In addition, Eva-Lotta invited 10 of her favourite sketchnoters from all over the world to contribute to the book. They all sketched the same TED talk and created some stunning sketches that show off the wide variety of styles and different ways of summarising content.

The signage is split into two halves. On the left side of the panel shows where the train is at while the train is stopped (with a flashing bounding box), and when it's in motion, it displays the next stop. The name of the next 10 stops, in yellow, are displayed to the right of 'you are here sign post'. Each station name is accompanied with designation in green which shows the additional lines you can do an interchange. A red handicapped icon designate whether there it is a station equipped with accessibility access.

 

At the end of the right half of the panel shows the last stop of the train, and the LED displays loops through the rest of the stop in multiple of 10s, so you can get a glance of all the stops while keeping the display small enough so as not requiring an extra large panel for the longer lines.

Street Data intervention Vienna Open Design

Three things make these displays more than just a collection of elements. First, we have gone to some lengths to include, along with the samples themselves, interesting examples of each element's application in the world. If you click on any of the element cubes in the large photo-mosiac below, you can explore the range of exhibits we have included.

 

Secondly, we have designed the installation to be interactive with built-in touch sensors. Selecting any of the element symbols calls up detailed text and photographic information about the selected substance on a computer (an Apple iMac) built into the cabinet. In many cases this information includes video footage showing spectacular experiments and industrial uses of the element in question. We plan to make these video available here on this website in due course.

 

The third significant feature of these large displays is quite simply that they are beautiful objects in their own right. It has been a delight at DePauw to see how people are drawn in to the tableaux of the cubes, where the story of each element unfolds. The cabinet is crafted in beautiful cherry hardwood (other finishes are available) and the glowing noble gas symbols are a beacon that attract people from a distance.

Der Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauß (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM) liegt 28 Kilometer nordöstlich von München im Erdinger Moos in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zu Freising. Er wurde am 17. Mai 1992 in Betrieb genommen, nachdem der Flughafen München-Riem zu klein geworden war. Der Großflughafen dient heute als Drehkreuz der Lufthansa und damit der Star Alliance und hat internationale Bedeutung. Er bildet nach dem Flughafen Frankfurt am Main das zweitgrößte Luftfahrt-Drehkreuz Deutschlands.

This three-in-one timeline relates what has happened in the world, computer technology and internet along last 25 years and it was published to celebrate the Folha de S.Paulo tech section´s 25 years. It has received an award of excelence in the last SND edition (30th). I must say that Mario Kanno has definitely colaborated with valuable ideas about using type and color and took some time debating it with me along the process. Thanks Kanno. A few months ago we did a small project for ClimateCounts, an organization which tracks climate “performance” of a variety of well-known companies. Wood Turner, who directs ClimateCounts, gave us a lot of freedom to do a design which expresses some of the rich data they track.

 

The design, above, displays company size (by market capitalization) as relative “tread” size; that is, General Electric and Google are large companies. Color (green,yellow,red) corresponds to climate performance, as does the size of the typeface. Therefore Starbucks, which is a relatively small company, is shown in large text size and with a green colored tread. We did 2 shirts each in 2 color schemes.

 

The intention is not for users to derive hard numbers from this, but the meaning behind the shirt makes for a good talking point and is a quick way to look up climate performance without looking like a dense table of data. We also wanted to make a shirt which people would want to wear. We’re getting a pile of these on top of our fee so we can strut around wearing our own design.

For more than fifty years, computer programmers have been writing code. New technologies continue to emerge, develop, and mature at a rapid pace. Now there are more than 2,500 documented programming languages. O'Reilly has been providing developers with comprehensive, in-depth technical information and has kept pace with rapidly changing technologies as new languages have emerged, developed, and matured.

 

This timeline includes fifty of the more than 2500 documented programming languages. It is based on an original diagram created by Eric Levenez (www.levenez.com), augmented with suggestions from O'Reilly authors, friends, and conference attendees.

The authors conducted an exhaustive empirical study, with the aid of custom software, public search engines and powerful statistical techniques, in order to determine the relative popularity of every integer between 0 and one million. The resulting information exhibits an extraordinary variety of patterns which reflect and refract our culture, our minds, and our bodies.

 

For example, certain numbers, such as 212, 486, 911, 1040, 1492, 1776, 68040, or 90210, occur more frequently than their neighbors because they are used to denominate the phone numbers, tax forms, computer chips, famous dates, or television programs that figure prominently in our culture. Regular periodicities in the data, located at multiples and powers of ten, mirror our cognitive preference for round numbers in our biologically-driven base-10 numbering system. Certain numbers, such as 12345 or 8888, appear to be more popular simply because they are easier to remember.

 

Humanity’s fascination with numbers is ancient and complex. Our present relationship with numbers reveals both a highly developed tool and a highly developed user, working together to measure, create, and predict both ourselves and the world around us. But like every symbiotic couple, the tool we would like to believe is separate from us (and thus objective) is actually an intricate reflection of our thoughts, interests, and capabilities. One intriguing result of this symbiosis is that the numeric system we use to describe patterns, is actually used in a patterned fashion to describe.

 

We surmise that our dataset is a numeric snaphot of the collective consciousness. Herein we return our analyses to the public in the form of an interactive visualization, whose aim is to provoke awareness of one's own numeric manifestations.
