At the very still headwaters of the Little Calumet River which meanders for about 25 miles towards Lake Michigan.
The yard is mowed but the house is a ruin. Found this while transferring images from Aperture to Photos.
In golden light at the end of a long spring day, a Conrail ELSF train heads into the setting sun at 7:33 p.m. on May 28, 1989, at Chesterton, Indiana. The westbound freight is powered by an all-Santa Fe run through locomotive consist, led by Kodachrome EMD F45 No. 5950, heading back to home rails on the Conrail main line.
Outside Madison, Indiana, I discovered a cloud factory. Must have been on reduced capacity that day. Still, it was putting out quality work.
Another Grand Trunk westbound in a holding pattern at Calumet Avenue. This was a common place for the Troy Dispatcher to hold trains before launching them into the Chicago Terminal mess. Since CN sold the line west of here, this doesn't happen often.
CSX train Q560 passes the B&O signals at MP 79 near Hayden, Indiana. This train is made up of at least three trains that will be broken up in Cincinnati before heading to Toledo's Stanley Yard.
Passing the old elevator, tower and in the background is the crossing with the Indiana and Ohio, former DT&I
The 1911-built Camden Grain Elevator sits dormant on a clear, cool night. The elevator was once served by the Vandalia, PRR, PC, then CR before shutting down sometime during the Conrail days. One who looks up at its broken, busted windows may find a Turkey Vulture posted on a window sill, searching for its next meal.
Today's CERA, operated by the TP&W, shakes the derelict elevator about once a week, operating short freights down to Bringhurst to serve agriculture-related customers.
South Shore Line train 503 rolls across the frozen tundra at Lalumiere, Indiana. Hudson Lake will be the next possible stop, followed by Petticoat Junction. Final terminal will be South Bend.

A former Indiana Railroad unit now owned by NS (and the only one operational at the moment) is leading a Detroit Edison bound coal train west through Vickers (CP 285) in Northwood, OH on a warm, muggy summer evening. 7/18/17
J780 works a sweeping curve about four miles west of Seymour on the seldom used segment of the former B&O to Washington, Indiana.
On a disgustingly humid Sunday, the sun breaks away from the clouds just in time to shine on two South Shore Freights meeting on the west end of their Bailly Yard in Burns Harbor, Indiana.
On the left, a “Nice Guy” in the seat pauses for a couple frames before shoving into Bailly for the rest of their train for a total of 35 cars with CSS 2002 (GP38-2) and FURX 4226 (GP40-2). The job is AF12, the recently reinstated transfer to CSX East Chicago Pegasus Yard, at the time of the photo, the job has been online for a full week for the first time since 2017.
On the right, a trio of traction orange GP38-2s (2009/2007/2001) on train PF10 pull up to the signal on Main 2 at the west end of Bailly after completing their customer work on the east side of Michigan City, now waiting for AF12 to take off west so they can shove into Bailly.
This was my first time out towards the east end of the railroad since the NICTD Double Track Project has been completed and it was great to be back in action chasing friends on the CSS again. So much has been and will be changed in the past two years, granted it was a Sunday, holding freights on the main for long periods of time wasn’t nearly as possible or easy before due to the “silver sausage” commuter traffic. NICTD Dispatchers are still learning how to route trains around on the double track but it’s nice having everything completed, as well as daylight freights, now just added anxiety with track speed being 40MPH from Michigan City to Chicago and trying chase in the concrete jungle that NWI is turning into!

CSS GP38-2's 2005, 1001, and 2007 lead the way of train AF-11 as it departs Kirk Yard onto the city track at Pine Junction located in Gary, IN.
About a month ago a few friends and I went to get some startrails of this Diner in mid Indiana. Little bummed I didn't get Polaris in the shot, but I still really like the photo.
