The Italian architect and engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was born in Venice. He started taking drawing lessons at an early age, and was primarily influenced by the work of architect Palladio. At the age of eighteen years old, he moved to Rome with an ardent desire to know the Eternal City and worked as draughtsman at the service of the Venetian embassy to the Vatican. In Rome, Piranesi studied engraving under Giuseppe Vasi, with whom he later clashed. An impulsive, ambitious and prolific artist, Piranesi worked in harmony with his time, as he was always drawn to and cultivated the dramatic, the inspired and the spectacular.
As with the work of French architect David Leroy (1724-1803), the technique and art of Piranesi's drawings aim to make an impact the viewer. A strong impression, which it is the artist's duty to convey, is deemed more important than precision in representation. Piranesi is among the most dynamic exponents of Neoclassicism; at the same time, he belongs to early Romanticism as well, as the remains of classical civilisations become the cause of poetic emotion.
Piranesi also visited Naples, where he depicted the local antiquities with passion and admiration, and created several copper moulds of his works. He returned to Venice in 1744, where he refined his engraving skills. It was there that he published his first major work “Carceri di invenzione” (“Fictitious prisons”, 1750, 1761 and 1780). The uncanny as well as evocative spaces of the prisons invented by Piranesi disturb the viewer and constitute a lasting influence on visual artists, writers and architects from his time to the present.
Later in his life, Piranesi returned to Rome, where he worked mainly as an engraver and painter and less as an architect. His “Monuments of Rome”, made a great impact on his contemporaries. In contrast to the contemporary intellectual atmosphere, and while scholars (such as Winkelmann, Ramsey, Stuart, Revett) direct their attention to Greece, which they see as the primary inspiration of Roman architecture, Piranesi sustained that the Etruscans, a people older than the Greeks, were the first to achieve aesthetic perfection. His ideas provoked a debate among European scholars, and opened new pathways to the study of ancient legacy.
The two thousand copper engravings drawn and etched by Piranesi in his lifetime were published posthumously in Paris by his sons, in a monumental edition (1835-1837).

İtalyan asıllı mimar ve gravürcü Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) Venedik yakınlarında doğar. İlk çizim derslerini çok genç yaşta alan Piranesi (okunuş: Piranezi) ünlü mimar Palladio'nun eserlerinden etkilenir. On sekiz yaşındayken Roma'yı tanımak arzusundan hareket ederek buradaki Venedik elçiliğinde çizer olarak iş bulur.

I'm loving this card. I made this for the Ways to Use It Challenge #203, which was to use alcohol in some way. I reached for my Copic markers right away, and wanted to ink up this awesome stamp from Stamps Happen. I thought it might be fun to mix up some Valentine's cocktails, and so this is what I came up with....The sentiment, which is computer-generated, reads "under the influence"....and inside: "of your love."

The Plaza Monumental de Barcelona, often known simply as La Monumental was a bullring in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was the last bullfighting arena in commercial operation in Catalonia. It was inaugurated in 1914 under the name Plaza de El Sport and was immediately expanded and renamed in 1916 with its current name. It is situated at the confluence of the Gran Via and Carrer Marina (Marina Street) in the Eixample district. It had a capacity of 19,582 within 26 rows of lines, boxes, and bleachers on the first floor inside and a superior barrage surrounding the building.
It was the last place in Catalonia where bullfights were held, since the Parliament of Catalonia passed a law banning bullfighting events on 28 July 2010 that came into force in 2012. Balañá family property, which has transferred its operation to the House Matilla.
The building originally had a noucentista architectural style, the work of Manuel Joaquim Raspall i Mayol. The expansion work was done by Ignasi Mas i Morell and Domènec Sugrañes i Gras to give it its current facade, strongly influenced by Mudéjar and Byzantine architecture. It is one of the larger public arenas in Barcelona, with a capacity of 19,582 for bullfights or about 25,000 for events such as rock concerts (using part of the ring for spectators).

André Lhuillier, CSS PhD student. André’s talk entitled “Why Little Samson Didn’t Defeat The Hedgehog: A Story Of Social Influence And The Relevance Of Distribution For Successful Information Goods"
Abstract: In 1992 during one of the fiercest battles of the so called ‘console wars’, a modest game was released in the mist of the industry frenzy. Although ‘Little Samson’ is recognized by those who know it as a great game, it remains unknown for most of the consumers today. On the other side of the battlefield, Sega’s thriving Hedgehog was convincing everyone that they have seized their main competitor ‘Mario Kart’. Despite this momentary victory in consumer’s memory and affection, the real winner was not in the center of the industry’s attention. Having less media presence, the sequel of Super Mario Land for the Game Boy was the most purchased game with almost 200% units of what ‘Sonic 2’ sold. This kind of unpredictable and divergent behavior is a unique characteristic of information goods markets. In this presentation I survey the last 30 years of the video game sector and show its particular composition and evolution. Following De Vany’s approach to Hollywood movie industry I dwell into an analysis of this industry with special emphasis in consumer behavior. Re-visiting De Vany’s proposal I make a simple ABM approach to model and show how placement or distribution properties may induce long tail distributions. Following the relevance of information diffusion and the development of hype in this industry another model is presented. In this case the relevance of a consumer social system and its dynamics. After an analysis of the industry history, consumer’s social influence, sales and distribution/access is reviewed; I present several findings and propose a model to understand them. A final discussion will be opened with the presentation of data on Valve Company digital platform Steam.
