Cosmonaut Mark V ‘HERA’ (High Energy Rail Accelerator)
The HERA is a compact high-grade energy weapon designed by Agroprom Technology Institute (ATI).
The first concepts for the weapon were fashioned in the late 2020s, for use by special insertion squads during the rise of energy weaponry. However, the concepts did not pass prototype stage after numerous cases of weapons melting or burning during use, and were soon buried. The prototypes and concepts were uncovered in the late 2050s as soon as demands for a space-based weapon rose, and the materials required for withstanding such high levels of heat became available for mass production. A new prototype was fashioned using the same initial designs, while adding design changes allowing for use by a human in a spacesuit. The internals were also modified to incorporate advances in material technologies. The weapon is manufactured and sold in small quantities due to its limited use in exoatmospheric conditions and high relative cost of the materials and techniques used in its manufacture.
The HERA platform is a linear accelerator which utilizes two electromagnetically charged rails (silver-lined molybdenum-steel alloy) to propel a ‘pulse’ of superheated ionized plasma towards the target by forming a powerful magnetic field along the length of the weapon’s acceleration chamber, expelling the projectile at high velocity. The design produces high velocity coherent projectiles capable of burning through spacesuits and disintegrating soft targets such as human flesh, while dissipating upon contact with solid assets such as spacecraft hulls, leaving them largely undamaged. The system has been noted to pose a slight risk of fire when used around ships with a high-oxygen internal environment.
The weapon is constructed of a lightweight heat-dissipating titanium alloy frame combined with a carbon-fiber reinforced thermoplastic shell. The frame is designed to effectively disperse the large amount of waste heat generated with each discharge. This passive design aspect is augmented by a liquid nitrogen based coolant system which runs parallel to the surface of the propulsion rails and laser-drive chamber, preventing overheating during sustained fire. Even with these design features, the weapon is still prone to overheating (automatically shutting down the weapon for five seconds, after approximately 30 discharge cycles at 900 RPM) through prolonged firing.
While there is very little recoil from the accelerator compared to contemporary solid projectile platforms there remains a low level of effective recoil force produced, which can cause an operator to lose control of their rotational velocity while firing the weapon. A series of synthetic viscoelastic urethane polymer shock dampening buffers are placed within the internal skeleton of the stock portion, used to absorb the remaining recoil impulse. Operators using the weapon are often required to rely entirely on visual feedback to know that their weapon has fired due to the near-complete dissipation of recoil energy. Some users note minor heat buildup in the weapon’s grip during extended operation, however when operating the system from within a spacesuit there is no tangible discomfort.
As a plasma accelerator, the HERA platform is inherently suited for operation in a vacuum, but has also shown extensive capacity for atmospheric use, though the weapon’s effective range in atmospheric conditions is significantly reduced due to air resistance and other factors.
While there are many better alternatives for the weapon on ground, it has a number of advantages in space combat.
Unlike a traditional weapon, which requires heavy, high-volume ammunition, the HERA utilizes compact plasma canisters - as the ammunition is fluid, it does not waste any space and takes the shape of it’s container.
Secondly, the HERA can fire continuously at 900 RPM until the magazine is exhausted with only 5 second intervals every 30 rounds for cooling.
Third, and most importantly, the projectile is extraordinarily fast, clocking in at 5100 meters per second muzzle velocity - around 5 times faster than a traditional automatic rifle. This feature is useful in outer space due to the vaster distances without cover.
Fourth, it cannot puncture holes through thick material such as walls, but easily burns through suits or clothing, making it safe for use aboard a space station. The use of traditional projectile weapons aboard spacecraft is highly dangerous, as stray projectiles could cause severe damage or decompression by penetrating exterior hull sections, endangering all individuals present.
Components:
Bobson Synthetics Group DPF Capsule
The condensed ionized plasma fired by the weapon is stored in capsules mounted to the sides of the platform’s body, providing high storage capacity. Each DPF capsule is a dual-purpose binary magazine containing a plasma fluid matrix and a nitrogen cooling chamber. When reloading the weapon an operator can remove only those capsules which have been fully depleted, increasing adaptability in combat situations.
