I see influencers as nothing more than grifters, manipulating people into buying things they do not need or selling them on ideas that are a lie. If you follow travel influencers, and visit the travel sites they suggest, ask for your money back if it doesn’t look like the images/video from their feed.

As long as we`re aware of it all and don`t forget there are things in this world that will make us sad, frustrated, touched, or angry... as well as there are things that will make us smile, laugh and see the beauty of life. Hopefully the brighter infuences can make us do something about life`s darker sides?

Before photography taught us to see things as they are, great landscape art was closely linked to mythological thinking. Artists did not have the materials to go out into the fields to paint scenes as they were, and with no camera to make a record, memory and imagination were central to painting in studio the kinds of landscapes that were made famous by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). With the invention of the paint tube in the early 19th century it became feasible to paint en plein air, and so followers of Lorrain, like John Glover began to do so.
By the time of Impressionism (from the late 1860s) photography had established itself as the "scientific" medium of record, but it struggled to be seen as having any relevance to fine art. But in many ways the rise of impressionistic painting was already an indication that the influence of photography was being felt. Why paint a realistic scene when the camera can render it as such? The Cubists made no bones about this fact, and it can be argued that abstract painting is derived from the influence of photography.
The first native-born Australian landscape artist was Tasmanian William Piguenit (1836-1914). Piguenit's day job was as a land surveyor, and he used a camera to record the landscape. He became the first artist in Australia to use the camera as the basis for constructing his imaginative landscapes.
These days it is possible to see the way photography has even influenced the compositions of contemporary landscape painting. These three selections I have shown are just some of the best examples. Now there are mitigating circumstances at play here, in that because of Covid travel restrictions artists had no choice but to rely on photographs as the basis for their work.
Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll agree that the People's Choice winner on the left has been strongly influenced by the way photographers seek to capture the light (there are shades of Bill Henson here). The painting of the forest tops in the middle could only be possible with the advent of drone photography, and the beautiful little Eastern Quoll on the right is set in a landscape that meets all the requirements for good landscape photography. No wonder, because this work began life as a photo.
