Amsterdam Light Festival
Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter. The artworks are placed alongside two routes. Each route has their own theme, set of artworks and visitor experience. Water Colors, the boat rout, displays big monumental objects and offers visitors the chance to experience the art from a water perspective. Illuminade, the walking route, shows interactive and innovative installations from upcoming designers in the Plantage neighborhood.

The life of a slime mold

Nicole Banowetz’s inflatable sculpture The Life of a Slime Mold is an enlargement of a small but fascinating organism: the slime mold. The single-celled organisms can move with small 'feet'. In principle, they live alone (on soil, grass or tree trunks) until food becomes scarce and their individual survival is threatened. They then merge into one large, moving colony. Surprisingly, the mould can take a coordinated action to save their lives while they do not actually have a brain. They can detect food sources and map out an efficient route to them. The mould then plants through traces, after which a new life cycle can begin.
This tireless energy, which prompts the colony to find a way through the branches of the tree, radiates in the enormous mould with pulsating coloured light.
Surprisingly, the slime mould can take joint, coordinated actions at a critical time to save their lives - and to reproduce - while they don’t have an actual brain. As human beings, we consider ourselves to be extraordinarily developed creatures, but Banowetz lets you wonder: what actually does define intelligence? And is it intelligence that gives meaning to existence?
Nicole Banowetz is a sculptor from Denver who is specialized in sculptures, design, installations and education. Banowetz lived and worked all over the world. She exhibited work in India, Italy, Ireland, Russia, Germany, Poland and England.
Her work mainly consists of inflatable sewn sculptures with delicate assembled forms. Her work addresses venerability and struggle. Her objects exist out of layers that are protective and destructive for the work at the same time. Her forms move between growth and decay, and decoration and disease.
If I remember correctly, this was on Hayes Creek, getting ready to head down river after we had inflated and loaded the canoe. I grant that it was badly overloaded, but still, I never liked that canoe. It always wanted to spin and send me through the rapids backwards. Better than carrying all that gear though.
I remember these! My Mom had many of them. Gee, I wish I still had one. To me, this is Easter in the 1960s. vintage

I've been doing what I do as a job in various forms for my whole adult life, its a pretty boring role with a lot of responsibility in the IT sector, though I sometimes work on some cool shizzle. When i was younger it was my ambition to do something like this, however I'm now happily married live in Brighton and my ambition has changed. I've been sat working from home after also working in the office, this work day happens often and this little inflatable globe on my desk reminds me that Em and I intend to travel around the world next year. We aim to be driving coast to coast in the State's on our final leg, i write this whilst looking forward to that and listening to Crosby, Stills & Nash; and wondering why the names were in that order.