Polyrhythm Corporation Laser-Drive Chamber
Located beneath the primary firing chamber of the weapon, the Polyrhythm L-DC is a small, highly heat resistant chamber connected to the weapon’s plasma delivery conduit directly prior to the primary firing chamber. The L-DC uses a high-energy laser diode to heat the channeled plasmoid to an incredibly high temperature, expanding it and forcing it into the primary firing chamber, where the plasmoid is accelerated.
A Polyrhythm Arcjet was placed into the earlier models of the weapon, rather than a laser diode. These are much bulkier as they also carry a large canister of hydrazine, but are known for possessing a longer lifespan due to the sturdier construction of the chamber.
Steinbek Compulsator
The Steinbek ‘Compensated Pulsed Alternator’ is a small device used for storing power for use by the railgun. It is basically a series of flywheel devices sealed in a tube constructed of a shock absorbing carbon-steel composite. The flywheel devices consist of a carbon-fiber composite rotor surrounded by magnetic bearings and a counterweight stabilizer. The Compulsator is designed to fire it’s energy in pulses rather than steadily, perfect for an energy intensive device such as a railgun.
Unlike a battery, the Compulsator can last ages longer than a battery, operates with equal efficiency in any environment and temperature, and suffers no chemical failure. The device can be fully recharged within minutes.
The earliest models of the weapon utilized a Steinbek RTG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) in place of a compulsator. These models are much more dangerous as what they use are essentially atomic batteries, utilizing Plutonium-238 - while shielding requirements are low or nonexistent, the systems can be unpredictable with the massively fluctuating energy levels of a railgun. However, with sufficient protection, these weapons are much more reliable and can take much more of a beating - but be careful. When you see the blinking red light on your HUD, throw your gun as far away from you as you can and float for your life - an RTG doesn’t fail often, but when one does, it fails with a moderately sized explosion.
Sony HRA445B Lithium-Polymer Batteries
Two mass manufactured Sony Lithium-Polymer batteries located in the stock power passive electronic systems such as sights, HUD, stabilization computer and temperature regulation and detection computer. These are recharged within seconds of being plugged into a station, but cannot power the railgun.
The optic is a sturdy Agroprom camera-sight.

Wisps of fog can be seen over the railroad yard and harbor on the dreary afternoon of Thursday, May 26, 1988 as three TerraTransport NF210 narrow gauge diesel engines switch the yard at Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
The 936, 938, and 945's combined 3,600 horsepower jockey a combination of containers on flat cars and pulpwood cars on the railroad's three foot six inch (1,067 mm) gauge track.
The pulpwood cars are likely destined to the giant Bowater paper mill nearby in Corner Brook. Easily the town's biggest industry, the mill was undoubtedly also part of the reason this archaic railway lasted as long as it did.
Containerization on this island operation was seen as a way of eliminating some of the inefficiencies inherent to traffic traveling between Newfoundland and the mainland. Prior to the appearance of the containers, a railcar originating on the island would have its lading transferred from narrow gauge box cars onto the ferry at Port-aux-Basques; upon arrival on the mainland after the seven-hour passage across the Cabot Strait to North Sydney, the lading would again have to be transferred – this time onto a standard gauge boxcar – before it could continue by rail to its destination.
The containers eliminated much of this manpower-intensive and hence costly operation. Subsequently, at Port-aux-Basques, each container would be transferred in one operation from a narrow gauge flatcar onto a standard gauge flatcar, and then shoved onto the ferry (which had standard gauge rails) by a standard gauge locomotive at Port-aux-Basques.
The adoption of containers streamlined the movement of freight to and from the mainland. Though TerraTransport's move to containers reduced the cost of the operation, any rail operation on an island is inherently inefficient because any transfer, even a simplified one at port, is less efficient than a line haul from origin to destination. Furthermore, the inherent inefficiency of narrow gauge was evident to this observer: containers on the island were stacked one to a narrow gauge flatcar, while on the mainland the same containers would be packed two-high ("double stacked") on a standard gauge flatcar.
Once highways were improved and extended to all population centers on the island of Newfoundland, the rail operations had little advantage over road transport. Ultimately, time ran out for the railway on Newfoundland. The entire TerraTransport rail operation ended operation in fall 1988, only four months after these pictures were taken. In subsequent years, the rail was torn out. The three NF210 diesels in this picture were sold to a buyer in Chile.
