Every summer a series of boat races are run in the St Clair River at Sarnia, Ontario. The river is the local boundary between Canada and the USA. Many classes of boats take part in the events, and the races between the two-man inflatables are fun to watch. They travel at high speeds and are very close together.

While it's pretty common to see people boating or kayaking or even paddle boarding along the Union Canal, this was a bit more unusual - I saw this couple blowing up an inflatable canoe, then getting into the water with it. Sadly they were heading away from where I was sitting nearby (enjoying some open air reading), so I only got them from the side and back.

Unlike many other early space station concepts, this design actually made it out of the concept phase and into production, though no models were ever flown. This particular station was 30-feet and expandable. It was designed to be taken to outer space in a small package and then inflate in orbit. The station could, in theory, have been big enough for 1 to 2 people to use for a long period of time. A similar 24 foot station was built by the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation for NASA test use. The concept of space inflatables was revived in the 1990s.

They were sitting in front of an inflatable slide at the university’s Frosh Week events in downtown Toronto. The jumpsuits covered in embroidered patches were the give-away that they were engineering students. I liked the crest made from a broom and the friendly smiles so I stopped to chat and ask for a photo. Meet Jacqueline and Maria who told me they probably weren’t at the best after being up night after night at Frosh parties. Could have fooled me.
Maria and Jacqueline told me they had been participating all week in the annual welcoming events for new students known as Frosh Week or Orientation week. These events take over the downtown campus and are student-led with the intention of helping new students get to know the campus and find out information that will help them find out about university life. They also provide a nice opportunity for incoming students to meet one another and form social connections within their chosen field of study. The inflatable slide had no customers yet as we chatted but later I saw that Maria and Jacqueline were busy talking to new students and overseeing the slide. Maria and Jacqueline’s friendship is a testament to the effectiveness of Frosh Week; they first met at Frosh Week when they first arrived at university and have been good friends ever since.
I commented that although there are more women going into the engineering field than in the past, they must still feel in the minority. Maria said this is very true for her since she is in computing and electrical engineering but that Jacqueline has the opposite experience in her biomedical engineering program which is mostly female.
I commented on the purple dye on their hands and they explained that they had participated in “purpling” earlier in the week. They went on to explain this engineering tradition in which prospective engineers dip themselves to varying degrees in a tub full of purple dye. The origins of this tradition, they explained, lie in the sinking of the Titanic and the story that the dedicated engineers below stayed at their posts, trying to save the ship. As a result, they became soaked in sweat and water and the dye of their uniforms stained their skin purple. This story is unverified but the color purple has come to symbolize dedication and is forever associated with the engineering profession.
When asked to share a message, Maria said “Don’t worry so much” and Jacqueline said “join more clubs to meet people.” They both agreed on the expression “Do or do not. There is no try.” I thought to take a photo of their purple hands and one from behind to show the slide they were overseeing.
We talked a bit about the “Don’t worry so much” comment and I said I had observed that many of the young adults I meet express differing versions of the same message. Since adolescents are in the process of “finding themselves” it seems only natural that this stage of life comes with lots of uncertainties and worries. As time passes, however, and people “settle into their skins,” they often wonder “why did I spend so much time worrying?” I guess worrying is part of the adolescent process.
It is delightful to meet the university students who are approaching the day and life with enthusiasm and friendliness. We parted company offering each other thanks and my wishing them success in their studies and a much-needed good night’s sleep tonight. I reflected on what a big adjustment university life is and how much easier it must be when you share the experience with a really nice new friend.

A giant inflatable Gold Cup seen tethered on Cleeve Common, which overlooks Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire. Cheltenham’s National Hunt Festival runs from 11th - 14th March with the Gold Cup race on the final day.
Surrealism in the form of an inflatable dough-nut. Ingenious how they invent ideas for ways to part the people from their money.
Evening on the beach at Mandvi was a right circus with camel rides, speed boat rides, para-gliding, horse and cart rides, food stalls and not forgetting - rides in the inflatable dough-nut. Local tourists were arriving by the coach load. The passengers had that bemused look that suggested they didn’t really know why they were there.
